I used to love rain in WoW until they changed it sometime ago (can’t remember when) and was really hoping to see the old rain effects in classic again, but realized classic uses the new effects instead of the old ones.
Here are some examples :

I really really hope that blizzard is planning to bring the old weather effects back!!! The rain looks a lot better and the increased fog looks really good as well.
It seems to me that the first video shows a heavy thunderstorm, while the second just normal rain.
There are thunderstorms on the new classic client too (not just raindrops falling, but simulated sheets of rain using a fog effect, as in the first video).
We have a similar report listed about this in the google sheet that Dantini made on the Vanilla Classic Era discord to track down all the Classic Era bugs related to the original 1.12 vanilla behavior, that we are still keeping updated.

Yep the weather effects were amazing. Would be great to get them back, but im afraid even those would be something the modern community complains about.
I cant tell you how many times in Zul Gurub groups i saw people asking “how do i turn the weather effects down?”.
PATHETIC! If you cant handle virtual rain, you cant be in a group with the thunderstorm that is Upright.
