Is Season the same as Season of Discovery?

Sorry but I have not played for a long time and wanted to come back to Classic.
Now I see Classic Era, Seasonal and Anniversary.
I have no clue what the differences are. What flavor is on Seasonal or what is different there compared to Classic and what is on the Anniversary!?

  • Classic era is the version before TBC and will remain eternally Vanillalike.
  • Seasonal is indeed Season of Discovery, it is an experimental feature of whackiness in Classic setting. Try it out if you want!
  • Anniversary is the current Classic that progresses within a year to The Burning Crusade, reliving the glorious moments once more again.

So TBC and WotLK servers are gone now and morphed to Cataclysm?
Season of Discovery is where u have 10 man raids or? And is the loot drop or something else different too or not?
Like any stat changes or serverwide buffs!?
ok anniversary sounds interesting too.

Anniversary realms have no special items or spells, and is in general close to the Vanilla realms. The differences are QoL features such as Dual spec, a Looking-for-Group dialog and removal of buff/debuff limits.

Season of Discovery / SOD is however a changed game: new/updated spells and items and new raid instances such as Black Fathom Deeps and Sunken Temple.

And you are correct in TBC and WotLK progressed to Cataclysm. They will most likely continue into Mist of Pandaria after Cataclysm.

Blizzard has confirmed that TBC will re-appear when the Anniversary realms progress into TBC in beginning of 2026.

Yes.

Many changes, a lot of new spells (runes), that completely change your gameplay (mostly there are spells from next expancions such as TBC or WOTLK, but also some completely new spells and specs, such as mage healer or shaman tank), a lot of QoL changes, items and raid fights are also completely reworked, worldbuffs reworked too, you can now buy an item that can apply this world buff in raids (those items are pretty expencive but works for the whole raid so only 1 member in raid can use it and everyone get buff). SoD is completely other gameplay and meta then classic

“anniversary” realms are just new fresh classic (that will in future progress to TBC, and maybe WOTLK), without major changes, only changes are QoL such as insta mail. dual spec, LFG tool (manual - without auto tp inside the dungeon). remove debuff limit.

Cool. Thanks for that good reply! Also thanks to the other posters.

Sorry for that stupid follow up questions, but if you start over with a fresh char and you have no real preferences. Which one would you recommend? Like it sounds to me Anniversiry is the way to go atm!? Highest population I am assuming!?

Thats the type of quotes I want to see from Saneko. Preach man!
