Nightborne lore, additional sources

It’s horrible, are we now going to hear about Nightborne until the end of days just like with Quel’dorei?

Blizzard isn’t going to suddenly change the alliegane of a race, why bother?

In this instance, Kelibor believes that the Night Elves are the Alliance, forgetting that Humans, High Elves and Draenei are involved and with them, comes the redundancy of the Nightborne - just like the redundancy of the Shen’dralar Highborne.

Horde has something the Alliance likes.

That’s all this comes down to.
If you want to play a Nightborne, you play the Horde. It’s really that simple.

And once again, something that could have been an interesting conversation turns again into “My pixels are better than yours, x is the more mean”. You make me so glad I’m not going on that regularly forum anymore, it feel like the visual representation of a broken record.

To answer OP seriously, the Mimiron’s Library collected as many tidbits of Nightborne lore that could be found ingame, I’ll copy a few interesting one here.

First a tidbit on other elves to appease the crowd:

Night Elf Cuisine

  • Wild rice cakes, which come from northern Kalimdor, are cooked according to a traditional kaldorei recipe.

  • The recipe for the night elves’ signature bread, kaldorei pine nut bread, was passed down by their forebears. It is cooked using ingredients foraged from the forests of Kalimdor and shaped into a leaf to honor Teldrassil, the World Tree.

  • Bean soup is a popular dish among the night elves of Kalimdor.

  • Tyrande Whisperwind enjoys eating deep-fried plantains.

  • Versicolor treats are made and sold only by the night elves of Kalimdor.

  • Malfurion likes to snack on mashed potatoes [[Hearthstone: Innkepeer’s Tavern Cookbook, pg. 71].
    Blood Elf Cuisine

  • Honey bread, which originates in high elven culture, is shaped to resemble the hives of domesticated bees in Eversong Forest.

  • A master chef tasked with feeding blood elf royalty on a budget came up with an alternative recipe to crunchy spider surprise that substitutes crabmeat for spider meat.

  • Bloodberries from Quel’Danas are used to bake bloodberry tart.

'https://warcraft-lore-archives.tumblr.com/tagged/nightborne The nightborne tag for the curious.

Suramar City had a small leatherworking guild, but most of its members were assassinated by former member and Nightfallen Stalriss Dawnrunner. He sought revenge on them for siding with the demons against him

Spellblades, as the name indicates, are those who combine both melee skill and magic into a single form of combat. Spellblade Aluriel, captain of Grand Magistrix Elisande’s guard, was the first Nightborne to take on the rank of spellblade. She is not only adept in the magical schools of fire, frost, and arcane, but she also commands great prowess with a sword, making her both expert mage and warrior. Although it was once popular to specialize exclusively in just magic or weaponry, Aluriel was the first to combine both skills and pave the way for generations of spellblades to come.

Telemancers specialize in teleportation, a form of magic known as telemancy. Although telemancers can teleport and cast portals freely, they prefer to use a system of telemancy beacons to stabilize their portals, making them much safer to travel through. Beacons do this by supplying power for teleportation triangulations, which makes portal calculations much more exact and, consequently, safe. Placing too many beacons, however, has the adverse effect of overloading the telemancy network.

The Nightborne haven’t produced bows in Suramar for centuries [NPC: Silgryn Dialogue]. Victoire suggests that the Nightborne never embraced the bow because they’re such primitive instruments compared to arcane magic [NPC: Victoire Dialogue].

The few Nightborne hunters (known as Nighthuntresses) that do exist are survival hunters, meaning they have abandoned long-range weapons like the bow in favor of close-range combat with melee weapons.

I copied only a few things; I really recommand that blog if you have an interest in lore, as they threat of every subject. The most recent Lore Month was on Kul tiras.

You say that like you are surprised.

The second is a pure disguise to try and get his night elf/nightborne fantasy faction.

He wanted to try and blab that the nightborne should join the Alliance, I told him that, that wouldn’t be possible because it would make the elves redundant, when in comparison to humans, high elves and draenei. Now he wants to split the factions to try and subtley get his night elf/nightborne fantasy.

We all know this won’t happen because the Alliance and Horde need each other for the game to carry on.

What really annoys me it’s that he spams in the whole forum. Wait what is this flag…

That was fantastic. You are my favourite person in this thread. Thank you.

I like him. He’s got more high elf nobility than blood elf ruthlessness in him. I fell in love with him in the Sunwell trilogy comics anyway.

It makes thinks intersting, lots to read, and sometimes i agree, sometimes when people respond there is b/s about it and I’m tired of being nice about it, and call it out for it. They get offended, but they are the first that were being rude and disrespectful, so if that’s how they want to play it, then they shouldn’t be surprised if the filter comes out.

Hun, i did see the Shen’dralar fighting in Stonetalon mountain, and it was their novice students who were fighting in the warfront in Azshara.

We also see them in the War of Thorns though most of them are used for creating portals, a couple did actually go on the offensive in Ashenvale trying to stop the horde before they got killed.

We also see them or their new recruits in the battle for Lordaeron, it is quite obvious in the cinematic. So they are there, whether it is the actual original Shen’dralar or the new highborne they raised (everyone who trains with them becomes highborne - it is one of the conditions of their alliance as explained in wolfheart)

Given the the way blizzard writes atm, this sadly is true, but their fate on the horde is even worse. They have been ruined, have no individuality, they’re just purple blood elves in night elf skins for any relevance they have. They bring no kaldorei lore or culture or involvement to the horde, which was supposed to be their purpose. All blizzard is doing now is just replacing some npcs that originally would have been blood elves with nightborne. There is no difference even though there should be. They are NIGHTBORNE, not blood elves.

Don’t you think this is why the night elf fans have been constantly posting and very angry recently, because they are tired of the alliance only being about humans, and they’re not into humans.

But you are right, if that doesn’t change, the nightborne fate in the alliance would be only marginally better than in the horde.

That is also interpretation, who are you closer too? Your family/friend you’ve known since childhood but have temporarily fallen out with or the new friend you recently met that is inviting you to their parties and gang?

I wouldn’t call it close, not yet anyway. It is one thing to keep open minds, its another thing to keep close. And if she can be open minded about them, she can be open minded about rejoining her actual kin.

That’s a problem, hence why many night elf posts are springing up, fans care about this.

Well that’s an exaggeration, there is alot of exploration of the reunion of the people of Suramar, but surely even you can see it doesn’t end there, and so much more can come of it that enhance each other more than it would the blood elf/nightborne relationship.

You realise that descending from highborne has nothing to do with it. The long vigil kaldorei (highborne with that group too) lost all their cities, knowledge, records, except what each individual would remember in his head.

Furthermore, none of them practiced or used the arcane for 3,000 years - meanwhile the night elves in Eldre’thalas and Suramar never stopped, their city was intact, their records, books, archives, knowledge from the empire that was lost to the others, they had it all, plus they had a city full of people continuing using research.

It is no wonder that the high elves aren’t able to recapture anything close to what the kaldorei empire achieved and why ancient night elven arcana, relics and knowledge is so prised of, because there was a global empire wide level or degree of information. This is why a city university like Eldre’thalas and Suramar being discovered is such a great treasure trove the Reliquary and Kirin’tor are all over themselves for all the knowledge and secrets they hold.

Until they join the alliance, the shen’dralar keep peddling their information for more stories and lore from outsiders, they’re obsessed with knowledge and research. THe nightborne don’t share anything ofc until they’re defeated and now their doors are open.

There is an element of that, true, just like Broken isle ruins look much better than kalimdor ruins. However lore wise, the magic and degree of civilization in the kaldorei empire is said to be the most advanced by any mortal civilization even today, and that includes the high elves.

It doesnt mean Silvermoon isn’t an impressive city, it is, it’s just not like the likes of Suramar or Zin’Azshari or Eldre’thalas in their pristine condition, no where near that level.

THe point is the elven golden age of magic is in the decent past, and while they may one day recover, in fact they have all the expertise, knowledge and power to do so now when you think that the highborne shen’dralar, farondis, and nightborne have emerged, and the Ancient druid trees that were around back then to help build these cities are still about or their descendants retaining all their knowledge are still about and night elf druids are now at the level and knowledge to perform those feats. WIth knowledge available in Eldre’thalas and SUramar to do such. It should be possible to replicate.

Yes, that is true. However you now have to remember that night elves that continued with magic are now back - shen’dralar, farondis and nightborne - these groups can elevate both the darnassians and the blood elves to the level of the kaldorei empire and all their advancements in the 10,000 years since.

However make no mistake, neither the darnassians or the thalassians are at the level of the highborne/nightborne - yet… but they will be soon seeing that they have these guys back.

you’re exaggerating, I was enojoying have this discussion with you, try not to get too emotionally attached, it’s just a game, and if i’m right it’s no big deal, it impacts your life in no way. If i’m wrong, who the hell cares? It does nothing, so I won’t lose sleep over it. I won’t hate you either, unless you insult me an curse me, now that is real, but the contents of what happesn or doesn’t happen, what can be or what should be, what is or what is not in this game universe? it’s not real, none of it.

This is why I told Janeearis in the other post I wasn’t being hostile to her personally, it’s a game, and it was an in character thing, with a measure of embellishment.

It is also why I tell Erevien and Brigante that I really am not actually angry, and remind them that this isn’t personal, not to me.

ANd i actually care if you are personally getting offended, which is why I actually asked Janearis the question in the other topic, because the intention is not for her actual self to feel bullied or insulted or marginalised. It’s not the type of person i am in real life at all. This is a game where we take on different characters and personalities, but because I don’t want people to feel offended or hurt, if my comments or responses are having that effect i care enough to ask an investigate.

I have felt offended by how people have laughed and mocked and bashed either my point of view or dreams, no matter how much evidence or lore i have presented to them, to the point of writing essays they can’t even bother to read the proof I give them, not realising i have sacrificed of my time and effort to actually give them a detailed response, yet they spit in my face by not reading, gloating about not reading it, then going on about their point and my head canon lack of evidence when they haven’t even bothered to look at the evidence.

Not once did they pause to think how I might feel with all this bashing and unkindness, look at the mocking comments they’ve made… they have been personal, not in character, while mine have been in character. Yet I don’t take them as such, when I thought they were playing a game, I in turn responded in kind. When it emerged they were not, it also told me they were actually seriously insulting and being rude to me themselves. But I chose not to be offended and instead apologised if i had caused offense.

Was it reciprocated? No, the mocking continues. But I can take it though. I’m not exactly looking for sympathy and understanding.

That’s irrelevant. These Highborne were able to cast an arcane storm over Ashenvale, teach the humans, enchant their land into an eternal spring and develop in ways that never corrupted their society. They set up a protective barrier that ensured their practices of the arcane were safe which is nothing to be scoffed at, considering the force they were able to hide from was alien and the ancient Eredar bested the Highborne in their skills of sorcery. It’s a huge feat to establish something to block out alien forces. Plus they did much more.

They bested the crazed Highborne of the Eternal Palace in more ways than one.

And it’s now no wonder the night elves lost so much after the war of the ancients, whilst the high elves flourished and developed a true mastery of almost every art, including the arcane, which ensured their survival.

The Highborne of Silvermoon developed and flourished for thousands of years thanks to their mastery of the arcane.

Blizzard haven’t given any inclination that any relatives of the night elves became Nightborne.

Until we have any forms if evidence for this, this is imagination.

It’s hella worse.

Redundant is far worse than being accepted and liked.

Like Grommash Hellscream has an iron eill this guy have an iron headcanon.

Night Elves -> Highborne -> Shen’dralar, Blood Elves, High Elves, Void Elves, San’layn, Nightborne, Naga & Satyr. Just to remind him.

Don’t forget that Nightborne are descendants of ancient Highborne. So are Sin’dorei. Nowadays Kaldorei are mostly (bar Shen’dralar) descendants of ancient Lowborn…

It is MUCH more probable that Shal’dorei have relatives among Sin’dorei than Kaldorei.

Haha, pleasure!

In fairness, Suramar was (is) a City. Highbornes are (were) the noble caste, but you still need a lot more people to make a city works. Citizens, merchants, servants, architects, etc. Those would have been Lowborns as well, and can have family in the Kaldorei part. Though I’m not sure how much random peasants would have travelled across the Empire to have family somewhere else than the region they are.

It depend if your Shal’dorei is a noble in Suramar, or a regular citizen. A regular citizen could have family on both side of the ocean (ancestors loosing their highbornes statut, wedding with someone not noble, etc.), probably a bit more likely among the Kaldorei; a noble is way more likely to have relatives among the Sin/Quel/Ren’dorei.

Absolutely.

Ancient Highborne bloodlines, that extended from Zin’Azshari to Quel’Thalas is far more probable because of the fact that the Elves from Quel’Thalas and Suramar are descended from the Highborne.

Has anyone noticed that Elisande seems to have deliberately been given Night Elf features on her in-game model. Why has she not fully transitioned like the rest?

Originally, nightborne females were fully night elf featured, just skinnier, only males had the upturned ears.

Somewhere near the release build , at the end of beta, they suddenly changed the nightborne female npcs to have those ears. But the older models like Spellblade Aluriel and Elisande, and a few here and there remained unchanged.

war of the ancients > 10k under the dome > legion

Gamescom 2015 has a lot of info not mentioned much anywhere else.

  1. The nightborne believed the War of the Ancients lost (i.e. Tyrande, Malfurion and the other Suramar night elves that left to fight Azshara all perished, but their sacrifice brought them the time to complete and raise the shield presumably because they occupied the invading forces full attention.) And that Azeoth was a wasteland overrun by demons. They believed putting down the shield would cause the city to be overrun

  2. The shield was impenetrable, they were unaware of everything outside, as everyone outside had no clue what was within the shield (I.e. for all they knew it was a wasteland - Moonguard in Suramar comment on not knowing what was underneath the shield, this implies the night elves believed Suramar fully lost till Legion, Maiev goes crazy against the legion and arcane for Suramar’s destruction, she and her brother Jarod are from the city, as are Tyrande , Malfurion and Illidan.

  3. The nightborne ran very low on natural resources like clothes and food, and were starving in what was going to result in death, fearing lowering the shield even more than starvation, they once again turned to the arcane. This is how and why arcwine became a thing, it is why they became skinnier than they once were. It is also why their clothes weapons and armor are pulsing with arcane energy, because the arcane is used to conjure up armour.

  4. It is this chronic use of arcane is why they get so distorted that without arcane energy, they wither. This was final healed by the Valewalker order’ s leader Farodin, using the Arcan’dor a tree made from the fusion of arcane and nature magic - the order was founded and compromised by highborne night elves and primitive pre-druid night elves , (who’d have become full druids after the sundering dering from Malfurions teachings i presume). The order had notuced the problem of addiction arising near the end, and were in a race to solve it before the Queen and arcane nobility were further compromised - they failed to perfect the solution in time to prevent the queen inviting the legion, but work continued after the sundering to solve it. Farodin tried once on a bunch of expelled nightborne, but lacked enough arcane energy to stabikise it, the resulting catastrophe birthed the fal’dorei. He finally succeeded with Thalyssra’s help and Valtrois, managing to feed enough arcane energy to prevent the destabilisation, and so the cure for all night elven arcane addiction is solved by the fruit and understood to be as a result of going out of balance with nature.

This is more obscure lore from gamescom and some of the quests.
