And so is Justin Bieber a widely popular singer yet. His actions sometimes times causes people to puke in disgust.
And does it in the most destructive way possible. By stealth-updating the addon and holding anyone who uses the addon hostage. Without a warning period. Without nothing. If it was a real commercial product that we could even argue an “abuse of monopoly” cause people currently don’t have an alternative addon available.
Im not gonna argue about what he did was right nor not.
However it amazes me that twitch/wow community learned nothing from what happend to Reckful when a large community acts as a lynch mob on him. Its sad.
TLDR- Are people really that emotionally invested in an addon ?
The problem is. Nnogie has done nothing to show himself into a better light. If we remember a year back when DBM’s author wrote his about his difficult life and got a PC donated by MSI(IF I am not mistaken right)? Yet despite all that and DBM being used longer and even by a bigger audience than MDT…he never even considered putting even a 1$ paywall.
Yet Nnogie is salty for losing the race and decides to take it out on the community. I am sorry. I am trying really really hard and I still cant find at least 1 excuse to defend him.
Not really emotional per say. But more like recovering from the shock. Like I said. If Nnogie had warned in advance and people had prepared for it. Sure, some would still be angry but the hate at this point would be minimalized.
People are most likely more angry about “Wakes up 1 morning, updates addons and sees it no longer works”, goes checking out what’s wrong and sees a greedy Nnogie with $$ in his eyes: “Want my addon to work? PAY UP PAL!”
He can’t monopolize “functionality” of said addon, because alternative can be made. Afterall his earnings are entirely based on people’s good will to share some moneyz with him. Pissing off community is not really a good way to make people give money you know.
In the end of the day, another similar addon will take mdt place and this nnodude will lose most money he had from voluntary donations without getting any mandatory payments he is hoping to recieve. It was dumbest move ever to make and he made it. He is indeed dumbo and sore loser who can’t see outside of the box.
It is not against ToS. Case closed. Anyone who says different didn’t learn to read with comprehension. Proof? Zygor running well over 10 years with same model. TSM and streamers selling their UIs is the same thing.
Perhaps. Fortunately, two can play that game. Under the license he made that addon. Anyone can upload(github fork it) with the “paywall guarded data” without any repercussions and it already has been done(Manbaby’s dungeon tools. Still keking about it ) So the guy wins absolutely nothing… but loses a lot.
He never cared about money, if that never crossed your mind, try thinking about it.
But yes, with his license anyone can do a fork. Keeping up with updates and data updates, well, lets see. Lets see if those people can withstand all the hate as well.
Creates a paywall…yet “doesn’t care about money”. Aight…sure…
A lot of popular addons are done on “volunteer work” and are mostly afloat by voluntary donations. So I see no reason why somebody else couln’t pick up the “tab” and keep updating the needed data and etc.
And regarding hate. Heck. I would even donate those 5 eur for the guy who forked it. Simply for putting the real “manbaby” in his place.
So yeah…somebody will have to withstand all the hate indeed.
Streamers ‘‘selling’’ their UI/WA’s after subbing to their channel isnt even close to the same thing.
You can download Elvui / Weakaura’s as standalone addons and those addons will work without the profiles of said streamers, you dont need anything special.
You can set up your UI at any point in time without their ‘‘data’’.
Where as MDT requires knowledge of the Dev Toolkit that he supplies to ‘‘add’’ the mobs to the map.
And not everyone who can download addons can also work with said addons / dev kits. And than ‘‘you need’’ to pay to get functionality out of his addon, or find another addon that does the same.
The “crybabies” will get their updates from alternative sources anyway. So if he thought he could spite them…then he also failed there as well.
He damaged his reputation. And for any streamer -reputation is vital. You can be the best “keyboard basher in the world” but if your behavior worse than the devil’s. Well sure…some people might still be attracted to him I suppose, but he would have a larger fanbase if he played good and was a descent human person.
So this nerd-rage and that thingy with “free nudz plz”. IF he did this to attract attention to the issue of getting hounded by …crybabies as you call them. Then in the end he showed the finger to pretty much everyone, including people who may have been sympathetic towards him. Painted himself as one big crybaby who is throwing a tantrum cause his “favorite team didn’t win”.
I see no way how he could have won anything there…only lost.
Meh, people who were already subs would get the updates anyway, anyone else really doesn’t matter. His biggest mistake was putting the addon for public use.
yes, he did and people will flame him with the tag “crybaby” without caring for the backstory
and they do
yet again.. do mind it is unethical to say the least, requiring a volunteer to serve you..
i do blame him for his language and he certainly lost it, however he is completely in his right to be pissed off by random clickers that literally don’t care for anything but a 3-4 digit number (and can’t even make a macro to announce a rez or idkwh)
This has me wondering, what will happen the following weeks.
He started the whole “pay for the addon” move because he wants more recognition for his work. But it seems that all his replies / behaviour in general about this will hurt his reputation and he just threw all the hard work of the last couple of years into the trash.
Putting his twitch and raiding “career” on the edge and risk it all because he wants a few bucks for an addon that isnt even used so much.
If you watch American reality TV, especially those home-improvement shows, you’ll notice many don’t have paintings on the walls, or if they do, the paintings are blurred out… yes, the network has to pay the artists royalties if their artwork happens to be in the same room as a camera.
I’m an illustrator, I make all my money through art, and I find parts of the mercantile nature of artists to be incredibly idiotic and more harmful to the arts than it is good.
That said, selling dungeon data is idiotic and mercantile as well. The guy knew the popularity of MDT and hoped to make some quick cash while people are still learning the paths in mythics.
Little did he know I’ll completely ignore MDT and just learn the paths on me own.
i was just being an troll really but preach has said on videos before that ppl he has played with in top guilds were not that good at the game as you would think and he was talking about method, that he was in for a short time but that was players from that time that might not even be in top guilds now
why are people spreading this crap… Of course Nnoggie can be salty but if you’re doing so much work for free and then entitled idiots come to your stream and DEMAND updates while you’re racing to world first… give me a break. people are awful. He could’ve handled it differently but I dont really blame the guy
heya i made my comment before this all blew up like crazy i mean no harm just that when he died in WF race first every time we would laugh in twitch chat and i made a daft comment on that premise ,nothing toxic
Well, I can certainly blame him: he knows there isn’t, and should not be, any monetary reward for developing - and maintaining - an addon. He went through with it anyway. The only recognition one should get from this is the grateful thank you, from a community of players who use it. One, harmless, way of monetizing your efforts is to actively ask for donations in sites like Patreon (on your addon’s page in Curseforge, for example), not lock the ability to actually use the addon behind a literal paywall (thereby creating a “premium”-only version of the addon).
I understand that having people come to your stream and demand updates is an ill-considered move on these people’s part, but what he did is not only just as insidious, it is also against the addon rules that Blizzard themselves have set.

In conclusion, I cannot stand by his decision, nor encourage others to “be gentle” with Nnoggie. His decision will simply lead to other developers picking up a fork of his addon code, slapping the data into it, and making a name for themselves, by offering a version with the same functionality, but without any costs attached (as they have, by the way); a move that Nnoggie cannot even complain about, since he is in the wrong, based on Blizzard’s policy on addons, and the whole point of Github (where his code is stored), is for people to be able to fork your code and work on it themselves.
Edit: Adding to the above, there is a line, in the addon guidelines, about Blizzard going as far as “…taking legal measures…” against addon creators that violate their guidelines.
