Wrong. The lore was mostly fine and added background to previous events. Sure a couple things could’ve been handled better (like how are kyrian not villains) but overall . My third fav
I have somewhat funny story about that. Someone asked something lore related in /Newcommer chat, and later proceeded to praise WoWs sotry, some else told him to stay away from SL, the newbie asked what happens in SL and the someone completely different just told him about the Jailor, Arthas, Sylvanas, the cosmic 3D printers etc. The newbie just replied “I don’t think I like WoWs story anymore” and I never saw him again.
Wrong again. It didn’t add context it was retconned in. Adding context means not changing the events but adding to them, SL changed the events. Take Uthers fight with Arthas for example, in the original RTS it was pretty much him and Arthas fighting, then in the RotLK novel it added the context that Uther actually had the upper hand but hesitated because he saw Arthas as what he was and not what he is, in SL we removed that and just made Uther wanting to kill Arthas because he forgot about “compassion”. There are more examples of this if you would like to hear them, but I think I made my point.
Awww, poor thing lol.
What I found interesting with the cinematic for TWW is that in a way one could interpret it as a continuation from Legion. DF is largely detached from SL. Maybe in a few years time we can just forget it happened
Not how I interpreted it, it is a continuation of Legion due to the sword but it heavily focused around Anduin’s trauma from the Jailor. And by the looks of things in DF with Odyn mentioning the Zerets, dowloading Tyr’s OS into his new body, Lady Maabaries etc., it’s looking like SL lore is here to stay.
breaths vs slapface, my favourite anime battle
Yep, in that sense I didn’t mean a hard retcon. Maybe more of a ‘vaguely glossing over’ haha, but you’re right, those details are still there.
Shadowlands ruined the story for me. Legion was nothing but great. Shadowlands ruined the mystery of several concepts, and I hate it. It made the lich king a tiny pawn of no value, and I never really cared fot that story. It was when SL ruined it, I realised how good it was. SL also destroyed the titans. Made them seem pointless. And now I struggle with the story of the emerald dream because of SL too. It’s super annoying. I’m just glad they didn’t reveal Elune. I was really worried we would get to conclude Elune too.
After or around patch 9.2, he unsubbed to WOW. And apart from the few times he went into DF to check it out, he hasn’t returned. As far as I’m aware, he played WOW since the very beginning. So with how bad SL was, he decided to be done with it. But we’re not here to talk about a single streamer.
I’ve wanted to write this for ages, but I’ve been busy.
First of all, when you claim something is the ‘worst’, you need something to compare it to the best, and you can only experience those highs and lows when you’ve experienced it yourself. Now you’ve made it very clear to me that you’ve only played DF in WOW, but you’ve claimed that you know “every piece of lore” which I highly disbelieve because that would require knowing over 19 years of World Of Warcraft, dozens of books, the entire Warcraft RTS series and more.
We also need to associate bad with not interesting. Not interesting is something subjective that is entirely on you. For me, I subjectively believe DF is weak in the lore because I find the whole dragon lore weak compared to other pieces of lore. Despite that, there haven’t been any major plotholes, or characters that have been annihilated in terms of their writing. In comparison, SL lore is objectively bad because it retconned previous WOW lore, had so many plotholes that the story might as well have been a block of Swiss cheese, and destroyed so many characters in terms of writing it’s ridiculous. Its biggest sin however was making the entire concept of death in the Warcraft universe which was so powerfully done in Warcraft 3, a joke. That’s GOT season 8 levels of writing. Special mention to 9.1 lore in particular. To be fair, some of SL lore’s failures I leave right at the feet of BFA, most notably when Sylvanas decided to become female Arthas and turned Teldrassil into morally grey ashes (if you get that reference, good on you :P).
I really don’t want to ruin this for you XD.
You just did I guess.
Dude thank you, finally a reasonable person
I think it all comes from the belief that “The opposite of Love is Apathy and not Hate”, or “No such thing as bad press”, which both are objectively wrong. The opposite of 1 is not 0, 0 is the neutral state, the opposite of one is -1. I obv can’t speak for him but, I think his argument hinges on “Bad is better than boring”. But what he fails to realize is that while “boring” and “bad” could potentially destroy a story, we need to take into consideration the quantity of said “bad” and/or “boring”. In WoW we have had both “bad” and “boring” stories, but even in those times people managed to cling to the good times like the RTS lore, WotLK, epic characters etc. What SL did was ruined all the things that the WoW fanbase used to cling to during the “bad/boring times”.
I agree that DFs lore is mid at best, but now when I think of Arthas (for example), I can’t help but associate him with “Failed attempt of a Lich King, pawn of the Jailor, blue fart cloud”.
Yes because something 10 years after they died ruins the whole of what came before
Shadowlands tops both of them.
The evergreen systems in DF are all bad though (except, arguably, for dragonflying, although that is a much more complex debate).
Even talents will inevitably be pruned as it has just created too much complexity.
Meanwhile we didnt even get ANYTHING like the Mage Tower lol… Even though DF followed an abandoned expansion
Profession rework is also terrible
FOMO post extremely predatory and just there to sell tenders and keep ppl subbed to get unobtainable mounts / mogs.
They’re adding even MORE talents with the Hero Talents in TWW.
“Too much complexity” is good. Casuals better L2P.
Yfaihyafdmad
You are talking utter garbage… Why spout such lies.
Legion had a story that many wow fans knew about and were invested in… It also made the player feel very much part of the story.
Dragonflight is an out right better overall expansion… It’s just the story is well kinda boring.
