I remember from learning Russian at schools that it was always a funny experience as Russian itself has a third grammar gender, which translated into Estonian was basically ‘intersex’ or something. Obviously, for a bunch of kids in the early 2010s meant a lot of cringe humour.
The problem with this is that you don’t need to do anything to give them ammunition, they’ll just find it on their own. You can’t hold yourself to an impossible standard to appease the phobes, because they’ll be phobes in the end anyway. Very often, they even literally just lie and say you’ve done this lie if they can’t find anything from what you’ve done.
Unfortunately, the ignorant masses will always be more easily swayed by the phobes due to how social media and the news favour outrage machines and ‘look at these crazy people’ things bring in the clicks. It’s so much harder to disprove misinformation. In my opinion, the best solution really is simple - more representation. If what the ignorant masses see on the TV as a neutral ‘it/its’ character, they might not as easily fall into a pundit making fun of ‘these crazy people’.
Also a lot of it is what Lintian said too - people on the streets seeing that we’re all still just people. Of course, that in of itself can be dangerous, especially with how polarized the current social culture has become especially with trans people in mind. You would think it’d swing the other way now, and people would make fun of ‘these crazy people watching who goes into which bathroom just to assault anyone who doesn’t pass to some ridiculous standard’… but alas.
Neopronouns in my (very limited and only online observant) experience has been that it’s somewhat less serious than real persons wrt someone’s identity and moreso to do with it being part of a movement making fun of gendered pronouns altogether.
