I want to level a new character as my main in classic wow but I don’t know if I should level a mage or warlock.
Mages:
I like that they have portals and teleports to cities and they have free food and man pots. Frost seems fun cuz you can slow people in pvp with frostbolt and you have frost nova and some other abilities.
What I’ve heard they are good at farming gold for the mount and that people wants you for most of the dungeons cuz of your cc and aoe and ofc food and water.
I probably forgot something but I can’t think of it now so…
Warlock:
They lookd a bit more interesting than mage imo because they have demons and use dark magic. They can summon people, create health and soulstones.
I’ve heard that they are good in pvp but I don’t know how they are at leveling.
They also gett a free lvl 40 mount and cheaper lvl 60 mount that looks really cool imo.
One thing that I don’t like is that they use soulshards. YOu need soulshards for some abilities and they don’t stack in your bag so it will take up alot of bag space to keep some.
Overall:
I like both mages and warlocks but in different ways and I don’t really know what class I should play and it’s hard to choose.
Also I don’t play so much so a friendly leveler and a class that people want to play with in raids and dunegons would be nice. Also that you don’t have to gear up alot to be good like warriors.
What would you choose and why?
Thanks!
Edit:
Will it be harder for me to get intro groups for dungeons and raids as a mage becasue so many people play them?
And will it be easier for me to get into groups for dungeons and raids as a warlock because not so many people play as them?
Or do peolpe prefer warlocks over mages or the other way around?
As i read what you want, a mage world be best for you. No issue getting grp since all grps want atleast 1 mage due to buff and food, can solo most quest, fast lvling and fun to play in pvp and pve,
Warlock takes abit more time to lvl and will almost all the time be overtaken in grp when a mage ask for inv at same time.
Also that you don’t have to gear up alot to be good like warriors.
dunno where people get this from. warriors are the best class at any gear level unless u compare them to a different class at least a tier in gear above, even then a prebis warrior will outdps a t1-t2 caster unless u are in some really bad pug or guild with no world buffs nor debuff management.
Really depends on what you want out of your class - both Mages and Warlocks have a vastly different toolset.
Warlocks weren’t particularly popular during vanilla and, as such, there are far more people playing them now - especially as they scale excellently (PvE-wise) with gear. Despite some claims to the contrary, you’ll never be top-DPS as a warlock in a half-decent raid group… Partially because Warriors and Mages are so strong in every tier, but also because you’ll find yourself threat capped once you start to pick up a bunch of hit gear (BWL/ZG) and you’ll never be given the opportunity to unleash your full package of dots on a raid boss (due to debuff limit and threat). I can’t speak with any authority when it comes to PvP, but Warlocks have some decent PvP viability with multiple specs (deep destro, SM/Ruin, Soul Link etc).
They’re also one of the easiest classes to level thanks to having a VW to tank, soul stones, healthstones, lifetap, drain life etc - your downtime is minimal, even if you don’t have the insane AOE farm potential of a mage. Maraudon farming with herbalism and mining can also net you around 50g an hour, which isn’t terrible, but also isn’t anything close to Mage ZF farm potential.
Trying to take my Warlock bias out of the mix - mages are probably the “best” all round class in WoW. Strong in every PvE tier, excellent farm/AOE potential, great control and mobility toolset, one of the strongest solo PvP classes… There’s an abundance of them though, like seriously - they’re the new “huntards” of WoW.
