Playing shaman tank in season of discovery was actually pretty fun.
I hope season of discovery was meant to test the waters and see how it worked out in hopes of adding it in the future.
4 specs might be a lot for one class but honestly if it’s to add a new role I think it is justified.

I guess they’ve been toying with this idea ever since vanilla, if you look at the classic talent tree. I honestly don’t know why they refuse to actually make it happen.

True, I was thinking about that as well but Druid was a special situation since guardian and feral started off as a single feral tree.
When they changed the talent tree in MoP they had to split it up, otherwise feral would be tank and dps role at the same time or have fewer to no choice in talents for your desired role.
So they only did that because they needed to, DH which we got after MoP only got 2 specs which shows that they want to be more conservative with specs.
Evoker only got a third because it fills a new role as support.
I think if they could they would have split druids into two classes with druid of the claw and keeper of the grove, with two specs each.
So druids did not really get a 4th spec, feral was always 50/50 and they decided to make it 100/100 with the redesign of talents.

I would actually think the opposite… Usually when new players or players in general ask for what class to play or alt, druid comes up as a suggestion because it has the 4 playstyles… Ranged, melee, tank and healer
So adding tank to shaman, would for me be the equivalent, would be fun tbf!
