Lorewise which is more powerful Unholy dk or Frost dk

Without thinking about pve/pve in lore what deathknight is more powerful a frost or unholy? When i think frost i think of it have a frostwrym as a pet and the odd ghoul but unholy i think of hordes of ghouls abominations gargoyles etc

Whichever one has the better transmog.

I don’t know if we really have any examples to indicate it in any canon sense. But just on a whim from the top of my head I wanna say unholy is probably more destructive on a large scale, whereas frost is probably more of a single combat type death knight? But don’t quote me on that I am just theorizing.

definetely the one called Nekrros loses.

Depends on the DKs in question, I think. Unholy and frost DKs aren’t mononilithic. They all have different methods and power levels.

The setting isn’t paper rock scissors.

Frost is definitely the cooler spec.

Unholy is definitely stronger and more handsome, and also smarter. This post is completely unbiased :sunglasses:

I guess it’s fair to assume all the DK specs are on similar power-level, they just have different approaches to combat. I don’t think there’s any canon source that states if any spec is the best or the worst. However, Thassarian and Thoras Trollbane seem to be frost death knights, Koltira is a blood death knight and Nazgrim an unholy one. Oh, and -my- Deathlord is frost death knight, so there’s that.

Me

I would think its the opposite based on how many more aoe attacks frost have.
unholy spreads plague and summons zombies, but frost freeze everything infront and around him, slowing down rows of enemies while they only move faster.

Wouldn’t this just prove Hiyorins theory? Based on how we know plagues to work they can very easily spread and infect a whole continent in mere weeks to months. A single infected person and then days later the whole army encampment is sick.

Frost on the other hand will freeze everything around which you can definitely survive but makes it harder to escape the angry death machine.

This is defintiely the correct answer, even if it’s kind of unsatisfying. It’s the same with the various schools of arcane magic or different approaches to warlock’s evil deeds - if any one method of combat were more powerful in all scenarios in the lore, then there wouldn’t need to be any other specs. Why bother harnessing frost runes if unholy runes do everything better, or vice-versa?

That being said, I think in the case of these two specs (in my opinion) frost would be the better in a spontaeneous, one-versus-one duel of death knight versus death knight. Unless something catastrophic happens to Azeroth, there will always be air or water to freeze an opponent, but an unholy death knight wouldn’t necessarily always have bodies at hand to ressurect into shambling ghouls to aid them, so frost could just win the war of attrition against unholy in that situation.

Conversely, if there is some time to prepare or they’re fighting on a recently fought-on battlefield - I think unholy has the upper hand and the ghouls just get to zerg rush down the frost-wielder and overwhelm them before they can get an opening to strike down the unholy.

But the REAL answer is that the death knight who most closely alligns themselves with the current protagonist of a given expansion is the one who’s going to win. So if it’s another faction war - go with the Alliance. (hehe)

It pretty clearly is.

Blood is better than Frost, because Blood is warm, so it melts the frost and makes it just water. No one wants to play a Water Death Knight.
Frost is better than Unholy, because it freezes all the icky plagues and stops them from being able to do anything.
Unholy is better than Blood, because it makes the blood all diseased and bad.

Classic rock paper scissors.

It does depend on your foe.
priests can purify the plague and paladins are immune to it.
and I would argue a paladin is a hard counter to unholy.

but only a fire mage or maybe a destro warlock can hope to out pace a frost death knight.

ice wizard might be a even match against one in terms of cold, but then the death knight have the increased strength and no fatigue.

I would probably still hand it to frost if the question was who would win in a duel between frost and unholy.
because as death knights I suspect the plague isn’t as effective while frost can dispatch large groups by freezing them in place, rendering the mob advantage null.

How about I freeze ur blood, bozo

Strong words are being used!

Have to go with Loras, hey have nerd glasses on so I think they know more

While I think that all three specs are equally strong, if I -had- to choose… I’d say Frost.

Simply because the other two rely on alot of bodies lying around to either raise or draw the blood from. Frost in the meantime does not need outside fuel to do what they do, they just fight entirely on their own.
