I’m a fan of the GeForce 940M, it was the best gfx I could find in a laptop for my budget two years ago. £299 for a second hand one with an i5 and a 2GB GeForce 940M.
For an everyday laptop on a budget its a good choice and runs Classic and Retail just fine.
HD4000
8GB ram
max resolution, settings on 3 - 40-60fps.
Paid like 70 euro for it. Im happy.
My main is a macbook, but im not frying it with games.
Just get something with a ryzen apu in it, intel integrated is useless.
2500u based laptop would play WoW no sweat while being cheap.
Classic WoW is not that hardware dependable as Retail.
FPS depends a lot on your resolution, so if you want modern notebook with 1080p screen.
You should get notebook with these specs:
- Graphic Card: MX150 or Vega 8 or better.
- CPU: Ryzen 3xxx or Intel 7th-8th gen ( preferably 7th )
- SSD not lower than 128 GB, preferably more
- Not less than 8 GB of ram ddr4
- Good cooling solution
The cooling is very important, because if the notebook has bad cooling, then it will overheat and slow down performace → less FPS.
Thats also the reason I wrote preferably 7th gen intel chip, because it may be 2 generation older, so it has little bit lower performance but makes significantly less heat in the process and that beats the newer generations.
But how can you tell which laptops have decent cooling and which don’t? It’s not exactly listed in the specs.
You are right, there is usually no indication in the specs how good the cooling solutions is.
But that doesnt mean you cant find it.
You have to make your research, google heat / performance tests, find videos on youtube where someone opens it and shows whats inside ( how many and big heath pipes it has… how much and how big fans it has ). More and bigger fans are more effective and less noisy… and the more thicker heatpipes are, the more heat they can absorb.
It takes a little bit of time but does it matter ? If you wanna spend your money on something, you should always do some research.
Btw: You can always help your laptop by buying extra cooling pad with fans and place the laptop on it whenever you play a game. But it kinda defeats the purpose of mobile computer.
Or you can give it to someone to change the thermal paste for liquid metal, but its costly, you may lose your warranty and its just better in general to buy better laptop with that extra money.
Thanks. I’m also looking at getting a laptop and many of the options are Ryzen 5s with Vega 8. Sounds decent for the price, but something I keep coming across is that they are often throttled by the manufacturer to keep temps in check.
