Pointless stat gating. "you can only equip x in x category"

So I just wasted a gem on a nice trinket upgrade, but it wont let me equip it unless I use a different gem. What is the point of this gating? 40 extra agi should be a bonus for me, it shouldn’t be gated off for me to make these decisions?

Gating, go an learn what the word means.

As I recall you are only allowed one of those gems equipped. You already have one somewhere on your gear. If you could put multiple agility gems then there’d be no need for other gem types. If that as the case then why bother having gems.

(I should stay off the forums on the weekend, it gives me headaches.)

Gating, meaning forced lack of choice. Gating us off from making decisions.

There have always been limitations in the amount of the top level gems you can equip ever since JC was brought into the game. There is no gating here there is just you not reading the tooltip and now getting upset by the whole thing.

That’s not gating. You had your choice and you already chose a ‘bonus’ main stat gem. Grow up.

‘Grow up’ said the person having a go at me.

If that’s what you think ‘having a go’ at someone is… dread to think what you’d make of someone actually having a go at you.

Gating is placing a barrier to block access to something until a criteria is met then the gate is open allowing access.
A rep gate blocks access until you reach the specified level of rep, Revered or Exalted.
A quest gate only allows access once you’ve completed a quest (line).
A time gate just means the gate is closed until a period of time has passed.

Not all limitations or restrictions are gates. Not a big deal just semantics…

The gem’s do state they are ‘unique-equipped’.

Fine, Learn to Read then.

The gem states “Unique Equipped”, if you don’t know what Unique means, here you go.

Dictionary result for unique

/juːˈniːk/

adjective

  1. being the only one of its kind; unlike anything else

This in and of itself is kinda dumb dont you think? It both devalues gemslots, AND devalues Jewelcrafting as a profession
Back in Wrath, Cata, and MoP gems and enchants were a trade commodity like alchemy, today they are reduced to a once a month thing
People in wrath would stack every kind of stat x3 on their weapon or chest or whatever, i dont see why not

You have haste - versatility - mastery - critical and one main stat gem (that clearly say they are UNIQUE EQUIPPED) to chose from. I actually see choices that you can decide from…

It would be hugely OP to be able to stack those gems.

Even when professions had perks that allowed you special extras, they were always limited.

‘‘It would be hugely OP’’, how again? Oh thats right, because gem slots are a casino, maybe the heart of the issue isnt player freedom but rather the fact that we compete against a slot machine for character customisation?

Nobody cried over how ‘‘OP’’ triple reds were in wrath, because everyone could if they did the related content get a piece of gear appropriate to them that had 3 red gem slots

It is only OP in the sense that Blizzard puts it behind a wall of luck

Whilst I agree they’ve destroyed professions and the bonuses they bring, restrictions on unique equipping has been in game a long time.

This isn’t a bonus, the Stamina from Blacksmithing was a ‘‘bonus’’
Gems shouldnt be unique equipped since there is nothing unique about them, seems pretty logical to me
I get the unique equip of gear since they are all seperate entities, but gems are just a commodity, like herbs, or ore, they are indistinguishable from one another so there is no reason for them to be unique equipped

Jewelcrafters could make their own more powerful gems. They were limited how many they could equip. When they more or less took all the perks away from professions they changed it so everyone has access to the same stuff. In this case one more powerful gem (primary stat) and the rest secondary stat gems.

Yeah, you had a unique equipped on the +20 given mainstat but you could still put in as many +14 main stats gems as you pleased
I thought that was what OP was complaining about, the fact that across all his gear he can only have 1 main stat gem at all

As we all know, a toon can only have a certain amount of main stat.
If they pass the upper limit they start to pixelate out, tear and clip dramatically, then explode like a cheap firework.

Stamina was from mining.

Blacksmithing could create sockets on bracers and gloves.
