eso made this worse. because its set 1000 years before Arena, the earliest point of the single player games aside from Redguard, the cultures come off as being more advanced and fleshed out than they are around the times of oblivion or skyrim.
argonian royal court? my brother in sithis argonians already went through a cultural high, stagnation and now are content to live in reed huts, what royal court
Finally rode my bike again after four years of not using it ( after i had my first surgery wound in 2020), it’s true what they say. You never forget how to.
It was mosty by necessity I used it , because my car’s battery went dead ( thank god we got a recharger).
I enjoyed Mat’s story as he stumbled from one incident into another and the slow realisation that for good or ill, he has supernatural luck on his side, and he ends up being in the right place at the right time. Is the source of that luck coming from the Dark One? We shall see. He’s a reluctant hero who thinks himself a rogue and a scoundrel, but can’t help getting involved and helping those in need even if it’s slowly losing him his street credit.
The Aiel. They were an interesting recurring cast, and every time they showed up, some frankly badass stuff was going to go down. Do you like to dance, Perrin Aybara? It feels like they’re combining the characters of Gaul and Aviendha into one in the show.
Everything with Lan and Moiraine. The way she can silence people with a withering glare is
I like Be’lal’s and Gaebriel’s presence. It could be the way Rosamund Pike narrated their voices that added gravity to it, but the scene with Mat meeting Morgase and Gaebriel, and realising who Gaebriel was? Intense. I don’t know at this point in time which Forsaken is Gaebriel’s true identity but I’m pretty sure he has Morgase under Compulsion based on the hints presented. The way he puts his hand on her shoulder, and her mood changed, or the way the Guard Captain cryptically hinted how he’s loyal to Morgase when asked if he serves Morgase and Gaebriel.
The things I felt could have used some improvement:
For a book titled The Dragon Reborn, Rand was barely in it. One part of our cast is on his trail and we see the peculiar side effects his presence has on the world around him and all the supernatural events he leaves in his wake. While an interesting idea, I feel like the book is named rather wrongly, as he only appears in the end.
Egwene, Nynaeve and Elayne getting captured again. This time they get captured twice in the same book. It feels so far like all they do is get captured and rescued on repeat, because Robert Jordan didn’t know (at this point in the series) what to do with three super powerful future Aes Sedai.
Perrin is still a wet noodle of a main cast character, and his entire arc is worrying about women, the most recent of his fixation being Faile. His role in the finale trying to rescue Faile from the trap that was intended for Moiraine felt tacked on at the last minute.
Be’lal’s death came super abruptly and out of left field. I had to rewind back and go through the scene again to understand if he actually died there and then. For all the setup he had, his death was disappointing.
Is Ba’alzamon = Ishamael? The first three books are really inconsistent about it, with sometimes Ba’alzamon being the Dark One himself, and then sometimes it’s Ishamael. In the show, they conclusively say that it’s Ishamael who’s mistaken for the Dark One. The one scene with Moiraine at the end talking about how the Dark One wouldn’t have left behind a human corpse if it was truly him makes me lean towards Ba’alzamon = Ishamael possessed by the Dark One as an avatar of sorts.
Thom Merrilin doesn’t come across as the super spy he’s implied to be. I know he’s a good actor but his “Grumpy man in a magical world who’s constantly surprised by the existence of magic” bit is getting old.
All in all, I enjoyed it. I’m told the first 3-4 books are rough and go through a lot of growing pains, and it shows. I’m starting to understand the “Yes, but…” reaction people had when I asked if I should get into the books.
I would love to explain a few things seeing as I’ve read through those books ages ago ( though even after doing so, some things still remain unexplained), but I’m also a little scared I’ll accidentally spoil something again, which I really do not want to do to you
Try in the least spoiler way possible, if you can. As long as it doesn’t skirt on any major spoiler, I don’t mind too much — I’ve accidentally spoiled some things peeping at the wiki and the opening paragraph goes “AND THEN THIS CHARACTER BECAME THE [TITLE].”
— We’re ready to begin an assault on Mount Hyjal, Lord Archimonde. How would you like your troops deployed?
— I want you to attack in small groups. Send in our weakest minions first, then progressively stronger ones. In between the attacks, let the enemies rest and regroup. The strongest heroes will stay here with me until everyone else is dead, at which point they will join the assault with our elite troops.
— But, Lord Archimonde… Wouldn’t it make sense to send our strongest minions first, and all at once, before the enemies get the chance to build up their defenses?
— Are you questioning my orders, general?
— …No. Not at all. It will be done as you ordered.
— And remember, whenever you take down a base of theirs, move everything to its place and start with the weak minions again.
— …As you wish, Lord Archimonde. (leaves)
— (grabs popcorn) Well, that will take care of entertainment for the next hour or so, before I come myself and effortlessly stomp them all out. What’s the worst that can happen in between?
I can try, also… seeing as we’ve met in-game… don’t suppose you’re online in wow currently? Because then you could just ask me what you wish to know directly!
Probing an enemy’s defences with chaff before you risk sending anything important is a good strategy, at least - it’s still video gamey but there’s some sense to it
A bit less so now that the Argus lore is established but I imagine getting Detheroc or whoever ghosted by a ballista before you get halfway to the tree would be annoying
When you’ve lived for 25000 years you take your fun where you can get it. Sometimes that’s crushing a city like a sand castle, sometimes it’s watching your minions throw themselves at enemies in a tactically unsound manner on the promise that if one of them succeeds they get a promotion (there is a 50/50 chance you will Finger of Death them anyway).
