With the announcement of Season of Discovery (SoD) and Cataclysm I get the feeling that there’s both great joy and great bitterness amongst the community. For some people the news was exactly what they had hoped for and for others it might be the final nail in the coffin.
The community seem to be split mainly under these wishes:
- Some people want a fresh classic server to start anew and hopefully without the insane botting/inflation problem.
- Others want The Burning Crusade (me included) in the same way Classic Legacy currently exists, simply because we enjoyed that expansion the most and have so far been unable to play it since Classic Wotlk arrived.
- Then we have the players currently enjoying Wrath of the Lich King and who now dreads losing their characters to Cataclysm, an expansion that they have no interest in playing.
- And then finally there are the people who wished for classic + and Cataclysm. Their wishes were heard and granted with the introduction of Season of Discovery/Cataclysm, glad for your sake, hope you enjoy the expansions!
I have nothing against SoD, nor do I have anything against Cataclysm – yet I do not intend to play either one of them, simply because I love the earlier versions of the game with a passion. It’s not that SoD or Cataclysm are necessarily bad versions of the game. I simply feel the earlier expansions were so good that they are the ones I wish to stick to.
We have now played through all 3 of the “classic” expansions and for some time I have been wondering the following:
Why not have one permanent server for each classic expansion: Classic WoW, The Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King? For example: 1 legacy server (like the current Classic Era) and 1 fresh server that refreshes its cycle over and over, letting characters be transferred to the legacy realm at the end of that expansion.
Would this not benefit both the World of Warcraft community and the company by doing this? Players can choose to play each expansion based on his or her taste, and if the interest for one of the expansions wanes the other expansions offer their version to be enjoyed. All of them charges the monthly subscription after all and in the end, is that not better than having people quit?
The only argument I can find against this would be that the costs of keeping up 2x servers of each expansion outweighs the subscription fees. Yet I seriously doubt the cost of 5x additional servers (current Classic Legacy + fresh Classic + 2x for TBC and 2x for Wotlk) would be unfeasible.
In my humble opinion, let people decide for themselves which expansion(s) they enjoy the most and play thereafter.
Please, share your thoughts folks!
