Same. I started at the same difficulty on DE as I did on 2016 and, by about level 3? Had to crank it all the way down to easiest for it to be manageable. Not easy to play, manageable.

Being built around a speedrunner entirely checks out, and marries up with design choices I hate; stop designing just around the min maxers, the end gamers, the gaming 1%, allow for the fact that other people play your damn games and that them being ‘casual’ is no bad thing and is still an entirely valid way to play!

Games are for fun, not a damn job or mastery skill…

I’m currently playing on Hurt Me Plenty.

And I’m sorely tempted to drop it down to the easiest difficulty. I keep burning through the extra lives. I had 12 extra lives at one point… and then I burned through 6 of them in one combat arena.

Again, game’s not bad. But I don’t feel like I’m being fairly challenged. Feels like I’m being told I’m too old to play

I like to play Doom, all of them prior to Eternal, as methodically as possible. I like to find every secret, I like to know I’ve killed every monster, and have a nice stockpile of ammunition for the guns I like to use ( Mainly the Super Shotgun if I’m being honest, a universally satisfying weapon in Doom ).

Same man, gotta go for 100% everything where possible.

I can’t play like that in Eternal. I have to keep switching weapons, have to keep jumping around like a lunatic gibbon, have to keep chainsawing, flame belching, ice blasting( honestly worthless without it’s upgrades! ), meat hooking…

Didn’t bother me personally tbh, but I think this is exactly why I like eternal, because it demands a lot. Nightmare for me was really fun for me because of that. I get it’s not everyone’s cup of tea though.

I enjoy boomer shooters far too much. I still boot up Quake 2 every now and then to blast Strogg. Prodeus is like the perfect pacing for me. It has the sudden bursts of intensity of classic Doom/Doom 2016.

Also I liked Quake 4 and I don’t care what anyone says. Narrative focused Quake is as valid as iD software’s white powder fuelled fever dream Quake. ( Seriously I can’t mention the drug’s name? What the hell kind of word policing is this )

Again I need to stress i don’t think Eternal is bad. I’m bad at it. I’m fully aware I’m bad at it, and the style of gameplay it promotes feels so weird for me. I’m not a speed runner kind of player. I’m the methodical kind of player.

I know I should just play more of it to get into the groove. Maybe I’ll end up becoming an Eternal master one day but right now, I’m struggling.

Nearing the end of Final Fantasy 2, I’ve got two more dungeons left and am basically in the end game but I have this horrible sinking feeling that I’m not going to make the finish line.

The really dumb system for levelling up magic has left me with pretty low level black magic which likely means if I run up to any more bosses that are only weak to one type of magic, I’m going to have a bad time.

I just want to finish it and get to 3 where the job system, which is far more elegant and a natural evolution of this kicks in.

As someone whose hayday was Halo 3 and Reach completed on Legendary (100% Reach until they added more, multiplayer only achievements, bah…) and CoD4 multiplayer a lot… I can’t help but resent feeling like Im too old/out of practice for shooters :<
