Good vibes sent!
I find HFY quite cool a lot of the time, some of the stories are quite funny or interesting. They can also be poignant:

My personal favourite
Gods, I wish.
Okay but the side quest to escort a dog across Junon has a soundtrack that has no business going as hard as it does.
It keeps giving me songs but âsung by Space Marinesâ or retelling of 40k lore, all with garbo A.I image stuff.
Instantly gets a âdo not reccomend thisâ. I do not wish to see your Trash, thank you
In better news; RT refund going onto Steam, will pick up some other games of less dubious studios \o/
Yeah, big L on their part and theyâre receiving some heat for it on socials - particularly from the artists they would likely want to work with for the actual art they want to end up with after generating âconcept artâ from AI slop.
There may be a world where LLM and such can be used to cut out the busywork for artists in an ethical manner - Adobe for example has a generative art module which is fed exclusively on works they have the rights to - but right now itâs horribly toxic and a terrible idea
I hope they go back on it because the actual things they make are some of the best in the business
I had a video autoplay the other day. I left my PC for a few minutes, came back only to hear the words
âYou make being gay your entire personality.â
Yeah I wasnât happy with hearing that boring line from some snarky commentarybro type whoâs entire personality is âIâm offensive but youâre the problem if you get offended.â
Algorithmâs definitely slanted. I search for game content and a few scrolls down is a certain political partyâs fox news-y propaganda channel agitating against minorities.
HFY as a trope is a funny subversion on the âscary aliensâ trope. Itâs fun to imagine yourself being the scary apex predator and the rest of the universe weaker. It also loses the novelty pretty quickly.
Reddit stories are also really obnoxious as many of them are long series and not one-shots. Itâs one of my pet peeves with r/nosleep, everyone just wants a follow-up and you end up with boring stories. I just donât even bother reading anything that is a series, especially the newer stories (unless theyâre really highly rated I guess, wonder why the âI Saw A Face Today (part 350)â stories have 10 upvotes huh).
I saw it happening with HFY as well, and unfortunately the very first stories were the most interesting and others mostly copy the themes anyway. All the aliens have names of some random Klaxxi mob in WoW anyway.
With No Sleep in particular, many of those stories are also filler posts/episodes. And more than once, theyâve also deliberately ended on cliff-hangers with Patreon links to buy the rest of the story.
Both No Sleep and âShort scary horror storiesâ also suffer from the good old creepypasta issue of overdoing it. When the title is something like âMy dead grandma is back and bleeding and screaming that god isnât realâ it feels like someone is trying way too hard.
The few HFY stories Iâve read all came across as a self-gratifying circle jerk and I didnât care for it at all. They all followed largely the same formula about how actually humans are super scary you donât even know bro theyâre so brutal bro donât frick with humans bro
It has the âtry that in a small townâ small energy
I much prefer the âHFYâ stories where Humans are these chaotic but ultimately affable forces of nature on the galactic scene. Like big, lanky St Bernards or Labradors, often with Australian accents.
The stories where the exploration or science team is stuck and resigned to passing away on some inhospitable planet-lette, until they hear Humans and realise everything will Be Ok. I like those ones.
misread this as Everything Will Be Ork
WAAAAAAGH
Crab evolution but Orks.
Humans as Orks against the likes of Space Pirates or hostile wildlife is ok too
Iâve seen several economic migrants bleat on about âthe bad economic migrantsâ.
dunno, Iâm a lot more happy with the type that pays taxesâŚ
Everything will be ogre.

yeeeee
A lot of HFY is absolutely written by the âpurge xenoâ, Warhammer 40K community. I ignore those ones in favour of the stories that focus on the tropes I like (thereâs a particularly good one about aliens being bewildered by human warzone aiders sobbing over non-human wounded).
Iâve only read two tiny bits of HFY fiction
one was mostly science
the other was by someone discovering new areas for their ⌠enthusiastic liking of monsters.
