I think Kaldorei Paladins make even more sense than Tauren Paladins or Zandalari Paladins. The way the Priestesses of the Moon were portrayed in the War of the Ancients novels, some wearing armor, glaives and wielding Elune’s powers, they were pretty much Paladins. Just look at Nightwarrior Tyrande
I prefer calling them Sunwalkers, because it hints at the rich spirituality of the Taurens.
Shadowlands made all arguments about Tauren spirituality obsolete. There is no special afterlife for the ancestors or a realm of the Earth Mother.
Depends on one’s faith really, dunnit?^^
What I meant to say was that the term Sunwalker fits Tauren spirituality. Just because of SL their way of life/spirituality hasn’t vanished.
Furthermore, it draws, imo, a fine distiction between Human and Tauren “paladins”.
I don’t get how you find the Tauren less sensible then the Night elf ones then, Sunwalkers like Priestesses of Elune do not worship the light. They worship the Sun, where-as the Night elves worship the Moon. They’re practically on the same level of sensibility imo.
And I know what happened to the sunwalkers, they were there in legion using the light and having all their unique lore stripped away from them to make them come across more as regular paladins.
I fear they’ll do that to the night elf one, sure it’ll start as elune, but it’ll end with oh they’re just human paladins (long ears and blue skin)
I also still believe that wardens (rogue/warrior) and wc3 style priestesses of the moon (hunter/priest) fill that role in a much better way that fits the night elves properly.
What I meant was: The Kaldorei worship a moon godess for over tenthousand years already, the Tauren only started to pray to the sun in… Cataclysm(?). Both call upon the sun / moon and get Divine Light powers in return. Regarding Elune, we even have a reason to believe that she is connected to the Holy Light due to her connection to the Naaru.
We’ve seen multiple incarnations of “belief to the Holy Light”.
- Alliance races who believe in the Three Virtues of the Light.
- Zandalari Trolls who became Paladins by praying to a sparkling Tyrannosaurus.
- Tauren, who pray to the Sun
- Draenei who pray to the Light, but don’t have to believe, since they know the Naaru.
- The members of the Scarlet Crusade who could use the Light even for horrible means, as long as they believed, that it was “righteous” to do so.
- The Lightforged Draenei who wielded the Light aside the Naaru in a “holy war”.
Compared to all these, enhancing the belief in a Moon goddess and actually become what they already were in the novels (armored holy warriors) is not a big step
An’she worship (https://wowpedia.fandom.com/wiki/An%27she
) is not something new thing.
It is part of the tauren creation story, where they believe that azeroth birthed the sun after ‘completing’ her own surface and life on it.
I get the confusion cause the paladins weren’t added until cataclysm but these tauren ‘paladins’ worship Anshe and actually originally used sun magic. It used to be sunmagic or sunfire magic (like the sun themed abilities of balance druids), they were originally conceived to be more like sunfocussed balance druids that wear plate.
Then Legion came and Sunwalkers became regular paladins.
Tauren mythology has been hinted at to be ancient
I would argue here that Sunworship is not Lightworship, and that sunwalker lore is a lot less cool ever since they changed from sunmagic to lightmagic.
I also believe that once you do see a night elf paladin wielding golden bright light; Elune (the moon, silver or shadow) is the last thing that will come to mind, it doesn’t match up immersively.
If you wanna play a nelf paladin for the sake of playing a nelf paladin thats fine but lorewise it just doesn’t match up and it will only end in a bastardization of the (already somewhat damaged) elune worship lore, which is the main reason why I would rather not enhance the belief in Elune to grant access to the light, because we’ve already done that and the lore imo has not gotten better for it.
I know that An’she was always part of Tauren mythology, but they started to actively worship it during Cataclysm, didn’t they? It all started with a conversation about “praying to the sun”, if I remember correctly. Maybe Elune is where it all comes together; arcane magic, life magic, holy magic and nature magic - and who knows what kind of being An’she will be.
tl;dr
It’s another case of “wait and see”.
That’s why I’m an advocate for “class skins”, to give the races visual spells that match their cultural approach to a certain religion / power. It doesn’t make sense that Lightforged Draenei shadow priests use the void, just as Ren’dorei holy priests are weird.
As I said, just look at Nightwarrior Tyrande, a priestess in armor, with a glaive and holy magic. I agree that Nightelf Paladins shouldn’t use golden light though, it should be white then. Maybe connect it to a (future) questline where they encounter another Elune avatar who reveals to them that Ardenweald opened up a new way for balance, a new way to wield her powers. If Elune is truly “the moon”, she should be able to do the same thing as the real moon and reflect the light in her own way.
That is already proven false. Huln is in Ardenwaeld. If Religion mattered then Uther and Mograine would have gone to the light.
Nightborne paladins too!
I’d rather have Nightborne Druids > Paladins.
Nightborne Priest lore is practically none-existent, whereas Nightborne Druids would have something going for them with the whole “Arcan’dor” lore and the Valekeeper Druids.
Druids and Arcanists have never seen eye to eye.
The Nightborne and the Blood Elves have bonded because there is a strong common denominator, i.e. the arcane. Druids would thus make no sense for either group.
If you open that door, then you will soon have the kiddies shouting for Night Elf warlocks. Heaven forbid, but as the past has shown, Blizz will sell anything if there is even a hint of profit attached to it.
What they did to the priest class is sad enough.
My hope in that respect rests with Chris Metzen here. There would be no other to turn to, imo.
So long as they all have the prerequisite of being Satyr i see no problem.
Have initially been portrayed to wield the stuff, with a pretty much warlock mindset. Sadly that bit got homogenised into oblivion, because all of Horde’s problems seem to have a singular answer “Be more like the aliance!”
I’m pretty sure everyone who got sent to Revendreth or the Maw would call some big fat , on that one.
Check MMO.
We already do have people wanting Night Elf Warlocks through the Illidari.
That’s not quite as it was.
As we learned in Suramar the Valewalkers, which are almost Pre-Druids and the Highborne Arcanists worked on creating the first Arcan’dor which created the balance between Arcane and Nature.
Nightborne live in a society where we see that. We actively see Shal’dorei Grove Tenders using arcane magic to heal the plant-life around the Nighthold. It isn’t too far to implement Nightborne Druids.
Then call them grove tenders, but there is more to a Nelf/Tauren druid mind-set than “grove-tending”.
Shadorei made their choice, i.e. the arcane - it’s a bit wishful to see them now as “naturalists”.
That is why I said my hope rests on Metzen, he wouldn’t go down that road. Let’s see how that’ll turn out.
Indeed. I always prefered the Sunfury to the later version of Belves.
Using nature magic doesn’t make you a Druid, you have to be connected to a Wild God, Loa or the Drust.
The first Kaldorei druid was Malfurion Stormrage and he was too busy fighting off demons to teach you anything about druidism, while you walled yourselves and shat your pants in Suramar.
The Shal’dorei are reckless and arrogant, you are also addicted to the Arcane, that keeps you away from following the path of Cenarius.
That’s why your so called “Druids” can’t shapeshift into any animal form.
if we’re going full crazy might as well let orc be paladins … for their a shining example of justice “cough lol cough”
Bit of a late response not often on the story section
Elune feels like she has more of a lunar astral magic (so the moon themed balance druid spells) profile, astral being a mixture of arcane and nature and an actual damage type that some spells use.
I feel like this is somewhat reinforced by the boss fights of Echo of Tyrande which has a mostly arcane damage profile (probably because astral ignores nature and arcane resistances) and Sisters of the Moon which also sees the return of arcane damage as well as void damage and was a major hint at the dark side of the moon/light side of the moon duality that they were gonna lean into in BFA and Shadowlands (but realistically already introduced in WC3 maybe unknowingly through the Wardens ultimate ability, the dark side of the moon seems really core to the theme of vengeance).
So between Lunar Astral for the Bright side of the moon and the Void for the Dark side of the moon (which IIRC had a few hints so isn’t just based on the sister of the moon damage profile) there’s no real way to cram light in there other then to remove the lunar astral aspect and replace it with light entirely, or bastardize it even further into a new profile, either way something would have to break or tear for it to fit
As a class skin thing I would definately think it’s cool, however I wouldn’t do it before that. Sunwalkers came before class skins and while they started with solar energy magic (basically the sun themed balance druid spells) by the time Legion came around class order halls forced their lore to turn them into paladins but Tauren rather then Sunwalkers. If we had the class skins ready at the introduction to make the nelf paladin have a more lunar astral looking magic I would definately be for it though.
Maybe they could even swap over the damage profiles from light to astral without breaking anything, both damage types have 0 existing resistances but maybe thats being too hopeful and asking for too much.
Another issue with associating the light with elune is that now because of this fate of Sunwalkers the Sun is already kind of associated with the Light, it’d be weird to now also associate it with the moon.
Elune is a god damned mess. Some super naaru thing that’s also a titan like being of life. So she is linked to nature, light, void and arcane???
i liked it better when she was the only true goddess in warcraft she seems like she took several downgrades and now is a Aqua (konosuba) level diety :
