Point of Engineering?

So after some funny gadgets during early/mid levelling, say up to 30-40, is the only remaining point in engineering to throw iron grenades in pvp?
Because it seems to me that for all other purposes after some initial fun during low levels it becomes completely obsolete and extremely gimmicky or even detrimental to your party if it backfires, aka I can use a fun trick for 60 seconds once per hour and that’s about it.
In its current state it seems pretty badly designed, or not? I mean at the very least, seaforium charges should be able to open lockboxes and chests, instead of totally pointlessly just doors only?
And especially in higher levels, using the potentially cool stuff becomes a big no-no because of the chances of backfiring - for example the shrink ray… if it shrinks your party, then you messed up, but it’s outside your control, same for net projector when it doesn’t help to root the mob in a vital life&death situation when your group pulled too many mobs in the instance run, but instead nets yourself and that causes a wipe?
Just not worth the bag slot and hassle when every high level party will just say “please keep your fun stuff out of this run, we’re trying seriously here and want to avoid the risk of it malfunctioning”?
And of course you will eventually just get much better items that will push the engineering items out, once you leave the mid-level range, because they just cannot compete with anything higher level gear/trinkets?
I don’t know, the whole profession looks to me like the devs were not able to really commit to it and just held it back in every regard, making it suck and yet important if you want to go pvp just for the iron grenade spam?
And wouldn’t ANY other profession just offer you so much more, reliably, consistently and increasingly useful, in comparison?

Edit: Constructive suggestions to make Engineering viable outside of pvp iron grenade spam in higher character levels:

  • Remove backfiring for trinkets that can have vital effects in dungeon runs, if player reaches a high enough engineering skill.
  • Let Seaforium charges open chests and lockboxes.
  • Reduce cooldown times to make your trinkets actually worth while, instead of just one minute per every hour, that’s ridiculous.
  • Add many more items, that are useful at higher levels too. For example the harm prevention belt is nice, but the shield stops to be useful very early on due to its low capacity - where is the endgame version of that thing?
  • Make bombs useful AT ALL. Currently they are the most stupidest thing you can use, gimping yourself by doing so in most situations compared to using grenades instead.
  • Improve higher level grenades compared to iron grenades, nobody uses anything else.

I think it also gives sprint, which is a viable mechanic for low mobility classes

But most importantly it gives you goggles, dude. The only sexy head gear in wow ever

It’s a fun, unpredictable experimental style of profession, it was created back when role playing games actually had a role playing element, not just ZERGTOWINGGNEXTFIGHTINSTANTREWARD

It’s the best profession in the game by far, by the way. You won’t find a single hardcore guild that doesn’t require you to have engineering.

Could you elaborate why? Which particular engineering items do they want you to bring?

Being able to decent aoe tank in raids requires engineering.
20 engineers with goblin sappers oneshot viscidus blobs.
Seaforium blasts DMN/BRD doors.
Goblin cables have a 50/50 chance of resurrection if your healer is dead/druid.
Parachute cloak saves you from death at falling.
Not to mention teleport trinkets to gadget/everlook.

Brainstorming changes that would improve the profession is pointless as they will not implement any of them

Mostly battle chicken, arcanite dragonling and sapper charges. Force reactive disk is very good for aoe tanking.

And for pvp, it’s in a league of its own. Flame reflector is almost necessary for large scale world pvp, mc cap and rocket helm are both insane, nades are super strong, a bunch of the trinkets are really good.

Agreed, goblin sapper charges sound nice and the teleporter is very nice, apart from its 4h CD.
Force-reactive disc sounds interesting, does it actually exist in this patch?

Parachute cloak, though… the only case is when the Gadgetzan teleporter “fails” and puts you into mid-air, ie a self-induced problem in engineering.

Goblin cables only help you if you’re a rogue and could get out of combat.

I guess Engineering is just a profession you do when you’re wealthy enough and that has only niche use cases for very specific characters.

For example jumper cables -> rogue.
Disc -> prot warrior.
etc… very small use profile for your actual char.
There should be more items that have broad usefulness for any class at high levels.

@Gravedave
Well why not, did they really say so?

Not everything has to be part of some boss encounter theorycrafting.
For PvP it is seriously helpful. and also it’s like… just fun…?

Of course it exists. The recipe is an MC drop. And it’s the only item in game that allows you to tank a massive packs like imps/goblins/trolls/spiders

So you can be a undead male mage and throw a grenade and then you can do the /roar macro while casting your frostbolt.

Doesn’t work in classic

Jumper cables are useful for everyone. Why rogue? Others can survive the wipe after healer is dead. As for making money - thorium shells can be a goldmine, ez-throw dynamite, scopes, rifles can earn you quite a gold, especially this early in game.

And BTW, if you are in a hardcore guild you are forced to bring this https://classicdb.ch/?item=10725 to every raid.

I actually googled the advantages of eng for pvp and it gave me quite a list of items that I can definitely see coming in useful. It gives you more versatility and unpredictability in combat tactics and sort of emulates skills or other classes. Definitely will pick it up for my alt or later on for my main

And some of the Green Lens being pre-bis for casters, The Frost / Fire / Shadow Reflectors / Arcanite Bombs for the seriously rich pvp’ers, Rocket boots / Helm nothing much worthwhile in Engineering at all.

It was a decent money maker in the early days after launch, better than gathering professions for sure. It will fall off in the long run, with scopes and bullets being pretty much the only craftables in constant demand.

Engineering is a profession intended mostly for the benefit of your own character.

Engineering is, beyond anything else, fun. It has plenty of useful devices, not just explosives. The variety of trinkets is amazing: jumper cables, transporters, reflectors… An engineer that’s not a healer can still bring someone back to life every 30 minutes: even if it fails, they can try. Even with some items backfiring or having long cooldowns it already gives you an advantage over non-engineers because it allows you to do things other people can’t, whereas crafters for the most part make items other people can just buy. Nobody else has this potential.

u have absolutely no clue it seems?
u know u can change gear midcombat?
change gear, activate gear, change back to ur original gear
bam, huge advantage
and theres quite alot of gimmicks there, u just need to use ur brain to maximize it
if thats detrimental to u then so be it
no think about it if 10 ppl in a bg use those gimmicks vs 10 ppl who dont?
a single use within 1 hour can sometimes decide wether u lose or win a bg, u just gotta make use of it in the perfect moment

Weapons / shields ONLY.
