So this thought just crossed my mind whilst on the loo, do you think PTR should be closed? Maybe with NDAs?
All of the content that comes out you have guides to follow before they go live, removing the adventure, mystery and exploring even reading quest text is pretty much obsolete; It’s very bread crummy …
Pick up quest → look at map and goto pin → return → completed.
Unfortunately, leaks would happen no matter what they say/do.
The game has turned into a theme park ride, where you’re guided through everything, as a lot of players these days do not have the patience to read a quest log to find out which direction they need to head towards & find landmarks.
It’s why I’ve never replayed classic, as the original WoW has so many great memories, that I do not want to ruin them with the updated classic with the modern twist on everything.
Can’t you just go in blind? Often videos and Wowhead articles are very clear in what the content is about… Don’t read or watch it?
Just because the quest shows you the direction, you can still read the quest to understand the story? Back then we also had QuestHelper addon, that had pins to where your quest were.
That is why I never played the betas, even though I had access. I didn’t want to spoil the first time experience, and I never rush through content, like many people did when TWW was released. I did every single zone, every single quest the first time around.
I don’t really watch YouTube videos of WoW content, unless it’s something I’m wanting to find more information on for example. I don’t watch WoW streamers as they’re all pretty boring (apart from the race to world firsts, as they can sometimes be entertaining to watch).
Wowhead is only ever used to read up on patch notes or if a quest is broken and it can’t be completed unless you do seventeen different unrelated tasks to get it working >_<
Yes you could just not but right now it’s like playing hogwarts, it’s just so hand holdy and yes I’ll say it when quest text is not clear and you have to go “south east” to find your objective you would usually stumble across other things
It’s been like this for many many years unfortunately. The developers catered the game towards instant gratification.
But I only just today found out about the 10.1.5 secret unlock of Naxx, Zul’Gurub and Scholomance. So sometimes there are things there to do and thankfully not instant gratification.
Yes they are out there but that’s only after you’ve blasted through the MSQ; following your golden snitch to victory. I’ll say it back in classic were it took awhile to level and it threaded you through new zones was the tip of the iceberg. Then days are dead and best left in memory.
I still remember how long it took me to get to max level in original WoW, then in TBC and WoLTK. Then after that, things became far too quick in terms of getting things done.
All I read in wowhead are class and dungeon tuning things. Stories and dialogues I dont look at. In the PTRs I only participate in dungeon ones. Go in, kill stuff, go out. And I have addons that dissable floating heads and dialogs.
Then when the expansion/patch rolls in I do all the quests first. ONCE. But meticulously. Every side quest and explore every cranny. THEN after that I join the rat race of sitting in Donorgal doing dungeons.
Your judgement is valid. I played Classic. I partied with people. And almost every one of them had Questie addon installed (which adds arrows for quests).
But the game has just integrated what people back then used addons for?
Only difference is, now it’s so accessible to look things up, rather than try out or read…
But are you even reading the quests now? In your OP it doesn’t sound like it? So for me, it really just sounds like you’re complaining that you yourself look up guides and that somehow is the games fault?
That would be like me reading the plot of movies beforehand and say there were no mystery of going to the cinema anymore
Yeah, I remember when Thottbot became the norm for a lot of people.
I think by the time I got around to using it, I had already leveled my first character, which took a few months to get to max level. I think I used on the 2nd time around as I had forgotten a lot of the quest locations xD
Nobody is stopping you going in blind, I’d rather them have well tested content with real feedback than to try to keep things a secret. If people want to look up guides to save themselves time, that’s alright.
People on the competitive end of the game don’t care about such stuff anyway, they get enjoyment from competing and challenging themselves, not from mystery and exploration.
In fairness though, the game in many parts does appear designed around the assumption that you do.
Trying to do the Celebration secrets questline without having a look at the interwebs once in a while? Good luck!
Even down to the super basic stuff. I mean, Metzen basically walked out on stage at Blizzcon and said buckle up, there be spoilers, and then proceeded to reveal the plotline for the next 5 years!
Warcraft direct next week will likely involve spoiling the coming adventure in patch 11.1, because revealing what’s going to happen is how Blizzard advertises the game. And that does spoil the adventure of playing the game itself.
And it’s really hard to be engaged in WoW and play the game and at the same time avoid Blizzard’s own major headlines. I mean, you’re going to get that in your face whether you want it or not.
