Language in Public chats

Weird how “respect and common decency” doesn’t extend to letting that person speak a language they are comfortable with.

Some people are so far up their own you know whats they can’t even see they are complete hypocrites.

And the two above replies summarises why common decency is just not a thing anymore.

I’m just showing why you are a hypocrite.

You can’t fault my logic so you resort to weak shots.

Why can’t you show the decency to let someone speak a language they are comfortable with? Who made you the arbiter of that?

Not at all, but I do not care much for having a common decency - even less so common sense - discussion with You.

When you join an ‘English’ server it only indicates the language the game is in, not the default language of the players.

Did you just use common sense on these forums?

Sorry, I’ll get my jacket.

Nope that does this only on a russian server. I could for example join with a german interface the spanish servers. Only the russians are forced to play in their native language on the server with their language because Kyrillic signs do not bode well with the latin unicode. If they decide to put their client in english they could choose any other server that is not RU.

If I see any non-english gibberish in any chat, I report.

It’s important to address the way you presented your point as it oversimplifies the situation. Your choice of words may come across as lacking social awareness or being quick to label others as selfish or racist for wanting something or someone to behave in a certain way. It’s crucial for you to be more considerate and thoughtful in the future.

Regional servers or data centres in online games aren’t just for grouping people based on their language or location for technical reasons. They serve a vital purpose of preventing cross-cultural mixing and minimizing culture shock that can result in serious issues. These servers segregate players based on their regional location, which helps avoid conflicts arising from cultural differences. In competitive games, you may come across the same players repeatedly, as they are essentially your neighbors. This system helps reduce the number of customer tickets arising from such conflicts. The Terms of Service for these games aren’t there just to protect the players but also to remove problematic players from the game. In most cases, companies will side with the aggrieved party, even if both parties were at fault for the argument.

A few years ago, when English literacy was far lower, limiting the number of factors possible for players to sling at one another by restricting them to regional servers was a fantastic way for smaller developers to reduce the amount of toxicity that happens in-game. There was also the case of the Japanese regional server. Countries like Japan, along with a lot of the Middle East and Asia, are very insular societies. Their regional servers have been their regional servers forever, and it’s only in recent years many games have allowed cross-play between servers based in different nations. These communities have developed their unique greetings, strategies, and loot rules, and while someone will be scared or angry that you are a foreigner, what causes the issues is when the foreign party ignores the established culture of that region because the native server population will start to treat all foreign people as a risk to play with because the trust is gone all thanks to a misunderstanding or a few bad apples. This does happen in FF14 now, and if you can read, write and speak Japanese, they are okay with you no matter where you are from. However, there are a lot of people who just use Google translate, and for context-based languages, it’s awful. It just lessens their experience, and so they will stop socializing with you, and the whole reason you come to the server is to socialize with them.

People are messy and complicated, and treating everyone equally doesn’t work. This approach might work in some Western servers depending on the player population, but it’s not a guarantee, and the people who want more from you aren’t evil or labeled as such for expecting more or wanting you to perform because you are a guest in their “community.”

It’s crucial to understand that the context changes when you’re in a friendship group compared to a public situation. Friendship groups have their own rules, and I have a lot of German and Finnish friends who speak their own languages constantly, and I’ve met their friends, and they speak German. But the rules for us are a lot more informal than what it would be in a public situation. Even though we are still playing a game, it is still a public situation. I wouldn’t expect a stranger from another country to conform to how I see the world or expect them to act like how people in my region act but at the same time they should try their best to conform to how the region has evolved over time without them.

It’s the whole reason the saying, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do” exists.

I have zero clue why you decided to log onto a different character to give me the same redundant lecture.

I reject your premise.

This is a simple statement: Despite the fact that the server support language is English, people are entitled - per the rules - to speak the language of their preference.

I don’t want a dissertation overcomplicating a simple matter, I’m not debating this, I’m stating a fact, as endorsed by Blizzard either explicitly or tacitly.

Why would it matter if I log onto a different character especially since this one is my main going forward?

You just envelop every point people make into this nihilistic black-and-white worldview and then reductively destroy it. You come across as a genuine bigot or an ignorant human.

No one cares if you follow the rules and speak another language. Everyone cares if you cause problems for everyone around you. You have such an entitled worldview that you think you aren’t beholden to others in a social game.

It takes two groups to play with one another and if you are new to a community and start acting like you own the place, they will reject you immediately.

Because its just a copy paste of the previous drivel. It’s like you forgot we had the interaction then logged on a different character to repeat it.

I’m not discussing a “world view”. This issue is black and white. You’re the one overcomplicating it pointlessly with your pontificating while trying to fit it into a jigsaw of wider society and 4000 years of evolution.

Question: Can a person type in another language in wow newcomer chat?
You: “If you look at the history of ancient Mesopotamia bla bla bla for 300 irrelevant paragraphs”
Normal answer: “Yes”.

Thats a completely dishonest take on what happened. Someone had the temerity to speak their preferred language in a newcomer channel. The horror. This isn’t FFIXV, the hordes aren’t trying to dejapanificate the server, its just a new fella trying to get an answer to a question in a game that they are new to.

In short, I don’t really care what you think. And clearly nor does Blizzard, and they are the authority on this particular matter.

Not quite a “Karen”, more so a “What are the rules here?”, a clarification.
Good meme tho, shame it doesn’t apply.

I’ve finally popped him on forever-ignore on this character as well, he is 100% acting as a - genuine - bigot and ignorance is flowing haywire wherever he goes.
I’ve given up on him ever being a decent person by now since he is popped on block.
Report / Block is the only option, he spams the same attitude everywhere and always have…

It baffles me that people don’t grasp that it is showing respect to eachother to - try - speak a language people around you speak.
Feels like I fell into a hole and out on a side where people just were raised VERY differently than I was used to.
Sure, people have always been crap — but it just feels like this issue has grown larger over the past… 10 years, ish, the problem of being selfish and ignorant, I mean.

I made an effort to reach out to you politely and convey my point in a well-written post. However, it seems like my message will never get through to you. You are being tone deaf and it’s becoming increasingly frustrating to communicate with you. I keep all my Alts in the same guild, which is why they have the same guild sign, and it’s not illegal for me to change my character. Stop projecting your own insecurities onto others and try to understand where I’m coming from. But you are a genuinely ugly person.

It’s impressive how you’re trying to bring up a completely unrelated conversation someone showed in an attempt to catch me off guard. However, the attempt failed miserably since there was a clear lack context about a post that was made months ago.

It is unacceptable to disregard the historical context behind the categorization of servers and impose Western standards on players worldwide. It is disrespectful to call them names and treat them poorly simply because they don’t meet your moral standards. It is imperative to acknowledge and respect cultural differences in the gaming community.

It’s important to understand that the FF14 community isn’t attempting to exclude foreigners from their servers. Their goal is to ensure that everyone speaks the same language so that they can play together without any communication barriers. Similarly, if you’re joining a community, it’s crucial to speak the same language as others to avoid causing any problems. Without the ability to communicate effectively, it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to integrate yourself properly into the community.

We never see eye to eye and in my mind, you are a complete and utter racist. The conversation between the two of us will end here.

It appears that you had a wonderful upbringing, and were brought up in a courteous manner. It’s quite astonishing to come across individuals like this who display such horrible behaviour, and I have placed them on ignore as well.

(Finally changed my char from Akyrie back to my main, idk why it switched sometime back)

I am full of faults but I do appreciate that I was taught to just - try - make everyone in a room understand what is going on.
Like leaving a room, I usually say why I am leaving…
It feels weird when I am put in a situation where people just make zero attempt at being friendly and show inclusive behaviour; unless they are mad with me. That is the only reason I would not try include someone, if I dislike them.

Having friends accross the globe, I’d say most try make themself understood or apologize if they have to talk their own language. (myself included).
Like asking for a certain thing in your own language because you don’t know how to ask it in the common spoken one, these things are all fine and normal.
Just feel like it’s not normal to sit around speaking X language when majority around you are of Y language.

Again, might just be me.
I’d love to have an actual clarification on the subject tho from Blizz, since this USED to be common sense and I am frankly sure it used to be in the ToS to - try - speak English and/or know English to play.
Not like a “Dont be here if you dont”, but more a “Try to”.

Im babbling, it’s late, and servers are down… :dracthyr_uwahh_animated:

“I’m so courteous I rail against people speaking their own language in a public place.”

You can’t make this crap up.

How am I a racist? I’m not the one trying to impose my will on others. Get a grasp on reality there champ.
If its a reference to calling Japan a generally racist society, thats pretty accurate as a headline as google will show. Repeating a well sourced conclusion doesn’t make me a racist. But trust you to twist stuff, just as a person trying to ask a question in their own language is characterized as “people acting like they own the place”. Dishonest at best.

It baffles me that you don’t show decency by allowing people to speak the language of their choice in a public setting.

I was low key ignoring you but I think I’ll approach Blizzard and ask if its appropriate that people are met with such unwelcoming pettyness from the likes of you when they are trying to find their way in a new game.
