Pet peeves: The return (Part 4)

Be happy when a celeb boosts your cause, roll your eyes at celebs who have bad takes and don’t support celebs who do horrible things (but also don’t harass, especially not based on rumours)

And don’t read yellow press.

Don’t make it more complicated than it needs to be. That’s just a human in front of a camera/microphone.

Reframing it as being “engaged” in Johnny Depp and the stories that played across the news rather than the online zerg mindlessly championing causes/people without applying any critical thinking isn’t something I’m especially interested in engaging with.

It’s also extremely clear that much of the support he gained was from a misogynistic counter-culture looking to own the #MeToo movement. He was (is?) a drug-addicted abuser who doesn’t deserve redemption — that his ex-partner was equally terrible, if not worse, shouldn’t change that.

That would of course be up to who you ask. It isn’t an universal truth.

The court case was about defamation, not who was more abusive or not. Ultimately both were really crappy people towards eachother and neither was very well-behaved.

It became a big fixation because of three things. 1) People like/liked his characters(particularly jack Sparrow). 2) His legal team focused on painting her as unreliable and untrustful. 3) Women have a massive uphill battle in these cases anyway.

A majority of times when a public famous man is accused by an ex-wife or girlfriend of having behaved less than decently, they are more often than not given alot of emotional support and protection, where as the woman is immediately labelled as evil for wanting to ruin his career and often end up with a huge amount of threats and abuse.

It is though, because you have no actual connection to the person. They don’t know who you are or that you even exist more often than not.

Same as when a particular taurenposter clamours for my attention. Sorry hon, the distance is too great you for to ascend that peak.

Going to but in here with a gentle: Neither of these are arguments towards Depp being one thing or another aside from struggling with addiction. Addiction not being an issue of character and also not meaning you’re a bad person.
It’s a health concern. Nothing more.

I live in Nottingham which is close to Games Workshop’s headquarters - Henry Cavill visits there to play Warhammer occasionally and my friends who have come across him have spoken volumes about how incredibly polite and patient he is, going out of his way to engage with people who are, if we’re being honest, bothering him while he tries to engage in a hobby.

I’m willing to keep my distance from full stan because of the allegations made but apart from extremely spurious sources all I’ve heard is ‘person who knows the source material extremely well occasionally causes resistance or demands change when the adaption deviates’ which is also true of many actors who are also big fans, like Jenny Ortega on Wednesday who would straight-up refuse to say lines she felt were out of character for Wednesday Addams to say

Addiction doesn’t make you a bad person, but you’re equally not absolved from the consequences of your actions while under the influence. It adds context to the situation – especially when Amber Heard was depicted as an alcoholic, which in turn received a very different response to Depp’s addiction problems.

Ah, but you see, the difference here is:

Woman drinking=Slobby, irresponsible, bad.
Man snorting powder and taking pills=Lost his way, just a bit eccentric. Needs emotional support.

Therein lies the issue. If these things weren’t represented so differently from each other, it wouldn’t be worth mentioning in the same way.

@Rockspire. I’ll take your word for it, my point was only that Cavill isn’t unambiguously nice gamer man that we should uncritically revere. One thing (being polite+nice at his Games Workshop) doesn’t mean that he cannot be toxic under other circumstances.

His legal team(and fans) fully committed to painting her as this horrendous, untrustworthy creature of a being. It is strange that a court case about defamation ended up focusing so much on the character of the individuals involved instead of whether or not the alleged crime itself happened or not.

Most of the hearings had nothing to do with the actual defamation charges or events, it was just a lengthy “She is so horrible, this is what she did” which should have been dismissed immediately. Not because of if it was true or not, but it also had nothing to do with the case.

Both are/were terrible people, but it should have been done right.

I’ve ordered a Rayearth Spirit of Fire which apparently releases in April, maybe then I’ll be able to bundle more than one thing for shipping together >:(

Waiting for the season pass to go on sale. #SaleGamer

But I heard it’s good and some of the screenshots make me like Ulbrig. Seems to have some real himbo bear energy to him.

That particular trial was so much of an abortion of justice that anyone who comes out of it stanning Depp still either didn’t follow the trial at all or has their brain so thoroughly filled with manosphere worms that nothing remains

He smashes through the roof of the tavern in gryphon form to introduce himself and when you say the front door was open he says ‘oh, yeah, probably should have thought of that but I wanted to take the direct route’

absolute moron, love him

Kronk vibes.

As somebody with an addictive personality-- getting off alcohol can be an absolute uphill struggle and I’ve only been drinking constantly for months.

I sympathise with anybody who has been on that or anything else for longer, its not easy to come off.

I should clarify that I’ve played through most of it and I think he’s quite fun. There’s a particular moment that I enjoyed:

Minor WotR spoiler, doesn't talk about any new plot points.

When Arueshalae deceives you into helping her at Greengates and the other companions either forgive her or are extremely suspicious of her motives, Ulbrig’s response is to basically shrug and say “she’s a boglin and boglins lie by nature, is it really her fault that we believed her?”

I really don’t care about the response either of them got from the social media hordes. I’m just sick and tired of addiction being treated as a character defect that automatically means you’re the abuser no matter what.

All I got from that mess was:
Neither the reaction of the public Depp got when Heard first came out with her alligation, nor the reaction Heard got when Depp defended himself was appropriate behaviour.
And:
People don’t know how or what is happening in courts. And they really don’t care to listen to anyone explaining it who does know.

My grandma only got away from it once she had to move into a care home over other health concerns. Hugs to you

he right tho :crown:

That’s fair + valid and I probably should have been more conscious about what I was implying, regardless of whether it was my intention or not.

There’s a reason I don’t do drugs, I can become quickly addicted and while the addiction can just drop off on its own, what damage would i have done to myself before then?

Best to just not start them.

As for alcohol-- i wish the off switch would engage because I’m on the strugglebus otherwise.
