World of Warcraft used to be Metal (and no, I am not talking about E.T.C only)
The characters used to be badass, struggling with very real inner demons, dealing with questions and challenges that were profoundly deep (Instead of the current whining, victim syndrome, trauma dump we have on the NPC’s now)
The quests used to be dark and brutal (Metal AF, but also stories that give a lot of reason for thought and pondering about the human nature and our capacity to both cause and endure suffering)
For example:
The Legend of Stalvan in Duskwood, tutor who falls in love with one of his students and, after being rejected, goes mad and murders her entire family. We follows clues leading to the discovery of Stalvan’s journal, which details his descent into madness and the gruesome murders he committed.
Brutal, deep, METAL!
The Hills Have Eyes in Hillsbrad, you’re a forsaken disguising yourself as a human and turning yourself in to gain the trust of the local authorities, only to later betray and murder them.
Brutal, METAL.
In the House of the Scarab in Silithus, you go the Temple of Ahn’Qiraj and slaughter the Qiraji, The temple is filled with horrific scenes of sacrifices, mutilations, and the desecration of both Qiraji and mortal remains.
we are tasked with assassinating specific high-ranking members of the Qiraji and their priests, often finding themselves amid scenes of violent rituals and brutal deaths.
METAL, BRUTAL, DEEP.
A Fate Worse Than Death, Eastern Plaguelands , This quest chain in the Eastern Plaguelands involves hunting down and killing various undead creatures that were once human. The truly disturbing part comes when you discover that some of these undead were cursed to remain aware of their actions and suffering, even as they commit atrocities under the control of the Scourge.
We put their souls down , but not before witnessing the horrors they were forced to endure and the violent acts they were made to commit.
BRUTAL, DISTURBING, METAL!!!
And the list goes on and on…
But for a while now we have cringe, power of friendship conquers all, rainbow bullcrap quests to cater to a weak audience that cannot stand mild violence in a cartoony art video game, with shallow silly quests that neither teaches us anything nor makes us ponder about deeper questions (Like metal song lyrics do!)
So…MAKE WoW METAL AGAIN.
Or see it’s descent into even more irrelevant, cringe plots.
