Playing more then one character

Hello,

I am curious how do you managing to play more then one character? I wanted to create another character but it seems I will have a hard time to use them both, especially with no account wide reputations, progress and doing same things all over again (like Balance of Power questline in Legion), or doing them on alt and not on the main seems terrible. Basically, with my playing time, I finish SL and Legion questing/dailies and reputation grinds and squiz some dungeons or PvP and that’s it, I would like to do more, but just can’t in time I spend in the game. I am also pretty organized so this is not an issue.

As newish player, I have a lot of content to do. For now, I am doing great progress with Legion and SL, I was leveling in WotLK but I hit level 50 pretty fast and didn’t have a chance to enjoy it as much as I wanted to so I am planning to go back and also started WoD, doing garrison things but this expansion doesn’t feel like I have a lot of things to do anyway. Beside those would like to jump in to MoP and BFA, but juggling all is thought. That’s why I wanted to make another character and level it in one of those expansions, but I would like to do that progress on my main, so I can gather reputations, do my professions, unlock things, etc.

is my thinking wrong? Is it really hard to play more then one character or I am missing something? Could/should I change my approach to the game? I don’t want this to be a toxic topic, I just want to hear how do you spent your playing time on more then one character, your thoughts, ideas, suggestions, etc.

Thank you very much.

I simply don’t care about old content when playing an alt, and ignore anything I can ignore, to get to the content I want to do. That means I do not need to care about old reputations - nor about reputations in general, for the most part -, I do not need to care about achievements, past expansions, obsolete currencies, you name it.

I level to 60, grab my soulbinds, craft a legendary (with the soul ash & cinder I sent from my main), and jump into keys. That’s it. I don’t do dailies, I don’t do callings, I don’t grind souls, nor anima, nor rep, nor anything else. I do the content I want to do and happily ignore everything else.

In 9.0, I maintained two characters at very similar gear & progress levels. In 9.1, I had less time, so I only mained one character at the start, but in the second half of the season, I had two other alts at similar gear level, all capable of doing similar key levels. At that point, getting those alts ready for +18-ish keys took about two weeks of very casual play to gear them.

In short: focus on what you want to do at the end, and ignore anything that doesn’t help you towards that. The game is old, and huge, and there’s lots of things you can do, but most of them you really don’t have to.

well, you are trying to play years worth of content at once. as long as its fun to you, you do you. afterall, there is no right or wrong way to enjoy the game.

whats legacy content, aka not current content is concerned, i only go back to it with my main or with whatever character i want to get titles/mounts/transmog/materials with. i dont level in said expansion with any characters, i usually get them all to max level first and choose the fastest route while leveling.

if you feel you need more time in an expansion though, you could stop your exp for a while though and get whatever story done you want to get done. its not a perfect solution but it might help.

and as in current content, i usually only play my main, complete all the stuff to unlock skips and catch ups for alts and then i play alts if i really feel like it. i dont stress myself with alts, if i can only get one m+ done then thats all my alt is going to get.

i mean, i get where you are coming from wanting to do everything on your main but i guess, unless you dont want to one shot everything, creating a new character is your only solution. imo wow needs more account bound reps and stuff, but it is what it is.

I don’t. I prefer focussing on a single main character.
Doesn’t mean I never level up alts, but they do not get the time and resources equal to my main, ever.

This.

You can create alts as a new player, and they are in fact great for covering the various expansions in Chromie Time, one alt per expansion, so that you get many levelled that you can use or choose from later. This is the main use of alts while you are in the new player/catch-up phase.

But really, you feel the main benefit of alts after you have caught up with the game, done (at least somewhat) everything you intend to do for the previous expansions, and want to spend extra time in endgame of the current expansion.

So I wouldn’t push alts on yourself. Use them to explore old expansions you haven’t seen, sure. While doing that, get a general idea of how each class plays, sure. But alts are really for when the content gets thin, as it is now for those of us who have played through Shadowlands, and you can bring them out to have alittle extra fun and variety.

For me, I enjoy the process of learning a new class by levelling it from new. I do this in the down-time between expansions or patches, for example in the run up to Zereth Mortis I levelled an Orc Warrior to 50 (in Cata Chromie time) and a Draenei Shaman to 36 (currently in WoLK Chromie time). In Korthia I did manage to play 4 x chars a week, but that’s because there was so little to do in Korthia and I don’t do much in the way of dungeon, raid or PvP.

As for having all reps and achieves on my main - well, I don’t really care about that at all.

It sounds to me like you’re focused on the wrong part of the game. And that’s not necessarily your fault.

World of Warcraft is about the journey of your character. It’s about putting the work in to each one and building them up.

I love having alts, and I enjoy going through the progress of working grinding the Reps on each one and having goals to work towards.

I respect alot of players don’t enjoy playing the same content over and over, but these same players are the ones who are in M+ dungeons playing the game for no reward other than an imaginary number.

In general. World of Warcraft is the journey of the game, long before it is it’s end game. And as a general rule, its worth remembering that if you want to play World of Warcraft, you need to expect to have to play World of Warcraft.. That means, your alts need to go through all things all over again.

This is super cringe.

I could make similiar remarks for you since the thing you are putting your time in is eventually a game.

You find value in doing what you are doing, some other people find value in doing M+ and upping their ilvl and min-maxing their DPS output.

That’s absolutely fine. But, when those players moan that they have to repeat the same content on their alt, it’s taking away content from the players who enjoy doing the storylines and grinding the reps.

The Stories and the Rep Grinds and the repeat content is much more Core to the game, than Spamming Dungeons for an M+ score.

Eh, it could be served as an option. When you create a character game can ask “would you like this character to have reputations from your other characters” or something similiar (my wording scks rofl).

That way both parties would be happy.

See I don’t think that would be the case. Everyone would naturally take the easy route, it’s human nature.

It’s like how levelling was “improved” during SL. Even I praised it when I went through it the first time around. But in reality it’s taken away a HUGE part of the game, which I enjoyed and will never be able to play through again.

I think rather than just offering people the easy option. It’s would be better for Blizzard to start reminding players that if you want to play World of Warcraft, you should expect to have to play World of Warcraft. Because too many players are beginning to forget that.

Ofcourse, there’s no reason why they can’t add a Paid Boost upgrade option for this.

Why would anyone choose a route they don’t enjoy just because its easier? Especially when the REASON for choosing that path would be so different. Makes no sense.

Because if you want to play World of Warcraft, you should expect to have to play World of Warcraft. Its an entire game as a whole, not it’s own sub-divisions of mini-games which you can choose to participate in just one and ignore the rest of the game. Having said that though, I do agree that there is too much to do to enter these games.

I enjoy a bit of M+, and I do it on all of my alts (I even do a bit of PVP when I feel there is something worth working towards). And I also enjoy working my way through quest lines and progressing through reputations and seeing them progress through that, when I am not doing M+.

It’s a progression that is the very core of the game. So once again, if you want to play World of Warcraft, you should expect to play World of Warcraft.

But given the option, I would always pick the easy route. Because it’s human nature to take the easy route rather than work through the challenge.

As I say, Add it as an optional Paid Boost, if it’s something that you REALLY MUST have, then you could pay for it. But certainly don’t make that a free for all option.

I don’t manage it in any way because I stopped playing alts in 9.0.5. I did keep my favorite ones and do casual levelling 1-50 or maybe 60 when I’m bored or feel like it.

Hmm, because of how the game works in relation to currencies and money, I’d recommend you to run old raids, dungeons and reps for the sake of transmog and mounts. At the same time, you’ll generate liquor money a small fortune as well, take it as a win-win! :yum:

Legends say but not prove that a good transmog set improves your performance by 50% and slowly generates Attachment over time as a tertiary resource :upside_down_face:

I wonder what it’s good for…

So, don’t stress, OP. It’s a lot, but most content is doable with one character.

Notable exceptions are the two achievements for the BfA war campaign as there’s TWO sides to every tale and the Legion Order Hall Feat of Strength, where it’s no less than a dozen. Hey, the more PoV’s, the better. Nuff said. :stuck_out_tongue:

im gonna take out a second mortgage to be able to afford legendaries on my alt

this is pretty much how i treat alts. if a questline has something useful ill do it but my focus is these basically. theres no need to 100% everything your main has done on your alts

tbf tho i barley play alts in shadowlands especially as the new season has just started

There are a lot of catch-up systems, but what there crucially isn’t is shared reputation grinds and the like, though fortunately Zereth Mortis allows you to get the most important things on your alts upon getting the rep on just one character.

But yeah, ultimately having multiple characters maintained to the same level as you otherwise maintained one will drastically increase the amount of playtime you need, no doubt about it. It’s up to you to make that decision.

You will do your things over time
my shaman is a WOD character so he did a lot of stuff with garrisons
my druid is LEGION character he did a lot of stuff in legion
my paladin is BFA character and i had BFA done on that one
Now in shadowland i’m once again playing my shaman

There is a simple solution for this. Make all the items sold by Faction Quartermaster BoA so there is no Need to grind the rep again but you can if you want to. Any unlocks for new zones etc. linked to that rep should also be Account Wide.
These grinds are busy-work and are a main-stay of MMO type game but they should not be needed more than once. It’s enough work the first time. But if people want to grind it again then that should be possible. I never regrind a rep. I have the 100 reps achieve but those are spread over all my alts (mainly 3 alts).
Box of Many Things, Cypher Console, Vision Upgrades and other similar systems should either be Account Wide or have a super fast and easy catchup.
Main thing putting me off Torghast just now is that I have to grind the Box of Many Things. If this was Account Wide then I would be fine investing that much time and effort into a grind but it’s not.
