Chat channels are exclusively used by gold sellers and serve no purpose within the game except to make it worse. It is not something we had in vanilla either, and thus has no reason to be here.
It makes it harder to report gold sellers too, making it harder for Blizzards detection system to even discover them. Lets nip this industry in the bud before it gets feet to stand on.
Edit: I might have been somewhat unclear here. The invite spam is the root of this problem. I dont mind /join channelname as a concept
Could this not be handled on coms and in officer chat? Our server rarely has 5 minutes without a new invite from a lvl 1 trying to sell you gold.
At the very least remove the option to invite people to it. Make it like regular /join and allow setting a password for closed channels. Not even blocking invites solve this as you’ll still get their spam in your chat.
For 2nd time
This is not a guide, But you Can Google it for futher information.
Blizzard already made a solution.
go to settings ingame, social or smt. Tick on Block Channel invites
now you wont get the pop up. However you Can now se in general chat “a user invited for Channel bl.a. bl.a. But where blocked”.
right click general chat window, go to settings go to other, untick “channels”
If you do this correctly that wont affect any other channels ingame at all, except the “you blocked Inv from Channel bl.a. bl.a.”
Then this problem is solved for good.
Thank you.
Remember it aint a guide, so if the guidelines are wrong, Google how to, instead of correcting me.
(I did this at release, so be fair, haven’t done it since - might remember wrong - But point is u Can remove it 100% - only blocking Channel inv, Will make u se a notify in chat, that you blocked this Channel inv, so u sort of still get “spammed”)
And some people grief fishers by standing over the bobber while mounted, so please remove mounts from the game.
And sometimes people tag your ore while you’re fighting the mobs to get there… so please remove mining.
Alternatively, we could focus on a sensible course of action against gold sellers, that doesn’t involve making the majority pay with the removal of a useful core function of the game… all because of the actions of a small minority of crooks.
Chat channels is something we had in Vanilla (I know - I was there), and they’re very useful. Both for AddOns to communicate between each other (like Damage Meters) and for Guild/Class specific chat.
I do agree, however, that the bot spam has become a problem.
