By his own admission, Tolkien struggled with picturing objects of artifice in detail, so he gave only very general descriptions of the charactersâ clothing.

I do think it also really helps in making the story and world shine through.
Characters end up being less defined by their appearances and more their actions and thoughts. And how they interact with the world.
Which is something many fantasy(in particular) authors can struggle with.
