I saw no Northrend-wide announcement from Eldar Clearwater for the start, or end of the contest.
Did anyone else see it or was it just me who didn’t?

Yes it should, he is supposed to tell you when it starts and finishes. As unlike the Stranglethorn one you can fish anywhere in Northrend.
I did not see an announcement either.

Saw both the start and winner announcement just now, mind you I was in Dalaran for both so cant say whether its going serverwide.
This is part of my worry, but it seems some people are winning.
It not announcing someone has won to the rest of Northrend is stupid as once a winner has been declared the shark can no longer drop. So you end up just fishing for the full time without any chance of winning.
The Fishing Derby is live. The announcement for derby start and winner are not going out server-wide as I’ve just experienced on Nethergarde Keep EU. I did win the derby today but the Dread Pirate Ring is bugged and doesn’t provide secondary stats (hit rating, critical strike rating, +5% XP) according to the character panel. So it seems there’s several issues with the derby at this moment.
Edit: Tested the +5% XP from monsters and quests, doesn’t work either. The ring is useless until fixed.

All heirlooms are like this with their ratings, from what I have seen. Tested badge leather chest, wintergrasp leather shoulders

Great, so I’ll have to have a Guildie sit in Dalaran for the announcements so i dont waste too much time fishing after a winner was found :^)

I can confirm on Firemaw last two weeks no yells about the start or end of the event.
Feels kinda stupid that you don’t know where to stop fishing and have to have somebody in the city starting at the NPC…

I think shark can still drop, you will just got fishing bags if you are not first. Mine dropped after 4 hours lol.

Still no announcement… Nothing when it started and nothing about a winner. Went to the mob and it’s over already…

I believe this is caused by the server layering/sharding that is present in classic. Dalaran is just too far away from zones with fish to actually be loaded in while you fish. You can test this with mind vision or eagle eye
Say you are in stormwind and you try to mind vision someone in Redridge. You won’t be able to, they’re in a different “instance/layer/shard” because they are too far away. If you eagle eye to redridge from stormwind, it will be completely empty for you because it is in a different “instance/layer/shard”
You can also prove that zones are seperated by attacking monsters across zone borders. It doesn’t work properly, they chain reset, bug out. Two easy places to test this are at the guards at the gates of orgrimmar and at the entrance to gnomeregan.
You used to be able to train weapon skill on mobs at the entrance to gnomeregan by attacking the gnomes there while standing in Dun Morogh. They didn’t take damage or die or flee or anything. This got fixed at some point in TBC
Saw announcements on the latest Fishing Derby.
Just not in the Frozen Sea - any other zone worked for me.
However, another thing: We had two winners on our realm.
While on Discord with a guildie, he mentioned there was a winner. I hadn’t gotten an announcement so assumed it was bugged. Fished for like 2-3 more minutes, then hearthed. About a minute of being in Dalaran later: A winner has been found! Different person than the one my guildie saw on the announcement.
We were on different layers.
