Lore Questions Hub

Inspired by the Headcanon thread which has often become a double purpose thread with lore questions being asked and answered/debated, let this be a space for random questions about lore to be asked and fielded by resident lore nerds.

Hopefully this prevents any of us having to set foot in the dread Lore forums.

To kick us off, I had a weird question when I was thinking about druids last night.

As shown by Malfurion in one of the War of the Ancient books, Malfurion asks the land to spare it’s life to help revive the dragon Krasus and repair his wounds. With that in mind, theoretically, could a druid spare some of their own life force to perform a similar thing?

Are there any examples of this? If not, what would be the likely consequences? Withered hand? Sickness that can be recovered from?

Not sure if that has ever been mentioned in lore, but I do Think it’d be possible.

Maybe the same as the Drain Life stuff warlocks uses, aging.

In theory, yes. And while there aren’t any examples of it to my knowledge, the consequences would be pretty bad. General deterioration of the body, aging, stuff like that; things that one doesn’t necessarily recover from quickly.

Malfurion uses the earth and flora specifically because of its ability to regenerate. After all, you can prune plants and they will grow back. Not so much for a person…

Troll supremacy continues.

oh no oh heck!

Do we know what the state of our Dark Portal is currently? It was hijacked by the Iron Horde and cut off from Outland, but is this still the case? Or are we relying solely on mage portals to get to Outland these days?

I think we can assume it’s been restored, the implication is that Saurfang used it to go and see his good friend and co-conspirator Thrall in Nagrand. Or if you believe him, he followed Sylvanas’ assassins that way.

Otherwise he wouldn’t have needed to make the trip down to the Swamp of Sorrows.

And we smashed the Iron Horde Connection in the intro quests to Draenor.

So the old Outland Connection might’ve somehow returned. Unless Saurfang became a War Mage somehow…

One that’s bugged me, and I’ve done the LFD unlock quest, but what is the exact standing of Light Forged Draenei in that race’s society? I know what the difference is, as in they undergo trials and get infused with the Light, but how are they viewed by Draenei society as a whole? Are they better? are they of same standing? recognised for their sacrifice but equal, as in just people who chose a different path?

Is for example, a Lightforged Vindicator more powerful/socially higher up than a normal Draenei Vindicator? I can’t find any info on that, anyone know?

They shouldn’t be.

Their Power are steroided Light, while the other draenei actually trained without being blessed by the Light (in that way). Lightforged should be a tier down than a true Vindicator.

A great idea for a thread Akamito!

On with the show.

Would a draenei be inherently corrupted by proxy of Fel, or could a draenei be an uncorrupted Warlock on par with the playable ones?

Do Dark Iron beards/hair literally burn, or is it more of a visual expression of their fiery nature that doesn’t present a fire hazard?

Do Lightforged undergo a change of personality, having vanquished all doubt and fear from their very being?

What is the social “fit” for draenei mages? Do they even exist at this point, or have they all become crystal-smiths or enchanters?

Yes, the Sargerei in Shadowmoon Valley aren’t corrupted.

Rule of Cool.

None seems to show any particular fear, so maybe?

They do exist, and I guess some would be scholars.

We don’t know for certain but I think it’s safe to say no, it’s simply cosmetic.

Clearly the Dark Iron uses cloth and paper as frequently as anybody else with no issue, unless literally everything is enchanted with fire resistance.

They definitely exist. Even among the Lightforged, though not as many. Archmage Y’mera being a notable one. She notes that “Few among us still wield true magic after we saw what tempted our brethren. I will take any advantage I can get.”

She could just be referring to the Lightforged, but we don’t see much of an arcane culture in the main exodar faction either, so chances are they’re around but not particularly numerous, nor politically/culturally influential.

That was fast! Thanks everyone, that clears up some of the fog-of-lore.

There are several draenei mages on Draenor, Socrethar being a notable example. Most of them turn into sargerei however, so there’s that to consider. Then again, as noted, most smiths clearly use arcane magic for their research.

I don’t think they have one - much like, say, shamans. They’re just kinda there, doing what an average mage should do. Some of them can rise up high in the ranks of the draenei (again, Othaar/Socrethar was a mage) and others seen your average mage soldier. The auchenai have themselves a few arcanists.

Edit.

They’re basically trained to go through all types of shenanigans, plus you have to consider that the Light infuses you with warm emotions - and LF are literally an incarnation of the Light. I’d say they’re less likely to experience negative feelings than your average draenei.

except they had to work long and hard to even get to the point where they were allowed to undergo the trials, and no doubt already had a powerful connection to the Light prior to it. It’s not like they’re their own species/get Lightforged the day the come of age.

Their will is literally that of their deities so I guess there’s a major ego trip in play for many.

I’ve done this in roleplay a couple of times on Areo. I’ve only done it when there was nearby wildlife to ask for assistance and he weakens himself substantially by doing so.

I haven’t given permanent consequences for it, just made it the equivalent of taking a serious but not debilitating injury. But I think if the circumstances required it, I think it would be cool to give him long-term drawbacks as a consequence.

Idk if it’s enshrined in lore though. I just think it makes sense until proven otherwise.
