So. Hereâs a linguistic exercise.
Thanks to this wonderful masterpiece of flyover lore, Exploring Kalimdor, we know that Iranaâethil (the Darnassian name for the Scarab Wall) means âShield Against the Shadowâ.
We also know that Andeâthoras-ethil means âMay your troubles be diminished.â
I dare you to give a definition for the word ethil that makes both of these translations make sense.
Just a cursory glance at the Darnassian vocabulary we have reveals that Blizzard isnât just making stuff up, theyâre making stuff up with no rhyme or reason. If they ever do hire a professional linguist to make Darnassian an actual conlang, I really, really donât envy the monumental task that would await them: making these patchwork translations, and the whole bunch of untranslated toponyms, retroactively make sense.
PvP guys, is there a reason to upgrade honor/conquest gear if I already have a PvE item for that slot beyond having a ton of honor?
Ethil=Can mean both âtroublesâ and âshadowâ.
Troubles is the more literal form, Shadow is the more poetic/fanciful. Shield Against The Shadow is clearly a poetic name - the qiraji arenât particularly affiliated with shadows/darkness in any way, wheras âMay your troubles be diminishedâ looks like a polite affirmation and therefore is probably the more literal reading.
We talking about the guy who wanted to be shrunk and go inside peopleâs boots?
I applaud your effort (sincerely).
But itâs probably false because in Darnassian compound words, the defining word is typically the last, as evidenced by the various -dorei and -drassil words as well as Elunâdris. Itâs a rare case of consistency from Blizzard. So Iranaâethil should be analyzed as something like Shadow-shield, with ethil meaning shield.
uhhhh
I feel like Iâm missing something here because what
Elly made ethil into trouble/shadows, I present to you: ethil as shield
If you translate it as âmay you be shielded from your troublesâ with âshieldâ not meaning â100% protectedâ you could make it work
Given that Bandu Thoribas means âprepare to fightâ I can see âthorasâ meaning trouble or a battle and ethil meaning shield
So, literally could be âmay you have a shield for your battlesâ
Blizzard does have a bible for their various languages, which is why they have a lot of untranslated phrases for their NPCs that usually can be roughly back-translated from the ones we know about - even for more esoteric languages like Shathâyar
Unrelated, are there any roll20 gamers in these forums? Iâm having a nightmare figuring out a module I bought for my streamed game and am having trouble finding help for it (roll20âs help site is worthless)
UhâŠ
Whereâs your face?

Thereâs a good Gideon Emery voice file someone got him to make about the dude floating around somewhere. Every time i remember it exists i smile a little.
not unless you need a pve item level boost. it has no bearing on pvp itself
But are you Cage or Travolta? And whoâs the other one?

why do nut mixes have peanuts - the worst nut - in them
theyâre not even nuts
Crystalline Conflict got me looking like generic Final Fantasy box art and I donât know if the damage to my psyche was worth it or not.
The trading post now works and the transmogs are nice, but sadly the bandolier items, while undeniably cool, resolve clipping issues with back items like shields and 2h weapons by hiding them - which is a real shame.
Gonna have to stick with my tuskarr backpack
