Or maybe, just maybe, he meant what he said above and give other races a chance?
Not being upfront rude immediately has its benefits! Like finding out what someone really meant? I know right? I’m passionate about my own choice of races and have a lower form of regard about Night Elves, but I do not actively raise the torch and throw stones if others don’t like what I like.
Am I the only one who didn’t really mind the Night Elves just being more towards the background of things rather on the face of it?
HUMAN POTENTIAL meme aside I didn’t mind them as a supporting role then as the one in front in general. Even so, you normally had them having their own side adventures in the various expansions, such as minor quest hubs in Shadowmoon Valley or Krasarang Wilds.
I like to think I am a Night Elf fan foremost, and I would just prefer them to be like that unless X in question is mainly Night Elven focused.
Also, I would love to see a semi-retcon of the number of forces and civilians (for both sides as well) what died in the WoT xd.
The priestess in the Book was just having a bad dream. Teldrassil isn’t actually burning, she was just reading a children’s lullaby book and fell asleep next to a cosy fire.
I really dm Teldrassil being burnt down, but the loss of civilian life what came with it.
I mean if the numbers are really that high then the Night Elves are just a Military Order and not a nation anymore. When Tyrande goes and says stuff like “we are a dying race” oh please…
I dunno’, I just want to minimize everything that has happened so we can actually move on, touching Teldrassil wouldn’t nearly be as bad if there were barely any civilians left on it compared to numbers up to like 90%.
If you’re not a fan of them you wouldn’t mind, or even care, but if you were, and you found the things they wrote for them amazing,
you’d be gutted to see them so down all the time,
you’d long for them to get better or start moving forward
You’d be excited to see more of them especially when you have to wait so long for so little.
It really is my opinion that blizzard should give the races amazing cool things their fans can love and look forward too or help build cos their is a lot of racial pride, and people are often drawn to the character, set up and style and story of a race. I don’t mean this just for night elves, but for every race, each race getting things based on thier lore and their journey.
Building a race up is important, and people normally choose them based on what they set up for them. I loved everything about the night elves. In particular was the whole elevated stars and moon thing, grand civilziation, great forests, extraordinary arcane and nature magic - i love the magic stuff… but these guys were excellent nad I love purple, silvers, blues - i also like red and gold, but i like the night elf combo.
Sadly wow’s story has a lot of taking away from races and veyr few giving back. As a fan, you want to see them become amazing again, or to their original self, or the best version of themselves.
I feel the game should find time to do an expansion to see the players able to explore that and help make it happen. I reckon players would love this more than a faction and class focus, becuase through race,:
many classes get a lot of lore and
get to feel special,
race is really waht gives a stronger sense of individuality and identity than faction does.
I think it is important to establish a difference between portrayal and them having screen time.
Night Elves should be better than what they are, yes they should. But making them what they are doesn’t mean them being in the picture more. There current portrayal was bad, the Night Warrior is a start to them going back to how they should be but then you have Forsaken Night Elves which halts that in its tracks and for me annoys the hell out of me. Nothing will change of the Night Elves if the writers keep writing them the way they do, giving them more time would just further increase it. It wouldn’t change anything but make people more annoyed.
Ultimately you can’t show everything you want, you are on a timer. But compared to other races the Night Elves in the various expansions didn’t have it bad.
Most content they should be the face of is ones what directly affected them. Such as Azshara and the Naga, The Burning Legion, The Emerald Nightmare (etc…). Beyond that they should be a supporting role to threats like the Lich King and the Scourge, The Mogu/Mantid, The Dark Horde and so on. Them being there isn’t the place.
Like Haiete/Hachak have said, third party media can fill in the gaps of races to establish world building or what is going on in the background etc… The Night Elves should be the face of what is going on, the traditional Horde and original Alliance should be really.
you shouldn’t give up ever. I don’t see you as a hater at all, and i do tend to like most of Tyrande’s comments, even though i don’t agree with everything.
I just learned that poeple aren’t always going to accept my passion, like you probably dn’t accept hers, and people aren’t alwyas going to understand what i’m saying because of hteir passion, like she probably missed you on that one.
If you feel someone has got you wrong, you should say, and hope for the best, if they don’t get it and they say why in a way you can address, and you feel like doing so, then do so. Somtimes it helps, sometimes it doesn’t, but that’s entirely up to you. Remember you don’t HAVE to respond. But understand people who write on these forums depend on others responding to make a discussion worthy topic that theycan share their views and their feeelings.
Thanks a lot for your reply. I decided to ‘give up’ because I felt that the discussion with Tyrandé was unconstructive, and we wouldn’t reach any point we’d agree on anyway. No hard feelings towards Tyrandé, but I don’t care much about these kind of discussions.
I’ve tried explaining my point better to her, but apparently it didn’t help so I’ll leave it at that.
That’s not lore. Making out of them loot painatas is not lore.
Darkspears despite being playable for like 14 years just now received a love, after a big outcry over Vol’Jin’s death.
So if you want I can totally swap places. I’d like to raid nelves for some while too.
I think that is an astute observation. And you’re right. Portrayal isn’t necessarily screen time, and at the current rate, because only a few races get attention, giving too much screen time to one group pisses off the playerbase. this is why.
Potrays,
I am happy with the night elf time tot he rule world in the past, and the larger more numerous races being humans or orcs, - but night elves were portrayed at a particular level with a range of thigns i liked very much… so when they later get portrayed at the fraction of that capability, this is what sucks.
Night elf with only the druid stuff and not hte arcane stuff of htepre-sundering era or hte priest stuff of wc3 and pre-sundering era, is a shadow and incomplete.
night elf with only ruins, never to rebuild their fabled cities or repair their lush forests also sucks.
I don’t need them to rule the world or be the dominating power, but their ability and power is legendary, I expect them to be able to hold off against any of hte new big boys, and beat them when they try to attack or control them - teach them a lesson, because they are supposed to be the oldest lived locals, the most experienced, the ones who advanced the most, and have knoweldge , skills etc that a lost.
It is this i want to see portrayed. i don’t mind if you can’t give me a world with night elves dominating, give me 1 or 2 of their fabled cities, let me see them impossible to take down on their turf because of how they were described and designed.
i don’t need to see them dominate alliance forces, or run their show, in fact i expect to hardly see any night elves there. But if I see one, he should be special, because of the type of being you wrote his race to be.
Sure I expect blood elves to be the main magical force in the world, but in one where shend’ralar, nightborne, Farondis and Moonguard survived with that kinda lore, I expect the few members of that group to be on a different level because the Darnassians and the Thalassians lost most of the knowledge the shen’drlaar, moonguard, Farondis did not, therefore if they’re around, I expect Mordant Evenshade instead of Khadgar opening secret doorways to Azsuna, or decrypting messages in Suramar.
Jaina may have more juice and power, but I expect Thalyssra to be able to outwit her with arcane knowledge Jaina just does not have depsite her powered up by her artifacts.
Do you see what I mean? You are spot on about portrayal. If the story hands the night elves a crushing defeat, because they were out maneouvred – not because they aren’t smar,t but because they were noble and tried to save the dying planet in Silithus, while Sylvanas pulled a dirty smart trick to invade their lands, let it be clear they won because most of hte kaldorei didn’t bring all their abilities and groups to bear. But then show them gaining back in equally spectacular style either what they lost or something of equal and greater value.
my example of this was, restoring their power via the Well of Eternity, Elune and the emerald dream, claiming the broken isles, gathering many of the other night elf groups, then ceasing the lands they lost. they may not get total control, but their power makes up for their lack of numbers and they vigorously defend what htey hvave and hold. this is an example. It’s not a desire to see the night elves overthrow the horde and rule Kalimdor, not at all, they should be able to be shown as matching the sort of capability and power that is written of them in the WC3 manual, in WotA trilogy - a tleast ot fight and win their battles. And if blizzard hasn’t showwn that yet, they should write them victories.
We have seen the blood elves gain a high degree of success and effectiveness since they got their sunwell back and Quel’thalas, – night elves don’t even have the use of their Well of Eternity , and have lost all their lands, they don’t control anything on the broken isles or Kalimdor… now tha’ts just too much.
Screen time:
To solve this, they really need to run racial campaigns where following you race and doing stuff for it, building it, epxanding its lore is a part of every expansion, and goes laognsie the new campaign, people relaly
That’s true, it wasn’t favourable troll lore. If you’re a troll fan, it may be nice to see Zul’Aman, Zul’Gurub, Zul’drak - great famous troll cities and cultures, but all of them being the punch bag must suck a bit.
Not giving enough to the darkspears or another troll group you can show as an example I understand. It’s like my main issue with legion was that all the night elf groups they showed being really cool and powerful were not linked to or joined to the darnassian ones we play.
in fact the darnassian night elves didn’t do anything but look bad in Suramar 7.1, the rest were other night elf groups, most notably the Nightborne who went horde, and the Farondis, who though amazing, are ghosts - we can’t do anything with them as ghosts. The illidari, who seemed to have no interaction with the Darnassians, and the Dreamers who might as well have been a druid community left to its own devices, with earliest association with the Darnassian group being nearly 10,000 years ago. Finally the Moonguard, portrayed so cool as well as Valewalker Farodin, again nothing to do with the Darnassian night elves.
Their one opportunity to really give the Sister hood of elune some much needed lore, with Suramar and the cathedral of Eternal night returning, and they edit all of that replacing it with class lore and more legion stuff - whic we go plenty of in Argus mind you. It sucked to see night elves edited out after the Nighthold, and the Darnassians doing nothing against their most hated enemy. Only to return after the biggest defeat, with no reflections on the huge change all the revelations and that final defeat would have forthem, to instaed now be shown, but as canon fodder showing how victorious and powerful Sylvanas is and how she crushes her enemies - victims, slaughtered, once again - nothing of the type of race originally described in the WC3 manual and portrayed in WotA trlogy.
You see personally, I don’t like when they do that. If you’re going to kill so many, fine (well not fine, you did it, I got emotional as you wanted, you did it for the drama, it worked), don’t go and retcon it later, instead properly make up for it.
Instead, do something amazing of equal magnitude that more than makes up for it. they have a lot of loose end and stuff gong on for night elves not emploeyd. New nubmers could come from Farondis restored, emerald dream worgen night elves returning, Elune restoring a faction of satyrs to Illidari looking night elves, doign the same for Naga etc…
now that would be an exciting development that can actually give nighte lves some serious man power boost, not to mention skilled force. Add the ravencrest undeads coming tot he mix., while the genocie gave us something to cry over, the resotraiton of some powerful allies and groups, like the illidari, farondis, moonguard, Cenarians all committing their lot tot he kaldorei would be kinda awesome.
Don’t retcon them losing their immortality, or trying to force it back by the failed teldrassil attempt, write an ew story where now in their desprate need, with the arcane users in their race fully learning thier lessons, they now tap into the power they had locked away in thier greatest hour of need, and show htem doing cool stuff.
My race Jungle troll, Darkspear specifically is the one I play. And yes, for 14 years we had a collection of cameos. The biggest event - so Darkspear revolution was delivered in very underwhelming way, which pales to 5.1 and 5.2 content, not to mention that ridiculous dialogue added just becuase Alliance fanbase was offended that Vol’Jin dared to be mean to them - they could’ve just remove that idiotic exchange to begin with, but it made both sides look petty at the very least.
I can go on and on, but this is a thread about nelves - again.
I was just pointing out that being made to be purely loot pinatas is not development you’d wish to have.
No it isn’t, no they don’t.
We had Nightelves and related stuff in 3/4 Zones of Legion questing.
We had Nightelven-related stuff in 50+% of Kalimdor Zones since classic.
We had 1 Zone where we had to Quest for Nightelves in TBC.
We even had Nightelven Quests in WotLK.
And don’t forget 2 Leveling Zones in Cataclysm.
The only Addons where we didn’t have at least one Zone with Elves in the Spotlight are Pandaria and WoD.
The only Race that is more pandered to by Blizzard are Humans, and if i see these numbers, i think that may be an illusion…
And most of these are relevant even as a horde player. If i feel annoyed by the whole bombardement with Nightelves, i don’t know how dwarven players must fell, they didn’t get the spotlight since classic until darkirons came along…
No offence, the thread is actually rather complete and well thought, but amongst playable races, and specially after Legion, Night elves are one of the races that has had more spotlight.
That spans across both factions and against some rather important enemy.
You’re wrong nelves had spotlight in MoP. They’re Horde dawnchaser expedition equivalent in Krasarang wilds with infameous “Little patience” scenario. Not to mention small cameo in SoO.
