So I’m having a really hard time to pick a main dps class. I’m a casual player which means I obviously won’t have that much time to do dungeon runs, and even less for a raid (if ever). So most of my time I’ll be open world questing on a PVE server.
The question is: Which one do you recommend for someone like me? Obviously the best answer would be to pick the one I have most fun with, but if your recommendations doesn’t suit me after a while then I can always pick up the other one so that won’t be a problem.
The thing is, even though the chances of raiding will be very small, I’d like to consider factors as gear dependency. Like if in this case both a mage and a warlock would be equally geared, would one of them suffer more than the other when the gear is bad or do both suffer/not suffer that much from not having optimal gear in a pve environment?
Also, affliction dotting and lifetapping might be optimal but seems boring to me, as does frost AOE. So even though destro is far less efficient than affli, how does it compare to say single target frost mage? Is it THAT much worse or is it just worse compared to affliction but still good overall compared to other dps classes in solo open world leveling (and dungeons)?
Well I get your point but I’m asking this question anyway since I plan to play this game for me, not for pleasing the crowd with more class diversity.
That said, I do appreciate some answers to my questions so I can decide for myself whether I’ll join the dark force or become the next dime in a dozen.
Warlocks have far less downtime and less gear dependency. I find /castsequence macros are your friend for a warlock.
Warlocks take more time to kill stuff but less downtime so it kind of equals out. Also Locks can send the pet in and wand while recovering mana. Or drain tank.
Thx for the info! Also, how do destro locks compare to say single target frost mage or just overall solo leveling? I know it’s not as good as affliction (draintank), but how does it compare overall to the other dps classes when solo leveling?
For open world questing it doesn’t matter too much, it will vary depending on the quest/mobs and fear/slow immunity. Personally I prefer mage as their cc is a lot more predictable than warlock’s. For some reason I don’t find mobs running out of rendering range and evading very fun.
For any kind of dungeon I would also bring a mage over a warlock every time. Doesn’t matter if it’s deadmines or zul’farrak or stratholme. Mages just have way better utility.
It’s garbage. You get more down time, more pushbacks and can’t make your own food/water.
Destro is more dungeon based but I’ve never compared them with a single target frost mage, which I’m sure is an oxymoron.
You should really use the voidwalker, that’s my opinion, others never agree, it’s not that much slower and you don’t need food or water with life tap, consume shadows and drain life. It also eliminates pushback.
It doesn’t really matter what you do for solo leveling. Just pick the class that you think is fun to play. Sometimes i level with “bad” leveling specs because i simply enjoy the playstyle more. Just try out leveling as destro yourself - you can respec if you don’t like it anymore. You are complete free to play how you want unless you want to play with other players, they might expect a certain standard ^^
There are plenty of class guides on youtube if you want to get more info about the classes.
I know but I’d first like to hear others opinions and recommendations before I make a decision. Because I don’t have any experience at the higher levels, so I can’t know that myself.
And since my time is very limited, I’d like to try the class that comes out as most suitable for me.
Ofcourse I could always swap classes after a while when I don’t like what I’m currentle playing , but playing something that in the end doesn’t suit me or ends up tedious and unenjoyable while having limited time isn’t a fun experience. I know that what others recommend for me might not end up being my cup of tea either, but at least chances are higher that the class might click with me or at least I’d be more informed and get some wiser after hearing other opinions from more seasoned players. ^^
Warlocks do indeed have a easier path to 60 and quite alot if advantages in PvP. In dungeons and raids you would be doing more or less the same thing on both, but you would need more/better gear to perform on a Warlock.
However, as you labeled yourself as “casual”, I’d recommend Mage.
You can craft your own food/water whenever you need it - login and play at once!
You will have teleport and gain alot of time teleporting and hearthstoning (back to quests/points of interest) instead of running and waiting (for boats and zeppelins).
Knowing how much time I wasted on other characters compared to my Mage kinda makes me bitter ^^
In Classic, the answer of all questions is mage.
Questing, farming, world content, pve, pvp, cathcing, escaping, naked dancing…
The answer is always mage.
Single target frost mage is just incomparable for casual questing. Free water/food. Teleport all over the place. Want to do a dungeon? Water for mana users, int buff, reliable permanent cc, freezing mobs before they get to healer? They will love you.
It is the comfiest, most casual friendly spec I ever played. Don’t listen to fools like
Single target frost is perfect for levelling, if not as fast as AoE frost. Single mobs won’t even reach you. 2 mobs? Nova and kill! 3 mobs? Sheep, nova, kill kill kill. More then three? No problem, your blizzard still slows, if they aint above your level, you’ll kill them anyway, despite occasional frostbite procc.
I levelled a frost mage mid way through Vanilla, and I’ve never been able to enjoy levelling anything else. It’s a casual’s dream. Yes, you need to drink every 4th or 5th mob you kill. So what? The water’s free, and it’s a perfect time to take a sip of your coffee or another beverage of choice.
Depends.
Do you want to play on easy mode and have the entirety of Classic handed to you on a silver platter?
Or do you want to play a far more flavorful class that will only get better with later (inevitable) expansions?
It’s up to you, Mages are the strongest class in Classic but fall off in TBC, Warlocks aren’t as strong but become much stronger in TBC.
I wouldn’t know, I don’t boost or AoE farm. I tried the ZG graveyard farm back in phase 2, but I found it mind-numbingly boring. As a mage you are basically a mediocre raid dps with decent AoE, and everyone assumes you are filthy rich for some reason.
Affliction can juggle 2-3 mobs nonstop, pretty much without drinking.
Hardcasting SBs while putting on DoTs that dont even get to tick their full duration wont be as affective and most likely would take aggro from the demon at once.
There’s no doubt affliction is superior, if pushing and efficiency is what people want.
Warlock is more fun (imo) but mage has teleports, portals, food and drinks and blink. Both are great for leveling though, although warlocks can solo stuff easier imo.
