Hi.
First post, and already complaining
But as a new player it`s very difficult to find names to my chars.
Almost everything is taken, and one almost want to give up on the start screen.
I wonder if Blizzard might have considered to add last names or something,so more than one person can have the same name on the server. I had to resort to those name generators, because i run out of alernatives.
So unless i want to name my next char âpoirbnmoim123â, which probaly is taken to , i think i will have a little trouble making more alts.
Rant over.
Great game btw.
Yoink!
They need to add â in names too.
Swtor has a much smaller playerbase yet the naming on that is much more versatile, I just donât get it.
Just make jibberish that sound like a name that race would have.
Surnames would add more options too.
Alt codes are your friend

If i had to choose a last name
All they have to do is allow using space in names. Then people who want to have surname can add one and possibilities for naming are endless. People can also then take other 2 part names (instead of actual surnames) and such.
They need to take a leaf out of the original Guild wars game. They allowed you to have up to three different words in your name, made it so much easier.
Or as an alternative, they need to do a yearly name clear where any characters who havenât logged in for x amount of years get a forced named change thus releasing those names back into the wild.
Just give everyone prior notice so if people want to keep their names they simple need to log in and out of that character.
Of course. Should have known better
Itâs probably unfair to say âthey just need to Xâ as WoW is an early generation MMORPG and its core systems are from the stone age, so there may be technical limitations putting up some barriers as to changing how the naming works. Itâs probably technically possible, but I donât think we should assume itâs a quick and easy fix. Until thereâs a financially based reason for Blizzard to do anything about it though, I wouldnât expect anything.
I do remember there was a âspring cleaningâ of names a long time ago, as Auluk suggests, and a compromise would be them doing more of those, with fair warning given out to people before it happens.
Oh and lucky you getting Ailena on that character there, it actually sounds like a name and works for a NE, imo.
Itâs on Doomhamer
At the start of every new expansion, they automatically release the names of characters whose accounts have been unsubbed for two expansions.
I donât think the problem is quite as bad as you feel it is.
Itâs just that very popular choices are all but guaranteed to be taken. Ripley for example, will likely never be an option. if youâre creative with names though, there is a good chance you can have what you want.
Iâve had very few problems with names. Triadne is generally available on most servers I choose to make a toon on. Tiraden is usually available if I ever want to make a male toon again. my old paladin name, Shangrilla used to be readily available. my choice for a orc warlock Artikayla, is not taken, except for on one server.
I will agree with you on surnames though. I would love that option. I mean so many characters in WoW have two names, why canât we? we are champions for crying out loud!
It was the recommended one for new players?
Honestly, I think this would be one of the easiest things for them to do technically. it would only require an extra data set in the database. They do that all the time when adding in their new systems, like azerite points etc.
I think the more troublesome aspects would be other design considerations such as, âwhat should be allowed as a surname?â and âhow long should character names be allowed to get on screen?â
It shouldnât take 2 whole expansions without activity for names bound to dead characters and accounts to be released, probably 90% of the characters holding names havenât seen activity in years.
Name purges for inactive toons should be done with every major patch honestly, if the character isnât being actively played on then someone else can use the name more.
Donât worry about it, this is a valid complaint, i play on NA and went to make this character on a EU realm, and i probably tried over 10 names and they were all taken before trying Landrien.
Um. Long story. Very long. Sadly, very common for new players to fall into it, because itâs not obvious, and why would a new player even think of it?
Very long.
The super-short version, skipping a couple centuries of history, and a semester of statistics, is that by far most people are better off choosing one of the largest realms with their faction in a dominant majority.
For Alliance: choose Silvermoon. For Horde: choose Draenor. You may have special interests that lead you to other realms, like if you want to do Role Play.
âNew Playerâ realms arenât specifically for new players. They are just realms that Blizzard wants to fill up, that donât have totally insane imbalances on one faction or another, so that Blizzard gets the benefit of spreading more players around, and new players donât get left in a totally awful situation. Blizzard rotate the âNew Playersâ label among low-population realms every few months, to distribute the intake of new people who donât know any better.
Right now, Blizzard have announced a merging or connection of realms will happen soon, so perhaps there is hope for low-pop realms like Doomhammer, but the specifics havenât been announced yet. Itâs obviously easier to get names on realms where few people play.
If you go for popular reals, check if they are linked with previously dead realms. Because then you can just select the linked realm instead which should contain a large amount unused names.
Managed to get a character named Rabies this way.
Oh⌠Thanks for telling me. And now i know.
And yet i had problems getting names. Can only imagine what a nightmare it would be on the most popular ones
