honestly i rarely saw that meme in action back in 2004 it was generally just other classes stealing my Tier 0 i saw a lot like if your playing a paladin and having a warrior ninja most of your lightforged armor 
of course 10 man dungeons was a thing back then so there lot of dice rivals

But I definitely saw shamans and hunters competing over strength and intellect mail. And sometimes leather or cloth, because there was no penalty for equipping lighter armour.
And I never quite forgave our raiding holy paladin for outbidding my shaman on the mail shoulders I had saved all my DKP for in Karazhan. I was salty as heck for weeks. I think he quit the guild not long after which really didn’t help.
