I would disagree, since it would feel unfair to everybody who farmed those bosses as it is now. What would be the point of going hardcore for mop world bosses if people can simply farm them with certainity? Im aware you can get them on BMAH for gold, but that’s not comparable to what you’re suggesting, since an absolute majority of the playerbase will never have that amount of gold.
For me one of the problems with rate mounts starts when eventually you have done so many tries for it that it doesn’t feel fun at all. It feels like a complete and utter chore. And sometimes it feels like Blizzard knows it and takes full advantage of peoples OCD of having everything in the game and adds stuff like Soundless. (Extremely low drop rate with huge respawn timer) Essentially they know people will spend years farming them and that translates to sweet sweet $dollar$ bills since this is subscription game. Eventually when you try aiming for such a mount the game transforms from a game to a job. A job which might actually reward you with 0 things for your hours/days/months spent.
What I am trying to say, the problem with some of the rare mounts is that you can put a gigantic amount of effort and have absolutely nothing to show for it because RNG.
This sums it up perfectly.
Oh, that’s not bad at all, that’s dedication.
As far as I know the most deserved love rocket so far is from niixten, who’s one of the top collectors in the world, 6.009 kills, which if you think about it is insane, cause I always thought that was one of those mounts where you either get lucky or you can say goodbye to, but niixten did exactly the opposite: he proved you can beat bad luck even on that, I think at that amount of tries 5 out of 6 people would have the rocket, so there’s by definition no luck needed to get it in those tries.
That you even got past the 50% overall likelihood on rocket is great effort considering, like you said, the narrow farming window.
Unlike you I really like tracking the amount of kills for all of my mounts, and kill-wise the most terrible so far were oondasta with 5.351 total tries including bonus rolls and timereaver, 4.874 tries + got it traded from a lucky friend that same kill, else I could easily reach 10.000 and no mount given my luck.
I have no idea how many chars you have but if you have 20 at least, fly them all to mechagon, even if you don’t have the isle unlocked! You go to a chest spawn you know exactly where it is, you won’t see the icon on map if you didn’t unlock it but you will be able to open it if it’s up at the time, there it is, lots of tries with minimum effort, and chest respawn is pretty fast.
I was unlucky with cogstar and that’s how I made up for it.
@DH who mentioned soundless: that’s terrible, yes, I managed it with 362 kills but I’m aware it could’ve been even 1.000 with that drop rate, and it’s “kind of” temporary cause if you don’t make it by the end of bfa it gets harder (not impossible, you just don’t get sharing groups any more), and I might not have been able to do 1.000 this exp, that would’ve sucked.
I disagree, bad luck protection on those sort of items would mean theres no point in getting them. Tusks wouldn’t be 1% as cool of everyone was running around with them.
I dont belive in prestige items. Only few people have it bcoz they can show off - that’s no from me.
again maybe im in the minority, but i dont get how people think its ok to have to kill a mob sometimes thousands of times to get an item, and still not be guaranteed it will drop.
almost no mob can be killed over and over on the spot. there is some time investment involved for each npc, either a respawn time or having to clear an instance up to them (and then hit instance lockout cap).
the time involved is just insane. literally clinically insane.
and people think this is acceptable? as if many players dont have some form of mental health issue anyway.
BUT, there are 2 other points here which i think nearly everyone casually ignores:
-
Anything before legion is legacy content, and is over 4 years old. Even legion content tbh is almost half a decade old almost. we are talking about content that is years old, up to a decade and a half. do you really begrudge someone getting ashes, a 13 year old mount in 2020? really? REALLLLLLLLLLY? If the answer is still yes, then you sorta need to take a hard look at YOURSELF.

while this thread is mainly about mounts, it falls under the same category as pets, toys and transmog: collectibles. people trying to fill out the collectibles tab are HEAVILY punished. its not just one mount that fails to drop kill after kill, its TENS OF THOUSANDS of items that refuse to drop, or drop on the right character (cloth dropping on plate toon for example).
i did a test list years ago of BWL. i cleared it over 4 weeks with 10+ toons. most main items dropped. but nearly ALL items dropped on the wrong toon. so, after nearly a years worth of clears in a month, i was still missing a majority of transmog because i couldn’t learn it on the toon it dropped for.
and BWL is just one instance! like i said, one of the problems collectors are hit with is that EVERY item is rng, first if it drops, then if it drops on the right toon. there are easily over a 100 instances in the game, some easier or shorter than others, but still, thats over 100 instances. this takes time. and an unreasonable amount of time in the current state of the game.
I think drop rates like 1 in 1.000 (0,1%) or lower are only ok on spam-farmable stuff, example fishing mounts, casts are very fast, so sea turtle, riding turtle, pond nettle, great sea ray, it’s ok.
But you can’t expect us to farm a 1 in 4.000 timereaver when it takes minutes per kill or love rocket or world bosses, luckily for some of them there’s a way out, BMAH! Timereaver you can rely on lucky friends who would give you the mount if you have any, love rocket not even that, it’s not tradeable.
Indeed, hell I like rare mounts (I got Ashes of Alar on a transmog run, so I was pretty lucky - but there’s other mounts, like the White Hawkstrider (the only way alliance can get one, not counting the Void-Elf-Mount) that I have never even seen drop! Not when it was current content, not during time-walking (which should IMHO be always available for instances - and changing weekly for raids!), not when I was farming it…hell, Hawkstrider is only Heroic, so you can’t even spam the instance!)
There should never be 0.1 percent chance for something to drop IMHO!
Seriously, I do have - some - rare mounts, like Ashes and the Huntsman Mount (the one from old Karazhan (BC!))…but others? Yeah, no and I would not have any problem if anybody could (with reasonable time invested - I don’t want them to drop 100%) easily get them!
Hell, I’d love it if people had more mounts as I love variety…even the ones that don’t actively farm mounts because they might geht lucky on time-walk or something!
Wow, this surprises me cause the hawkstrider is 4%, it’s one of the highest drop rate mounts that aren’t guaranteed in game!
RNGesus hates me…what can I say? I mean I am also doing Deathwing regularly but I am still missing two of the dragons that can drop there…
Ah, my DS luck wasn’t really good, took me 106 tries for blazing on normal and 285 ultrax normal first, then I did hc for lifebinder, did so cause back then it wasn’t possible to solo hc till wod pre patch, and took me 254 tries for it and got like 6 duplicate mounts during that, including several blazings, which were annoying since you could get a mount from the boss you wanted and still end up empty handed.
Bonus was I really liked DS though, so that made up for it.
