Inbefore they dip into Heartstone canon and make Bwonsamdi’s boss Xatma, the Plague Lord of Death, who in HS is both described and describes himself as basically the death itself and more powerful than the Lich King etc.
As much as I enjoy Hearthstone lore dripping over into WarCraft proper, let’s be honest: It doesn’t matter who Bwonsamdi’s boss is.
If it’s a brand new character, a character established in Hearthstone or earlier WarCraft titles, or it turns out that it’s Amon and this is setting up for the final crossover with StarCraft, it’s still going to be a disappointing “That’s it? Just X?” as we inevitably beat them up for epic drops.
It’s basically down to Blizzard’s failure to create meaningful opponents besides their OG villains.
Raid bosses could just be named Raidboss#78768 by now since they’re not interest in creating new villains.
As I said before, if Blizzard doesn’t care, how can they possibly expect us to? They don’t build them up through written stories anymore. The last time they tried was in WoD for Iskar and Imperator Mar’gok and that was quite nice.
Otherwise the best you can hope of a villain build up is a Cartoonish one like they did for Xavius and finish them off as final raid bosses. Or reuse old allies and turn them villain only to “gasp!” they were in fact MCed or misguided (Effing Grommash) or had good intentions from the beginning.
Does anyone here remember G’huun? Or those guys in the 3 boss raid crucible of storm? No? How about Argus? Nobody?
I love Gul’dan for his Gul’dan-y-ness but he’s not exactly an intricately plotted, complexly characterized villain. That’s the way I like him, of course. 100% bastard.
