Norse Mythology Names Not Allowed?

I wanted to rename my DPS Shaman to Sinmara but it said it was not available on my realm.
Does that mean somebody else have it or you can’t name a character like that or they have named a NPS to that name?

The meaning of this name is: In Norse mythology,Sinmara is a female figure or jötunn usually considered a consort to the fiery jötunn, the lord of. Sinmara is attested solely in the poem.Fjölsvinnsmál, where she is mentioned alongside Surtr in one (emended) stanza, and described as keeper of the legendary weapon Lævateinn in a later passage. Assorted theories have been proposed about the etymology of her name, and her connection with other figures in Norse mythology.

Sounds like someone else beat you to the name, most names especially on high pop servers are often taken.

You could do a search, is the armoury thing still around?
If not, just go to your postbox and put the name in.
If you see the name (and realm) then you know its already gone.

Idk your desired realm, but from a quick search there is well above 25 chars with this name on both EU and US realms, so chances are high enough, its taken.

Copy-paste some of these symbols and you can create a character with similar name, like Sínmara for example. With “í”. Your choise.

Putting things such as í, ì, î and similar symbols in your name regularly gets you kicked, frowned upon and discriminated against.

There was a person whose character name was “Øwlðspîçë” in a guild once, who pretty much got bullied for their name.

I wouldn’t recommend. It also looks quite stupid, if you ask me.

If your desired name is already taken, simply choose a different one.

Been doing it for many years… they can frown all they like. In 13 years I haven’t been kicked for a name - not even once.

One alt code won’t hurt… just don’t go full disco.

Only by idiots. And if someone does do any of what you suggested or gets upset about someone using a special I or e in their name.

Says more about them than the character’s name they are crying about.

My fave site go do a good old cut and paste!

There’s multiple Sinmaras, none on Silvermoon, though. Unless they are hiding their profiles. But the name itself isn’t banned.

Isnt this racist :stuck_out_tongue: Most of the symbols are normal letters. My “ø” is a Danish/Norwegian o.

But yeah… some of the names looks really ugly if you abuse the use of these symbols like the guy from your guild.

Nah… I prefer mine :stuck_out_tongue:
You see all the stuff in one place without scrolling down.

I’ve seen people get kicked from LFG for things such as “stupid name” due to them having alt codes in their name.

That being said, I’ve also seen people get kicked for no reason from LFG dungeons, so obviously it’s just something that sometimes happens due to people in LFG being stupid.

It gets bothersome when sending mail to people who aren’t in your guild or similar. I understand why people dislike names with characters that are difficult to write. I have a guildmate who uses both í and ì in their name and said guildmate didn’t receive any mail when I was sending around gold that I’ve transferred through a guildbank transfer from another server. He had to wait until I could invite him to our group, rather than just making it easy for me.

There’s reasons to dislike special characters and alt codes. One surely isn’t as bad as the name I’ve copy pasted before, but it can be quite bothersome.

It’s not. Racist is discriminating based on nationality or skin colour. This is discriminating based on the name they’ve chose to give themselves in an online game. I’d discriminate if people gave themselves WW2 german generals names. That doesn’t mean I’m racist against germans.

I’m sure people in danish or norwegian guilds won’t mind. Similar to how germans wouldn’t mind “ä, ö, ü or ß”. However if you’re playing on an english server, people might complain.

My nickname, here, Thýri, is mispelled. The correct spelling is Þýri. This is an old norse name which is a variant of the name Þórví, derived from the aesir (norse god) Þórr and the word ví, meaning “holy”.

Thank you for saying old norse culture look quite stupid. I didn’t ask you.

I dont see any danish/norwegian servers in this game
The english realms are actually EU realms for all EU nations.

But it’s not a sound in this case, it’s just a name

I know it’s meant to be an S

Yup, Þórr, or specifically Þ looks quite stupid. I mean it makes a great emoticon :Þ looks much better than using a P as tongue, but outside of that, it looks stupid in my opinion.

That being said, I love norse mythology, I just find the characters bothersome and stupid to use, especially in a game that’s international. I also wouldn’t name my character “Übergröße” even though it’s a german word.

I’m sorry for hurting your feelings with my opinion, I won’t change it because your feelings are hurt though. Again sorry. Don’t take it too hard.

Yup, kind of sad for smaller countries, but I’m sure there’s danish and norwegian guilds. I mean finland doesn’t exist, yet paragon was a thing until the end of WoD.

There’s obviously ways how to mail or whisper them. That being said, it’s also more work to mail or whisper them. Making a very simple process more bothersome is kind of rude, imo. Thankfully I don’t have issues with writing most special characters, as my keyboard allows me to write things such as í, î or öäüß without any issues, but if you fill your name with them, especially with very similar looking ones? Before the option of “copy character name” existed, it not only made mailing and whispering, but also writing raidnotes as well as weak auras much more difficult.
