Is the northrend heroic upgrade worth it?

Seen as the boost has gone on sale now, I’m trying to weigh up if its worth it or not for me.

I first started playing wow back at the very end of wotlk and I loved it. Unfortunately by the time I got my first character to level 80 cataclysm had released which I pretty much hated and I soon quit.

Safe to say i’ve been looking forward to wrath classic as I don’t really enjoy the modern renditions of wow. This is my main character on wotlk classic, i’ve been levelling up bit by bit and tbh, i’ve been enjoying it. I don’t have ridiculous amounts of time to put into the game and I hear it takes on average around 150 hours played to hit max level. That’s a long time!

Contrary to (seemingly) popular opinion on these forums, I’ve actually really enjoyed not having dungeon finder in the game. I’ve been able to find a group for just about every dungeon up until this level without any real problems. And I prefer not being teleported to the dungeon, it makes the world feel much bigger and more meaningful, and back in the days of original wotlk I can’t tell you how many dungeons I did without ever knowing where on earth they were! Now i’m having to actually go to the dungeon in order to do it I’m finding out where they all are and to me it’s much more enjoyable that way.

So basically, i’m enjoying levelling but because it takes so long, and i’ve pretty much done it all before, it does start to become a bit of a drag. So i’m wondering if the boost is worth taking for someone like me who doesn’t have that much time to play. Obviously I wouldn’t use the boost on this character since I’ve already spent so much time to get here. I would boost a fresh character. But my main concerns are these:

  1. Is it really worth paying money to skip like half the game?
  2. Joyous journeys has arrived which has sped things up considerably anyway
  3. In the past, when a boost has been given for purchasing an expansion (i can’t remember which it was), and i’ve boosted a character, I always ended up hating that character and not wanting to play it because it felt cheap and un-earned to me. I’ve found it takes away the feeling of reward for hitting max level.

But the reasons in favour of boosting are:

  1. I don’t have much time to play so getting to the end game content to experience what I didn’t get to the first time round seems like it could be a good idea
  2. If I boost 1 character then presumably I can then make a dk, and level that from 55 even if i don’t end up liking the character I boost
  3. I’ll still get some feeling of achievement since I’ll still have to do the last 10 levels the normal way.

What do you guys think? Was boosting worth it to you? Do you think someone in my shoes should go for it? Or should I just carry on levelling the old fashioned way?

Let me know!

Why? You seem to have perfectly made up your mind after reading the forums and playing the game, and clearly stated what you liked and don’t like in almost essay like review.

I’m sure you can make your own decision.

You’ll see I listed 3 reasons for and 3 reasons against. So no, I haven’t made up my mind. I’m asking because there may be people out there in a similar position to me who boosted and later thought it wasn’t worth it, or, boosted and are glad they did it. So i want to hear other’s opinions.

Your 3 reasons not to are flawed.

  1. Yes, if you don’t want to do it.

  2. It ends next month.

  3. It still takes a while, will you be fully invested? No, can you speed up levelling by a huge amount on a class you want to play? Yes.

You want to do it really, you know you do.

Ah, yes, I just saw they announced a new ‘sale’ and they’re pushing boosts again. I was wondering where this came from, it was so weird ;p

It’s clear you’re going for it, it’s just some self justification it seems.

What u gonna do on ur boosted toon? Raid log? Sit around in Dala on ur mount?

I would say spend quite some time levelling it to 80 to start with.

I would say it’s not worth it.
I bought the Dark Portal Pass for TBC days before pre-patch because it was 50% discounted. I bought it mainly because of the mount and the Dark Portal Hearthstone.
When I realized I am a very slow leveler, I used the included boost on a character but ended not playing it. The character didn’t have proper gear and I didn’t feel attached to the character because I wasn’t involved in the journey to level 58. And I wanted to play on the fresh server.
At the end I didn’t like the mount so I didn’t use it. The only thing I enjoy is the Dark Portal Hearthstone, it’s super cool.
So in conclusion the boost is not worth it, with Joyous Jurneys leveling is really fast and you don’t need a boost. When the Epic Upgrade is discounted at least 50% off I might buy it because of the pet, otherwise I’ll avoid it.

I’d say no. Unless you’ve done it a million times before and are only interested in raids, quickly need an alt set up or just not enjoying the leveling, there’s absolutely no reason to pay to skip a game you pay a sub for.
If you don’t have the time to level it won’t get any better at end game.
I’d say take your time, enjoy or re-enjoy the journey and you’ll eventually get there, at this point LK still has around 10 months to go, end game is not going anywhere.

Wise words from Alissia and Mortales.

In addition, boosters tend to suffer from body odour [1]. You many not realise it, given the fact that they’re not physically present, and you see only their avatars - but it’s a medically-proven fact [1].

You and cabbagestew get commission on sales or what? (to clarify, im joking).

I don’tthink the boost is worth it. I used mine just to get a druid to 70 for easy northrend gathering when the price of herbs and ores was stupidly high. If not for that, I wouldn’t have used it at all.

The gear you get from boosting is absolute garbage too. You’d be better off just making use of the joyous journey’s buff and levelling the old fashion way.

Thank you for the replies guys. This is exactly how I felt the first time round when i boosted a character. Never ended up playing it again which is why i’ve been hesitant to do so this time round.

@Lorraen I call B.S on your reference source lmao

Unlike Retail, the leveling experience in Classic and in Wotlk still, is quite a journey. If you don’t have time to play as you wrote, then ofcourse this boost has a tremendous value for you.

Buy it, experience the end game content. Thats it.
If you wanna experience the leveing from 1, make an alt later. Thats it.

I literally just found out that you can make a DK without having a level 55 already. Kind of wish I knew that 45 levels ago, I could have been near max level by now no boost needed! Ah well.

The boost is worth every euro
Count the time you would spend leveling and then multiply it by your wage’s hour rate and compare it to the boost’s price

Kek, It WAS weird to me, I didn’t see they announced a new sale.

Like I’m reading a whole essay in which you clearly state you want a to buy a boost and why it’s a good thing, but then you ask if you should buy it?

I was wondering if you we’re influencer or something trying to make a blog-post, it was so out of place with normal behavior. But then I saw the sale, and it made sense, there are always a few people who need that last push to justify expenses to themselves by ‘feedback’ from others.

Is this the ‘Wrath of the Lich King Classic Upgrade’ ?

I would like to know how much would you get as ‘starting gold.’

If for 37.50 I get a Northrend character with enough gold that I don’t have to farm artisan by the time I cap, I would be very much inclined to throw that in the shopping basket along with 6 months worth of gameplay, and spare some time grinding boars/spiders/skelletons.

What if I actually like levelling and would therefore be paying to skip something that I enjoy?

How much gold was given to the character ?

I wouldn’t care much about gear though, as I only start paying attention by the time I get to cap level and want to do heroic dungeons - before that, anything that is at least green will do just fine
