You do the same, so you’re not better than him.
If anything one of the biggest issue in BFA is how the outdoor content is more relevant than ever.
You could completely leave the world behind in previous expansions past the leveling experience, while we’ve repeatedly been forced to play there in BFA
So how exactly was the open world more relevant before than it currently is ?
you do know games like Diablo 3, path of exile, wolcen, diablo 1 and 2, and even torchligt games, are rpg games also, they are hack and slash rpg games.
where games like world of warcraft, final fantasy 14 are multiplayer online rpgs again.
then we have single player games like the final fantasy series, breath of fire, darksouls series and many more who also are rpg games.
the word rpg varies a lot in how it is used though, but pretty much any game where you develope your char, and there is a story is an rpg, how the gameplay works has nothing to do whit it, heck even destiny and cough Anthem are rpg games but they are first person shooter rpg games.
but tot the core they all have rpg elements and are that for considered rpg games.
No it’s not an rpg, and you could argue that it has never been.
ROLE playing games are where you play a role/character with a chosen personality, background, ambitions etc. Then you act out that character in a world which changes based on your actions.
You have 0 impact on WoWs world. The only place where wow is somewhat an RPG is in RP servers.
At some point RPG suddenly meant a game that includes stats, gear, skill picking.
Nowadays “RPG” almost means nothing at all.
Yes, im getting irrationally annoyed when words lose their meaning.
Many words lost meaning in wow tbh. Let’s take some examples
*Dungeon - specific type of "jail "
Is FREEhold or halls of valor a jail ? don’t think so .
*Raid - swift sudden attack
Most people referring to raid as a place and not as a action which it is .
This isn’t part of the RPG game definition, that’s just your own opinion.
Diablo is undeniably an RPG and yet the world do not change once you clear a zone. You can just go back and reclear again and again as if nothing happened
Divinity Original Sin 2 is probably the closest game to a table top RPG i ever played and yet the world do not fundamentally change based on your actions. Worst thing you can do is to kill/let important npcs die but that’s about it.
Yes, unsurprisingly devs couldn’t implement the degree of freedom of DnD nor find a decent way to implement RP dialogues into RPG games. There’s interesting work done with IA on story/dialogues generation but that’s far too incoherent to be properly implemented in a real game
I believe that OP tried to say that wow lost immersion ,which is true . All those stupid popups like DING mission complete etc. Also good chunk of zones are instances and not part of a world . Let’s take Mechagon as example ,Glazgow discovered it fine, but why is not part of the world ? why i don’t have ability to travel there as low lvl ?
As soon it has been added it should be part of the world .
Imagine in order to travel from Brokenshore to Teldrasill you have to do some stupid scenario to unlock it lol.
Maybe it’s not part of a definition.
I would say DOS2 is an RPG, you can choose a personality for your character and your surroundings will change depending on how you act it out. This is not the case for WoW and Diablo.
I’m interested, what makes Diablo a role playing game?
It still has RPG elements in it, just about enough to qualify it as an RPG.
Unfortunately the game has slowly been infested with a group of players that have no interest in the RPG part of the game and have then taken to the forums to whine and moan about just about anything (even a 100% xp present is being moaned about).
These players are generally an over entitled bunch that think that they somehow deserve to get to end game and be kitted out in top level gear for either very little or no effort at all. Just take a look at the other threads her.
“Levelling is too slow”
“Dungeons are too hard”
“Why can’t I get the gear I want all the time”
And so on.
There is something to be said for different types and scales of RPGs here - as any traditional pen&paper dungeonmaster will probably be happy to confirm the complexity of adapting the world to the players choices rises exponentially with the amount of players making said choices.
In an MMORPG there are a great lot of people involved, so for structural reasons the game world cannot revolve around the decisions of one particular individual else it’d eventually become impossible to reconcile the different potential outcomes/worldstates into one narrative that all players can share. This is of course very different from singleplayer-RPGs where the entire gameworld indeed only exists as a stage for the protagonist to act on, but that doesn’t mean it is less of a RPG as a result - just a different kind.
is WoW a rocket propelled grenade? - No
is WoW a role-playing game? - Yes
Is the fact that it pretty much defined the ARPG genre enough ?
While you can’t control the RP you still control a character which interacts with the NPCs and play its role in the story.
You have pretty much all the features of a table top RPG and few games made back when diablo 1 and 2 had more immersive features.
Which part of the diablo franchise would contradict its status as a RPG ?
The personality and customisation are seemingly not required for a RPG, as seen in the Witcher 3
Are the dialogues required for a RPG ? Yet Skyrim do not really offer any real dialogue choices, they are mostly there to offer more informations rather than different options.
Are progression systems a non RPG element ? I’m fairly sure an item evolving with the wearer is a thing in many RPGs. Our sorcerer in my Pathfinder campaign found a living staff which will become more and more useful as we level up, while the explanation is different the end result is similar.
But if a game lacks basic RPG elements such as levels, gear and stats then it may not be considered as a RPG. The old assassin’s creed were titled as “action adventure games” rather than RPGs despite the open world and immersive story.
The definition of RPG is broad, partially because the technology wasn’t there to offer a more RP experience but also because the RP itself isn’t necessarily a compelling experience (imagine if you had to type every dialogue, it would certainly be more immersive but 1/ no chatbot is currently able to understand everything you tell him and there may be a lot of issues dealing with your replies and 2/ it would seriously slow you down)
There is a demand for that but i doubt everyone want to write a novel every time they play a game.
You can buy levels, so no its not a rpg
Having a level doesn’t define an RPG so your comment is wrong.
There are MMORPG’s that don’t have levels (EveOnline for example).
However having the option to buy a high level character doesn’t stop WoW from being a RPG, it’s just a fast track advancement, the levels are still there.
Well, you have not seen how far I can throw my WoW boxes. If i mount a propeller to the box, and use original discs as fans. It might as well be a rocket propelled grenade.
Only works if you attach a server blade to the wow box
This is where the boat is missed. Many might have missed it on your fluff language.
A world filled with players having to do things like feed their pets, or craft the best usable weapon, or make poisons for their weapons, creates RPG.
It’s not about one person making decisions that edit the narrative, that’s storytelling, it’s about masses of individuals doing things that all the others can relate to. It builds character, it isn’t about a character building a world.
You bring up Diablo, Skyrim and Witcher which are labeled as RPGs and let them define what RPGs are. My point in the first post was that i disagree with todays definition.
Yes you have character progression in those games, but so do you in Megaman for the NES and thats not an RPG.
The part that contradicts Diablos RPG status is that the player has no power over which role the character has in the world. It’s a very linear game with next to no choice except which helm you want to wear, or wich attack you want to learn.
I have not played Skyrim or Witcher so I don’t know if they have role playing capabilities enough for an RPG.
Today if a game has levels, stats and gear (and preferably is set in an LOTR inspired world) then they are considered an RPG. You think they are RPGs because they have that label. I think genres can be wrongly labeled.
And you do the same so you are not better than i.
I don’t enter every thread with salty attitude like you and then lecture others about culture.
