Potions in roleplay!

Evening,

I’m wanting to roleplay a meandering Alchemist, who sells his concoctions and also uses them in battle.

I wanted to get an idea for what type of potions y’all think would be useful! Please feel free to post a potion, make a name for it and explain its effects!

Health potions. Always good. Mana potions are insane if people actually play by mana standards. Anything resistance potions are also pretty swell. Potions of invisibility are the best, imagine a knight suddenly appearing behind you omae wa mo shindeiru style and you’re like nani before he beheads you.

Really amazing and underused. Also fun to incorporate is the acquisition of the materials. Most of the time that is bypassed by the master alchemist pulling them out of nowhere, sadly.

Edit: Incorporating side-effects can also be very enriching

Potion seller. I am going into battle, and I want only your strongest potions.
Echoing what Stirrer said: Go for it!

What if they are too strong for travelers? Some potions could kill full-grown dragons… let alone a man…

Memes aside, I wish people RPd alchemists and potion sellers more often. Like, healing potions and resource potions are important things yet in this game I feel that the vast majority of all healing/buffing seems to be done by /e channels light/druid/shaman magic and it stops the bleeding

Hello there!

My first suggestion would be to look at the potions you can make via Alchemy profession; since they both have a name, mentioned what ingredients they need and basically canon, therefore usable IC I guess.

But generally speaking i can mention:
Healing potions
Mana potions
Sleeping potions, making one sleep.
Maybe some toxins and poisonous stuff.
Antidotes.
Empowerment potions (either in strength, swiftness or magical strength/intellect)
Explodable ones (when their vial shatters)
Liquid fire
And generally various kinds of medicine.

Some magical ones like:
One for walking on water.
Maybe one which can float you temporarily.
Granting resistance to specific types of magic or enhancing one’s defense.

And others, these were some ideas I had. Good luck!

Healing potions are obvious but don’t sleep on invisibility potions. They are not only heavily represented in the actual game, they are also used by the lore characters (like Shandris).

On this note, I thought it prudent to raise something that may have been slightly missed out; can you drown or be drowned with underwater breathing potions?

Potions are a very underused theme in RP. They can be used in any numerous situations, ranging from combat, healing, medicine, day to day and so on.

Healing potions are always a prime target for any numerous adventurers and soldiers with extra coin to spend.
Mana or energy potions, depending on how you RP are also a luxury for any user, and perhaps a new market to explore.
Utility potions are also in high demand, again for healers, mender and adventurers alike, antidotes are always good to have since they spare your mender an headache.

Likewise, your imagination is the limit on this topic, since you can draw inspiration from many topics. Potions that put someone to sleep or induce a dream. Potions to see beyond the veil or talk to spirits. Potions that allow you to see beyond one limit vision, or improve your hearing to a point you can track something or someone. Resistance potions, potion to improve your reflex and strength, empower your spells for a short while and why stick to merely potions?
Vials of acid and liquid flames can be used as a last resort, even a combination of liquids that once in contact with the air creates a smoke fog to cloud someone’s retreat?

Of course some potions will be of rare quality, even hard to make so you couldn’t just have a stock of anti-dragon flame potions. Again discretion is always a good thing. I can give you Cad example here, in which she always carries a healing potion with her and a potion to improve her reflexes, since you never know when you’ll need the extra edge in a fight or to save someone when a mender is not available.

I been selling potions on the side for some years, I mainly stick to the classic healing potion with a side effect of high risk addiction

but there are many great and weird elixirs out there in the game world, some quest related some profession made others looted from mobs
there are potions and elixirs for anything, changing gender, turning you into a plant or tree, into animals, stone, a cloud, etc
not only that some can empower you for short or long periods and a few can even allow you to see into the shadow realm

heck there is even a dream elixirs that allows you to explore the world around you while your body sleeps.

My advice is this:
remember the name of flowers and what they are used for but don’t limit yourself there are more types of flora than what you can pick, and with the large near endless selection of odd potions the sky is basically the limit on what you can brew, just keep it reasonable.

Just go by the potions you can actually make in the game and quests that also describes making some potions that you can’t make but exists in the lore. That’s what I think atleast

You used to be able to google just about any herb to get a nice description of them that can be used for RP, though seems that’s not the case anymore??
Have a document though (not made by me)
It’s full of descriptions for some herbs and how they can be used for some potions. Really cool, can share it if anyone wants
