Of the top of my head
Squishiness: Protection Paladins currently feel too fragile compared to other tanks, often struggling to survive in challenging content like raids and Mythic+ even when trying to make a pseudo cd rotation .
Holy Power Economy Issues: The economy around generating and spending Holy Power feels clunky, leading to frustrating gaps in gameplay where abilities don’t align smoothly, making the playstyle feel less fluid.You’ll often struggle to cast anything but shield of the righteous and if you dare cast a word of glory or use hammer of light you’ll more often than not get torn apart …
Reduced Damage Output: Recent changes have significantly reduced their damage, which impacts threat generation and slows down overall progression in content.
Nerfed Talents: Some key talents that were once central to Protection Paladin’s effectiveness have been nerfed, making them less viable compared to other tanks.
Lack of Competitive Utility: While Paladins have utility, other tanks seem to offer more powerful or consistent support options, leaving Protection Paladins feeling outclassed in group content(Grip packing rallying cry etc… come to mind)
Divine Steed Feels Underwhelming: Mobility is a known weakness, and Divine Steed feels outdated and clunky compared to the movement abilities of other tanks.
Damage Mitigation Feels Weak: Key mitigation abilities, like Shield of the Righteous, don’t feel as impactful, causing problems with handling burst damage or prolonged heavy incoming damage.
Avenger shield: Often viewed a signature move of the prot pally hit like a wet noodle and doesn’t generate holy power (can we revert the nerfs already ??) …
At this point, just like with ret, same with prot, the whole “but paladins have utility, they can’t have good dmg, healing or defensives on their DPS AND TANK SPECS, they’d be too strong”.
By all means, let’s compare the utility of other dps specs and tank specs, draw a line and see that rets/prots have barely anything that a holy paladin won’t provide and other classes offer more value.
The only thing prots have over the other two specs, in pve at least, is blessing of spellwarding.
Now, do let me know, what will give you more magic dmg reduction in a party, a blood dk( or any dk tbh) with aoe anti-magic shells AND anti magic zone or the “holy” noodle?
And the list goes on.
I’m truly ready to have the tinfoil hat and say that they’re keeping paladins gutted, including the upcoming class tree changes which offer pathetic “healing”, if you can call it that or anything better whatsoever , just because most will don’t care since “look paladin, you’re getting ure updated judgement set, so it’s fine that MAGES OF ALL CASTERS, are tankier than you now, have fun being taken in raids just for devo aura as holy”…
For fixes, either have the other tanks nerfed to the ground, like prot is, to “balance things out” or if somehow buffs are given, have haste not be as important as it is now, make avenger shield great again, and dont just throw a pathetic dot dmg on it from tier 2 in dragonflight, that won’t make a change in making you feel good about “BOY, I used my signature ability”
I’m even at a point where I’d take back the prot of legion and, if my memory serves me right, abit from BFA too,which had no holy power and 3 charges of shiled of the righteous.
To be honest, the only spell that feels good to press as prot rn is just judgement, that’s it, judgement during wings.
No shot anyone types that. Prot has best utility out of all tanks, the moment it’s tankier it’s insta bis in keys. Spellward/Bop, Sac, Loh, Freedom and avenger’s shield kicks are nuts, hoj is ok piece of utility, blinding light is meh but still helps out. Poison dispell is also one of the useful dispells this season.
Get more haste + play divine purpose and/or bastion of light.
On what actually stinks though, we’re just less tanky than others tanks.
Sentinel stinks big time with it being 20s duration(with sanctified wrath) versus 25s duration crit wings → that loses us a lot of hopo gen.
Avenger’s shield doesn’t extend shake of heavens and because of that we only press it for kicks, that massively stinks → make it extend shake baseline instead only from punishment
WoG is just still a bit too weak, it heals you for like 2,5m when you’re under 30% hp which isn’t even half of our health bar LOL.
WoG costs mana when self healing → There’s no shot we still have to pay for jb’s outcry on twitter in s1 df, just give us mana refund on self heals already ffs…
But the biggest pain of all is remembering that we’re getting straight up nerfed by class tree changes coming in 11.0.5, whoever tried to cook up didn’t think at all what they’re doing. -4% multiplicative haste modifier, -10% cdr from seal of order. If those 2 things also get compensated then we’re gonna be at least net positive(gift of the golden valkyr, uther’s counsel are massive buffs imho)
Divine Steed is the greatest talent since 2008.
I think this comes down to paladins in general being squishy be it PvE or PvP.

I dislike that a frost dk is tankier than us. I dislike the rework… Thank god we get a talent in the rework that makes us able to bubble with forbearance, which shouldn’t be needed. Well, how about make us tankier so we don’t need to use bubble with forbearance because the simple thought that you are still going to die after you used Lay on Hands is just stupid. The only good thing we get is the auto Blessing of Sacrifice, but when you think of it… what good comes from saving the mage too stupid to use barrier on cd when you can’t even save yourself. The person you saved with sac is going to die in about 30 seconds from melee bcoz tank is dead
auto sac is awful. Giving someone sac when they drop low just means they die anyways. You wanna sac someone at full hp so they don’t die to a one shot. Also rework is a net nerf still → losing 10% cdr for hopo generators and 4% MULTIPLICATIVE haste is massive loss
Prot Paladin’s performance has actually become a meme on r/wow and other communities. Healers that don’t play prot have even voiced that we need improvements as they have noticed they struggle to heal them compared to other classes.
I have seen in group finder people take other tanks of lower ilvl than Prot palas that are in the queue.
Who thinks we’ll see any buffs before November?
Currently prot pala is:
tank with the worst mitigation (even with SoTR + Concentration being up);
tank with the least amount of stamina;
tank with the worst self sustain;
tank with the most challenging defensive rotation
Today I did +5 keys on my prot pala and on my prot warrior (both geared 605).
My prot warrior was 90% of the time on 80% + health.
My pala was half of the time on below 50% health, despite having SotR and concec up all the time ( I have 30% haste, haste heavy gear + flask in order to keep SotR).
In Dragonflight I used to be squishy without SotR and Concentration up . Now I am a squishy all the time.
Our utility is fantastic, but the alive tank with no utility is infinitely better than the dead tank with all utility of the world.
we wont see buffs right now , we have to wait @november. last season in dragonfight we werent that great also but not that bad as right now. while Demon hunters where the king and only got small nerfs compare to paladins in last season of dragonflight. i cant even cast combat ress this season because i’m out of holy power for to keep defensive up lol , never happend before too hehe.
Im not a prot main, and I only occasional tank, but having done a few M0s this season it definetly feels worse than it did in DF, but I cant put my finger on what. Though the entire spec feels like a bit of a bodge job these days and I wonder if prot needs an overhaul like ret got
I have been tanking with my Pally since Legion, and in DF i got all instance teleports from M+20 keys (now +10), but i think this season i wont be doing that.
The damage we take from trash is ridiculous. Even last week, doing +5’s with Tyrannical, felt like trash moobs were doing more damage then bosses.
Mists and Grim Batol feel the hardest when it comes to trash. Once, doing Mists +5, i pull a grp of 5 moobs with shield (hitting all 5), then use divine toll, and then dead. No time to use Eye of Tyr, because each moob hit me for around 2M each, all 5 at same time.
I got +90k armor, around 50% block, and i still get 2M hits from trash, sometimes +5M, even with SoR and consecration up.
Everybody seems to agree, that Prot Palas are in a bad place atm.
And dont come with that BS of our utility, because the main job of a Tank is to have good threat and survive, and our damage output is low, any good dps can steal agro from us on multiple moobs. Many times they ask me to pull more, but they dont understand, that with divine toll on cd, i cant pull more, need to wait for cd’s. The shield alone is not making enough damage to keep threat away from the best dps.
And without our cd’s we just take too much damage. Many times i die even with cd’s up. And dont forget, we dont have enough cd’s to keep them up 100% of the time.
Even if we spend 4 points in talents about WoG, it still heals like crap, 30% of what it did in DF, so we not even as good off healer as before.
The healing from Golden Path and Lightforged Blessing are a joke.
Having to spend 3 points to get max bennefits from Divine Steed is also bad design.
this is my problem.
Prot pala dose not feel like a tank. its just a dummy spec that mobs / bosses test their dmg on you.
The shear amount of wipes I got from M+ is ridiculouse.
They can bearly surevive 1 pack pull, 2’d its aready asking fore to much.
Problem is this

- Avenger’s Shield is intentionally not granting Holy Power.
make it grant power again.
That is NOT the main problem, as you CAN get holy power from avenger’s shield IF you have punishment talent in class tree and SUCCESFULLY kick a cast. The biggest problem is WoG being weak and drainning our mana while self healing. Also we cannot play sentinel because of duration nerf, which hard stinks.
also our 2 set is undertuned and Shield Of R Is doing no defensive thing that 2 set is 0%
They should buff devoution aura up to be 20% instead of 3%
also buff our Shield Of R to a 40% more dmg reduce instead of 3%
also rework 4 set to buff CD of divine shield instead.
also for templar make their slam stack up to 5 stacks making it 50% damage redtuction and buff it from 5% to 10% instead and co exsist with divine purpose.
Then remove mana cost of WOG
also buff so we get holy power from avenger shield again
