Mereldar Murders, Episode I

During the darkness of a Shadow Curfew, a local farmer, Avril Embershed, was found dead in an alleyway of Mereldar City with an Arathi dagger in her back. High Priest Lumenius hosts a sermon on the importance of justice, one of Prophet Mereldar’s Five Pillars in the Church of the Sacred Flame. He then invites volunteers among his trusted people to investigate the murder.

Discovered clues:

  • Sentry Clarke was the first on the scene and says he immediately locked it down, awaiting further orders.

  • The knife was of Arathi motif and smithed using Arathi techniques. It bore the hallmark of Aeden Braesmeld, a local weaponsmith. When questioned, Aeden revealed that he had sold the dagger to Avril Embershed herself three years ago.

  • There were no bloodstains or trails at the scene, barring the blood of drying blood that settled around Avril’s stomach. Tracks appeared to have been deliberately covered as there were fewer footprints than there would normally be around the scene.

  • Avril’s tinderbox had been taken from her.

  • An old, partially ruined love letter was found in the nearby bushes, all that could be made out was “… where we meet, my love. At times when darkness reigns, we might find comfort of our own. How I wish we might never be…”

  • A child called Eadward who lives in one of the nearby houses said he heard a woman’s scream five minutes before Beledar shifted back to the Light. His mother refused to let anyone leave the house for fear of the Void, and he now assumes the woman who screamed was Avril.

  • Gheleon was able to use magic to discover that Avril, when she was dying, had her hands clasping her face and she was sobbing profusely.

  • Gheleon and Mollie discovered that her spirit appeared to be cursed by some external power which was slowly and insidiously poisoning her soul with shadow.

  • Avril Embershed lived in the farms to the southeast of Mereldar, at the northernmost farmstead. Her husband was informed by the Sentries of her death following her discovery.

  • Under questioning, her husband, Mr. Embershed, revealed that Avril always abided by the Shadow Curfew at Beledar’s Bounty, their home, but what she did on her trips to the city to sell produce, he could not say.

  • Embershed further stated that she would often stay at the inn, and would set up her stall right next to it. She was close to Wren Willstead, whom he appeared jealous of, Jennie Mills, a local “loose” woman, and Archibald Highflame.

  • The Embershed Ledger revealed that Avril’s trips to Mereldar were far more frequent than any farmer would truly require. When questioned Embershed said he believed Avril did this to only sell in small quantities rather than in bulk, because she was getting “on a bit in years.” Comparing the Ledger’s handwriting to that of the Love Letter found that the Love Letter was clearly written in a different handwriting to Avril’s. However, the signature given on purchase of the knife from Aeden does match the Ledger’s handwriting.
