24 hours eh?
Still going to be a while till release.
My soul is gone.
We call it “mystery box” writing. Patented by JJ Abrams.
It’s bad. It’s entirely why SL lore is so awful. They never bothered to think it through.
It’s the same reason why series like Lost tanked after the second season.

You can’t help but lowly grumble at the mention of his name.
So it has a name. Now we can kill the beast.
How long ago was 9.1.5 announced now?
About two months ago.
It feels like longer…
Time flies when you’re having fun
But the inverse also applies
To be fair, we did have those moments.
They were back in November, 2019.
We wanted to find out the answers to those questions when Shadowlands came out.
Then we wanted to find out the answers to those questions when 9.1 came out.
Now we’re waiting to find out the answers to those questions when 9.2 comes out.
Right now, it’s October, 2021.
You can’t expect your audience to keep asking the same question for almost two years without growing bored.
I thought they did an okay job of building up a mystery with Bolvar in Legion. It was a semi-interesting series of breadcrumb quests that had people wondering when he’d make a move. That alongside those visions of Arthas where he said you’re still a puppet did make me wonder what we were in for.
Then he turns into the king in a cinematic and now we’re here.
Still can’t believe I got a little excited over that leaked Blizzcon image of him looking cool. They threw all of that away for the child of Squidward and Thanos and his adventures collecting the sigils (???) to go to the Sepulcher of the First Ones (??? to both the Sepulchur and the First ones)
Sounds like the Chris Carter Effect.
You can pinpoint that massive writer’s strike with how bad Lost got.
it never really hyped me because it just seemed kind of dumb to me that the 13-year-long icecubed cripple man would suddenly become this epic badass. And then what happened happened and despite my lack of expectations I was still, and am still disappointed.
I wasn’t super hyped, but I’d be lying if I didn’t go “oooh, Lich King.”
If Legion was “in case of sub loss, break Illidan out of glass” I figured BfA would give us the Lich King version of that.
Still in disbelief at the fact we went to the afterlife. I sometimes forget that the Shadowlands even is the afterlife rather than something like Norvrandt from FFXIV. None of the zones really scream afterlife aside from the Maw, which is a very milquetoast hellscape. All of these zones, aside from maybe the Maw, could easily be on the other side of Azeroth and could be sustained on a different kind of plot juice instead of anima.
Revendreth could easily be a regular vampire zone, but it still wouldn’t hold a candle to Morytania. Damn, Runescape had some cool areas.
Looking at other high fantasy settings, that isn’t the part that gets me. What gets me is the wasted potential. There was an almost entirely blank slate to work with and not even the sky as the limit to the creativity.
Considering what we ended up getting, I just feel robbed.
I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad move given that WoW’s full of high fantasy content, but I’m kind of baffled we went there so early. Feels like we struck down Azshara and N’zoth just to sweep them aside for this.
Angry reacts only at the fact Hearthstone got Old God stuff for the Darkmoon Faire before WoW did. People had been speculating about that for years.
I mean… going on twenty years. I wouldn’t say early.
I’m just hung up on the fact we tossed two big names aside like that in patches when they could have had a lot more content to them. Especially when our replacement is Squidward, who we know nothing about.
I’d be hung up on it if I thought Old Gods had cool potential but, y’know.
They don’t. Not for an MMORPG format. Azshara also was just a big ‘eh’ to me because she’s just an elf fish and there’s only so much you can do with naga until it gets stale and blizz has in fact already done that amount.
I like the Old God aesthetic, which is also done infinitely better in other games. Hell, without even having the same inspirations as WoW FFXIV does cosmic horror way better in a small dungeon.
Shadowbringers spoilers
Some ungodly noise making the people of Amaurot so scared that their creation magic starts spawning stuff from sheer terror is some cool stuff and I'm wondering if Fandanny's towers will produce something similar to mess with our Echo.I just want Azshara to turbocharge the Maelstrom. It eats away the shaman order hall (sorry not sorry) and threatens to consume all landmasses of the world.
The solution?
A massive flotilla-base teetering on the edge of the churning abyss, with adventurers having control of their own ship and customization control of its appearance. No I don’t know how that would remain interesting, but decking out a ship and its interior quarters with whatever racial/class vibe I like? Trophies to hang from the mast as grim warning to Azshara and whatever else lurks asea?
Why I’d be in wonderland.
