Language in Public chats

So, I learned - 20 years ago - that English was the language for public chats, and it has been the common sense guideline as far as I know.

Today I was met with a terribly rude commentator when I said “Please use english in the public channel, otherwise majority of us can’t understand you.”
starting a huge rant about how English is not necessary.
This was in Newcomer chat.

I’m just asking for a clarification from blizzard themself by now, since the old guidelines are ignored by some and activly shot down.
(Anyone can use any language as long as its not offensive, however people will not understand you, and it is gibberish to most others who do not speak said language.)

So, Public channels (Such as Newcomer) as the norm and guided to language:
English or “Gibberish”/Whatever?

Also would like to fill in; Some people are not good at English (It’s not my native language either), and of course can ask a question or so in their own language in hope to have help - either directly, or with translating…
but having long conversations, or continously returning and speaking only in their own language; is it fine?

I stopped telling people to speak English on English servers. I just ignore then and I imagine they’ll get 10+ people reporting them to force a silence on their account.

I don’t believe it’s a rule in the terms of use for World of Warcraft, but as you said it was a common sense things, which normal people followed.

These days people are no longer normal, compared to what they were. So my best advice is ignore them and move on with your day.

Jag kan ju använda google translate för att förstå andra, men det är lite väl drygt som “norm”.

I can use google translate to understand others, but it’s a bit too much as a “norm”.

It’s just a shame to see people defend the language difference with such … hate, as I recieved today.
Purely for saying what I did, which imo is common sense.
When I pointed out it’s an old guideline, they kept harping “SOURCE FAM?!”… You know the attitude.

Also, for this Guideline-pointer being hated on by a Guide in the Newcomer channel.
Two guides, in fact.
(Im myself a guide, and tried to Guide the new player to use a language we can understand)… :dracthyr_uwahh_animated:

Dažreiz cilvēki vienkārši bez iemesla vēlas kaitināt citus un nevēlas neko pielikt :stuck_out_tongue:

But yeah, sometimes people do not like being told what to do, especially people who know what they’re doing is rude in part. Normally it’s a sign they were never taught basic manners by their parents.

For example if I play on a Spanish, French or German server, I wouldn’t just start typing in English and trying to have a conversation there. It would just be rude and impatient of me to do that. I’d at least try and speak that language if I wanted to ask a question for example.

But as most other languages do not have their own dedicated servers, I can sometime understand, but normally it should be started with “hey does anyone speak x language?” and then you take it to whispers, created a private chat channel to speak in and invite others etc.

Common sense, effort involved, so it’s never going to happen with individuals who do not care.

Seems to become horribly normal now…
I guess common sense is renamed uncommon / rare / ancient sense, cause I feel like I am just surrounded by the feeling of… dread - people behaving poorly in all sorts of manners, unable to talk with a respective tone to eachother etc…

Im tired. :frowning:

It’s because they’re hiding behind their computer screen.

But as mentioned it’s best to just ignore them, if you ask once and they get abusive. Normally when I see people being abusive, I just report them for their communication and I expect others may do the same.

But I won’t let it ruin my day, they mean nothing to me personally, so I don’t care what happens to them ingame or in real life.

Yeah that is the issue I have, I try ignore it – go somewhere else, do something else — but the problem seems to follow me.
People being just… ruining any online experience, nowadays.

Disrespectful, ignorant, selfish, rude, flat out abusive, disruptive; I just continously get the feeling of “maybe just don’t play” when it comes to online games, WoW being my primary one…
It just feels like hitting a wall of misery unless I only play with my friends etc; but they aren’t exactly awake in the night, and I have turned my day around cause my other half works night… :dracthyr_cry_animated:

Its just… a hard time to enjoy the game, for me.

For all you know they could be incredibly obscene and offensive, and you wouldn’t know because they’re speaking in a language you don’t know… reason why majority of English speaking forums don’t allow other languages for moderating sake unless it’s within their designated area…

Exactly. I’ve even tried to use google translate, and it only goes so far to “identify” it ?? – I’ve gotten some iranian and some indian languages, but it refuses to actually translate it to english for me, so I have NO idea what they have been saying — and as a guide; I am 100% unable to help them with whatever they are looking for in the Newcomer channel.

If the language of the realm is english, then english support is offered. It doesn’t say about what languages you can or are allowed to use in certain channels.

Specifically it says this with Blizz’s conduct:

Communication

When participating in communication of any kind (chat, voice communication, group finder), you are responsible for how you express yourself. You may not use language that could be offensive or vulgar to others.

Hate speech and discriminatory language is inappropriate, as is any obscene or disruptive language. Threatening or harassing another player is always unacceptable, regardless of language used. Violating any of these expectations will result in account restrictions. More serious and repeated violations will result in greater restrictions.

Yeah, but by gaming culture and the way things have been for years, it’s more of an unwritten rule so to speak.

It used to be a rule that you had to speak the Realm’s language, e.g English on English servers etc in public channels. But that’s a rule that dates all the way back to the launch of WOTLK, and got abolished at some point.

I honestly don’t care if someone speaks about language.
I speak 7 languages myself, so know when something is said that’s wrong.
And if I don’t understand it, it doesn’t concern me.

Not everyone is fluent in English, or even speaks English, so what are they supposed to do?
Never speak or play?

Only if you let it ruin your experience. If they don’t have a dedicated server for their language, don’t speak English well, and accept that using another language than English means they’ll get fewer replies, then what’s it to you? Just ignore their messages and go do your own thing.

It’s like when I’m in town and come across some tourists, expats or whatever, and they’re speaking their own language. As long as they don’t bother me it doesn’t bother me. Could they be saying something offensive about me? Sure. Do I care? No, it’s just words, those only hurt if you understand them.

No they just go to a server that they can speak teh realm language, cause that’s how certein regions work.

Just like in real life I don’t go to another country and get offended/expect everyone to understand when I speak english in india (random example). If you go into an enviroment that isn’t suited to you, don’t try and change it to your purposes, go to one that is, simple as that.

No because when someone is in a server that’s likely where they plan to stay, nobody visits a server for tourisms pruposes. So it’s more like people show up to your home town, where everyone has an established community with a established language, and go:“alright now everyone listen, I don’t know you language and I don’t care, even though I chose what server to be on I choose this one so you just have to accept that and move on, even if that makes it uncomfortable to you, and any attempt to suggest or even imply that I should change will henceforth be met with rudeness and insane assumptions towards you”.

Where’s the Dutch Server?
Or the Czech Server?

You can find what servers have you languages present by means of a simple google search, laziness is no excuse for rudeness.

Not to mention someone being unable to speak english is insanely rare in the current world, with almost every ccountry having some form of it in their school system, and even without that the gaming sphere is insanely heavy english, especially in europe because with so many different languages, having a common one makes communication with other much easier. For instance I play on ravencrest a very heavy scandinavian server, and even there we speak english because if we all refused to speak a common language we wouldn’t get anywhere and nobody would talk to each other in fear of offending the other person.

Which proves exactly the point you’re so happily skirting about with dumb answers.
There’s no English language enforcement, as all those servers are officially labeled as English and people labeled them as another.

There’s no rules that say you must speak English.
Anyone getting offended because they see someone speak a different language really need to evaluate their life-purposes.
