Naming in Forums not allowed, but those thinking Male/Female was not to stay.
“They’ve removed the word Male” (and Female too )
I repeat: if they had removed them fine, stupid still, but OK.
But they did not remove them. They replaced the words Male and Female with Body type 1 and Body type 2.
Male / Female implies duality, the genders we’re born with. Body type 1 and Body type 2 implies more body types to come. They could have replaced them with XX an XY for genotypes - or some other dual expressions.
This could - just like all the small changes Vanilla => Classic - make way for more, bigger, more disruptive changes, just like the in-game changes did, because we did not complain loudly enough.
“Can you explain a single way in which this materially impacts your WoW experience?” Materially? whaddayou mean with this one, mind if I ansver this instead:
“Can you explain a single way in which this impacts your WoW experience?”
Every time I roll a new character - and mind you as I play IronMan / hc / Death=delete this happens quite often, sometimes several times a day - I am reminded that I have to mind my words, that I have to crouch along that politically correct tightrope*) even when playing an escapist game.
*) citing from my flagged post (which I composed in Word, as I do with almost all long posts of mine).
I better get to swallow down that Murti-Bing pill (read Zniewolony umysł (The Captive Mind) by Czesław Miłosz) so that I can be happily crouching along the tightrope where the leftist on one side, the new right on the other the SJW below and the snowflakes above define what and how I think and say.
EDIT:
Just for your information: “The hill I choose to die on” is called #NoChanges.
I am really struggle a lot to understand how/why people think this is an issue… no I am not a gay, but seriously, whats the problem? As long as the in-game doesnt change I care less of “words”… we still have male and female characters… let them call them as they want, they are female and male in the looks…
Read through this thread to find out. They went out of their way to change it, so why change it, it’s not inclusive or whatever they’re trying to say. It’s not a change that was in the game at the time. No change like this was made in Vanilla Classic, or TBC Classic (ignoring the painting but that was fairly minor). It sets a poor precedent for what they will do next when these changes are not in the spirit of what Classic was created for.
You’re thinking with “Why not though?” which unsurprisingly not everyone supports, the same thinking could have them change the entire look and feel of certain things the game, because “Why not?”.
I don’t see anyone crying out about it, and I didn’t see anyone doing so beforehand - it seems like you’re picking a fight with people who don’t exist.
It just says Body Type. There are still “dual expressions” with a traditionally masculine option and a traditionally feminine option.
This has nothing to do with the change. Nothing about the change makes it more or less necessary to mind your words than previously. If you’re playing the game, you’ve already agreed to the ToS, EULA and the Social Contract that was added back in June, and you’re already required to mind your words. If that’s not acceptable to you, you could have hit the Exit Game button instead of the Accept button on the Social Contract.
Blizzard announced back in June that they’re officially dropping #NoChanges and moving to #SomeChanges for WotLK. If that’s not acceptable to you, WotLK might not be the expansion for you. Classic Era still exists.
So you make a whole bunch of angry posts objecting to something, then when asked why you object, refuse to answer? That’s kinda weird. If you want to convince someone of something, it’s normally a good idea to present a reason they should agree with you.
so your current complain is more about “possible” future changes? Which I doubt there will come and if it happens will be 100% optional, like new warlock Succubus. Just play the game with your female or male character which is exactly the same as it always was.
Yeah, I’m making a good faith effort but it’s difficult to get into the mindset of the people complaining here. There seem to be two strands of complaint:
“If they change this, they might change anything!” which… I mean yeah, obviously. They’ve changed stuff already and they’ve told us they’re going to change more stuff in the future. If change itself is the problem, then people with this particular complaint just don’t and won’t like the game.
“I don’t like to be reminded that I have to mind my words” which, in a WoW context, specifically means no hate speech/harassment/threats/abusive language/spamming/advertising - so only an issue for anyone who wants to do those kinds of things, so not a complaint I’m hugely sympathetic towards.
1, 2, you can continue 3, 4, 5, 6, …
Male, Female, ? nope no more.
The social Contract added nothing new, it was just a summing up of a few things.
Being civil to other people is a natural thing to me. I do not like to be insulted, I do not like to insult either. But none of the things I have signed so far require me to speak of people as having body types. It requires me to try not to insult, not that hard… if you look at intentions that is; if you look at it from the receiving end even “Good morning” can be an insult. And now, with body type, “Hey! I’m looking for this here man, have you seen him?” can be understood as an insult to body type 1 persons.
Listen to a true story … The police had found a stray child, now they tried finding the parents: They sent out a text going something like this “Missing parents of a boy, 2-3 years, dark skinned, black hair, not English speaking, dressed in sandals and a blue onesie” And they were chided for giving gender and skin colour! That’s what I foresee in WoW’s future.
They’re not numbered in the game. You’re complaining about something that’s in your imagination, not something that’s in the game. Besides which, it was always just as possible as it is now for Blizzard to add additional gender options to the character creation screen.
Exactly my point. The rules about what is and isn’t acceptable conduct in WoW are well-established and they haven’t been altered as part of this change.
No, not really. Again, you’re complaining about something in your head, not something in the game. If Blizzard had announced that they were going to start banning people for using the word “man” you might have a point. But they haven’t done that. You seem to be just constructing absurd hypotheticals in an effort to have something to be upset about.
Ok, guess that’s what you think about it. I said to others as to why they’re here, you’re clearly looking for an argument when all I did - and doing - is post feedback on something I dislike that Blizzard are doing.
A lot of people complain and post feedback here I don’t agree with. I don’t try to belittle it though, I just don’t post, but I don’t understand why you and some others are here, at all. Apparently defending something you think is trivial or minor or unimportant. I clearly put across that I disagree with that through this thread. I’m not bothered if you disagree or think it’s not serious. If you want a pointless back and forth debate/argument you won’t get it from me, go to twitter or wherever you’d go for that type of thing.
Because when you cannot say Male / Man or Female / Woman or dark or fair or … zillions of other descriptive words someone may take offence at, it leads to things like the story I told about (PS the parents were found shortly after- happy ending).
PS. Just re-found the story - skin colour was not described as dark, but as yellow. Still it’s a true story. If you read Danish, as I do, you can google it.
But you can say those things, and nothing about World of Warcraft adding “Body Type” to the character creation screen means you can’t, so - again - this just makes no sense as a complaint.
Yeah, describing someone as yellow is generally considered to be racist. People objecting to that seems reasonable.
It is a complaint. This time around I want to complain! Early, much and loudly so that when the next steps are taken someone can’t come and say … but you did not complain when Body type 1 and 2 came around, now it’s too late, like with all the other changes. Same as they did with all those other changes.
My point was actually more that not a few meant that describing the child as a boy was equally bad
