If they’re going to add new playable races then I’d like them to be options that have long been requested instead of brand new additions or extremely niche.
For example, Naga and Ethereals have been a part of the setting for a long time, can easily tie back into older story beats and I’d happily take them over any ‘flavour of the month’ addition that ceases to be relevant after their initial debut.
Arrakoa? You mean Dracthyr right? Winged, androgynous, quirky.
What’s an Arrakoa? Sorry we’re NUblizzard.
Huh? You want a fifth variety of dwarf? a fourth sub-race of elves? What do you mean I’m talking to a mirror?
It’s not like we have some extremely detailed races with solid background (that we for some reason even expanded in WoD) that have existed since Warcraft 2 that we’ve never bothered to implement because
[checks cards]
They’d be too tall!
[looks at the camera, then looks at the Tauren, Zandalari Trolls, aforementioned Dracthyr]
There are also a bunch that should’ve been customisation options instead of whole new playable races!
Dark Iron dwarf, part of Ironforge since Cataclysm,
Highmountain tauren,
Lightforged Draenei, we even play Lightforged Exodar draenei if you make one!,
Mag’har orc, no matter if they’re Outlands or Draenor one,
Mechagnomes, they’re just gnomes with robotic parts, 100% should’ve been customisation options!
And yeah, Ogres should’ve been a Allied Race for sure!
Unique racial mounts - ‘Running Wild’ equivelant as a ground mount, Coatl’s from WC3 as air mounts.
Devs need to stop being cowards, end of. ARs have been, for the most part, terribly done and customisation is STILL behind other games that came out in 2004 as well. So tired.
My biggest gripe will forever being that we got new dragonkin races (Dracthyr) vs actually giving us Drakonids that have been established since the days of Warcraft (iirc).
We really were robbed of Dragonsworn being canonized and them being turned into drakonids/dragonspawn instead of having yet another lizard reskin of the male worgen rig as some boring progenitor race.
The aesthetic they went with really didn’t help as well upon initial release. Moreover, you get an OK visage form instead of being given a chance to go any playable race on either faction or even outside of it. But that’s the blizzard way, take the lazy path or procrastinate on it until a decade later when you have another scandal on your hands.
Pandaren ability to stay neutral is one thing that makes them interesting on par with dracthyr. Especially with how both factions and those in between almost trampled Pandaria back and forth. Jinyu and hozen, yes, they would make awesome allied races for their respective factions, but mogu and factions would just go against the very idea.
As far as I know, this is still kind of the case as of Dragonflight (and just another avenue on how they exist other than being Ordered Tarasek).
Of course Dragonsworn were decanonised a long time ago though - though there’s evidence of mortals hanging with dragons so it’s whatever.
“In the millennia that followed, new methods with varying degrees of success were devised to create drakonid.” - Art of Dragonflight
July 10, 2014 – “@Loreology Dragonmen = Drakonids? To create dragonmen without Nefarian’s influence possible?” “Metzen has ruled that they are separate races from the dragon race. They became dragonspawn and drakonid thanks to the dragons they served (via intentional alteration or via “unintended side effect of hanging out with dragons”).”
I like to think if there’s reference to their creation being other methods in Dragonflight stuff that it’s still a possibility the old Chris Metzen/Loreology tweet is real. Mortal born Drakonids still possible!
I like the visage form, but I wish there was more option between blood elf male and human female for the visage options. Especially with how dragon visages can be ANYTHING.
