Mages when leveling

From level 20 onwards. How do you level? What rotation do you use against single targets? What I do: frostbolt fireball fireblast frost nova run fireball and arcane explosion if I have to.

As far as i know almost all mages AoE lvl from… 22 level i think ? it is much faster that way.

As one who did not level through aoe lvling because it was so boring and felt like more effort than just doing Qs, partly because one has to compete with other aoe lvlers.

I just spam frostbolt, nova when they get close, more frostbolt and maybe a fireblast to finish em off, works quite well.

I also find AoE leveling boring. I begin to look for +spell dmg gear on AH from about lvl 25 and on so that i’ll be fully decked with SD from 30 to 60. Usually this means fire damage gear since it’s cheaper than frost gear.

AoE is more efficient, no doubt, but i enjoy 2-shotting mobs of my level and being a top dps in dungeons.

I leveled my mage as frost. For single target you use frostbolt and if needed you kite, frost nova move away, blink away. You rarely get hit if at all.

Thanks, seems like i’m not too far off what others are doing. I do seem to have a drinking problem though! Almost after every fight.

If its not your first char, buy best water you can use, mage water is rarely best available.

You better go frost from now on and try to look for gear with spirit intel and spell power for solo targets.

And yes, mages do have a drinking problem:)

Choose either AOE or single - you cant do both without gimping yourself.
For AOE, improved blizzard makes it easy.
For single, the 15% chance on freeze with frostbolt makes it easy ( dont remember the talent name)

Both are super nice, single targets fun because once you stack some spellpower you can literally just press frostbolt all the way up, super chilling netflix leveller

You get a good wand. Like proper good wand.

Then you start of with a Frostbolt to apply slow, ice/chill/freeze effects (to slow the target down), and then press Shoot. If the mob does not die before it reaches you, you use Frost Nova, blink away and continue with Shoot.

This way you save mana, which will make it possible for you to just jump on the next mob when the first one dies. Plus, the DPS from the wand often out damages regular spells at lower levels.

But this only works with single target dmg. You’ll have to learn kiting and AoE spells if you’re to take out a pack of mobs at a time.

Good luck!

Get ye wand, lad!

Precision 3, Improved frostbolt 2, frostbite 3, improved nova 2, ice shards 5, shatter 5, and possibly permafrost, then pick whatever else you like in frost tree (snap, block, rest of frostbolt, range, barrier etc)
Then you just frostbolt the mob, if it reaches you, nova, blink away and continue frostbolting. Even elites will die before reaching you again, as long as you get a shatter or two.
Aim for gear with int/spirit (Owl) or frost damage (Frozen Wrath).
I personally find AoE farming distasteful, so I did the above to great effect. You can conserve mana by wanding after two or three frostbolts, but I found I didn’t need to, with planty of spirit on gear I only had to drink once every 4 or 5 mobs.
