Considering all the other class/race combos they’ve allowed over the years, it has nothing to do with lore at this point. Probably just not enough people have screamed about it yet. Also there’s cloth-wearing Twilight’s Hammer tauren casters in Blackrock Depths iirc.

Tauren mages exist - they’re all just casting invisibility permanently. They hang around in Thunderbluff next to the Tauren rogues.

There were Tauren magi shown in the Hearthstone trailer.
Imagine the smell if you have a tauren fire mage in your party. I would be hungry all day.

Tauren rogues exist too, but they are sooo good we can’t even see them
