No sound on M1 Mac mini - update, possible workaround

Previously here I’ve written about sound disappearing on WoW Shadowlands on an M1 Mac mini running macOS Monterey , despite audio working fine elsewhere. A system update fixed it initially, although the problem has reoccured since, with no system updates available.

Rebooting the Mac, restarting WoW, deleting WTF/Interface etc. didn’t fix this problem for me. Anyway, there’s an extensive thread about it on the US WoW Mac Tech Support forum; I’m not the only one suffering from this problem.

A temporary workaround which works for some there is to switch to Bluetooth audio, which enables other sound output devices to be selected in-game (i.e. wired headphones, etc). I don’t have Bluetooth speakers, but I do have a USB webcam with a mic, and connecting this also allowed me to select other sound output devices, temporarily fixing the loss of audio. If I disconnect the webcam, all audio is lost.

So, I’ve no idea why this (temporarily) fixes the problem - some weird permission error, perhaps, but it works for me.
