It’s in the phrase.
People who are on your side, but aren’t companions.
So for example, you’re in a fight helping a group of people fight some enemies. They’ll be in combat highlighted with yellow. They can get damaged by your AoE abilities and turn against you, especially after combat when they run around to get to their usual place.

I wouldn’t view them that way.
Some are important and need saving.
Some are important for quests and some are quest givers. Especially when you’re in the process of turning a quest in. Oops, you’ve aggro-d them.

It is objectively very silly but if you can get past that and get involved anyway it is incredible fun
Trickster gets stealth/disguise spells as Elly mentioned. Light domain gets fire and light spells - including Fireball and Wall of Fire. The light spells are pretty weak (Daylight continues to disappoint by lying and not being actual daylight) but the fire spells are very good
This one big hunter demon boss really threw down a mine field, ran into the middle of them, and turned invisible. I assume the AI hoped my melee would run in and try to find him.
Instead I targeted the mines with double charge Eldritch Blast and they all went off in a chain, killing the boss

ANYWAY, I just realised Summon Elementals are like, at least until long rest permanent (tho it doesn’t even say that? do i have a cute lil elemental boi with me forever?), so now I feel really silly not having used them beforehand lmao.
Especially when I didn’t expect them to have 120+ hp!!

If you have the Ogre Bell, then that’s one way! And later you can just accidentally kill them for a nice ‘set your intelligence to 17’ headgear. :3
