Don’t think anyone reasonable will begrudge you that.
I like to cannibalise stuff that doesn’t really fit in for parts and discard all the unfun things for fan content making. What are people going to do other than cry in easily deletable comments?
If you’re looking for laid back Tolkien fans there’s apparently an island of them on tumblr.
Lintian isn’t Luthien! They’re actually pretty different personality-wise, the only things they have in common is that they’re both wood elves with parental issues and a fondness for blue dresses.
Lintian can’t sing or dance to save her life, and Luthien probably isn’t interested in linguistics or cipher theory, or, for that matter, bitterly criticizing Doriath’s isolationism and xenophobia!
There definitely seem to be Hollywood names who are just genuinely good people, but it’s impossible to know without being a fly on the wall of their personal lives.
I just try to reflect on the good they bring into the public sphere, like Pedro Pascal being a staunch queer/trans ally. Is he unambiguously a good person? I don’t know and probably never will, but I appreciate how he chooses to use his newfound influence.
The internet’s tendency for fixating on certain (typically male) celebrities has always been strange. It’s like playing with the new, shiny toy, then consigning them to a dusty shelf when the online community collectively loses interest or they’re shown to be far from the perfect exemplar of humanity that people whipped themselves up into a frenzy of believing.
Terry Crews’ pro-China thing on Instagram a few years back is a good example. Everyone loved Terry before then, but the moment he did something that went against public morality consensus, he was no longer Reddit’s darling.
Somehow, Johnny Depp managed to become the internet’s darling by being in a mutually abusive, drug-fuelled relationship that played itself out across our headlines, all because his team was more effective at controlling the narrative than his ex.
I think Celebrity Culture and the whole… whatever that society has going on with men/gender roles and being Generally Bad with role models, do go quite hand in hand.
The whole ‘putting celebrities on pedastals’ thing sure needs to go, too.
I may be a grilling boomer but the most I’ve seen of it is some alleged Gamer attitude and showrunners who didn’t care about the books being annoyed at him for being a purist fan.
Not all because; partly because. Also because he is a generally likeable person whereas she isn’t. Also because the gravity of her abuse was proven to be greater. Also because everybody loves a redemption story - and the only reason it became a redemption story was because of the internet’s insistence on crucifying him in a hilarious spin on the same process you’re talking about - fixating on the gender part of the issue.
It’s not very strange to be engaged with the life of a public figure that has been present in your life since you were a child, I don’t think.
They have a good showing in the Wulfric novel [a norscan champion who the Chaos Gods gave the Gift Of Tongues to, which is the ability to speak every language but specifically to perfectly insult them and goad them into a fight].
Example, which Wulfric spoke in absolute perfect dwarven:
“Face me if you dare, stunted whelp, or do you lack even an Elven maid’s courage? I thought the Sons of Grungni were great warriors, but perhaps you are no true Dwarf. Indeed, maybe you are instead some breed of bearded goblin, though in truth, I have seen a finer beard on a Troll’s back-side.”
