PTR Spoiler/Discussion Thread (Part 3)

Ignoring the Jailer for a moment, prior to his existance and maybe even spite of it because they dabbed hard on Bastion, Sargeras was still viewed as small-fry compared to the Void Lord’s. his whole purpose of his burning crusade was scouring the universe so they couldnt gain a foothold to enter this plane. 'course that was once upon a time so god knows if its still/was still the case.

To be entirely fair, I doubt the SL team would have devised the nerubians. They are very much a “lesser” threat when compared to previous tier 1 antagonists (an old god in BFA, god of death in SL, a primal incarnate) and on top of that seem much more lore-friendly and grounded in the old world when compared to Danuser’s cosmicverse shenanigans.

This may be the writers (finally) realizing that their previous approach was not working, but either way, War Within marks a shift from their previous narrative choices.

He wasn’t however. The Void Lords were not announced as a thing until Chronicles, which is something between late WoD and Legion, which is quite late for WoW’s development.

Lore characters believed he was weaker than all of the Old Gods together, but that’s hardly a fair comparison seeing how it was a 3v1.

Also a chronicle thing.

While this is true for Shadowlands, the earthen, kobolds and nerubians do fit Dragonflight’s approach to NPC races, which is to take baseline WoW races and dramatically expand on their cultures, or completely reinvent them in some cases.

Plus, nerubian culture gives me the impression that they might have been worked on by the same person responsible for the Niffen, what with their incessant focus on “mm yes let me spray you with my pheromones my stinky two-legged surface dweller.”

do you think the same dev is obsessed with feet or is that someone different

My theory is that the stinky boy is probably a high-ranking quest designer who gets to have a say about how a lot of campaign quests are written, whereas the feet sniffer is likely someone high-ranking in the visual department, who not only gets to have a say regarding Xal’atath’s design but gets to direct in-game cinematics.

In order for the stinky boy and the feet sniffer to be the same person, they’d have to be very high up in the company to have influence over those two different aspects of the game. So I think it’s more likely that there’s two different fetishists forcing their kinks into the game.

Do you think they’re friends with the poop quest maker?

I do think this is true (especially when one thinks the dragon isles are just that, a reinvention of an old concept), but they still sound much more true to the older lore than, say, the Dragon Isles, whose approach was to reframe and reinvent everything.

I definitely don’t have the final proof, and interestingly enough I do recall that when Shadowlands came out Danuser mentioned how he might one day explore the connection between nerubians and maldraxxus, seeing how the latter had inspired nerubian architecture, which then inspired the Scourge.

So there is a precedence, but I find it very thin evidence at best considering the context, which felt like one of Danuser’s usual replies along the lines of “nah that was the old lore, yeah yeah whatever makes it fit for my new vision” but if he was running out of ideas he might have decided to play this card himself, potentially.

Ehh, aungh. I remember reading an old criticism of yours about it and it’s one of those things that when you see it, it becomes hard to unsee afterwards. I still want to think it’s just being quirky for quirky’s sake.

It’s true that the nerubians don’t fit the pattern established by previous antagonists by the BfA/SL/DF writers, but they were still almost certainly written into TWW before Metzen came along. The zone themes were likely already locked in by the time he joined, and the TWW nerubians (and earthen) fit the DF pattern of “here’s a different, isolated population of a previously established race, with no apparent connection, which goes completely unexplained”.

Dragonflight gave us different centaurs and tuskarr that we never heard of before. TWW gave us different earthen, nerubians, and Arathi that we never heard of before.

While true, they did at least link Azj-Kahet to the wider Nerubian (pardon the pun) web, and why they’re here like they are, as opposed to Azjol-Nerub which got Scourged.

Which we absolutely didn’t get with the Centaur in DF. And while I like the Centaur there, I still wish we had a bit more depth too :frowning:

Wait, I vaguely recall the DF centaur bieng Kalimdor centaur that split off from the Kalimdor ones following Ohn’ahran and sailing to the Dragon Isles??

That is impossible since the Kalimdor centaur didn’t exist before the dragon isles sealed themselves off.

Uhh, I lowkey disagree. At least, I don’t think the same fetishist worked on it, as I did really appreciate their approach to expanding on Nerubian culture, with how they don’t see very well and rely on pheromones etc. I much prefer Nerubians to Niffen and thank god the Niffen were not featured as heavily as Nerubians were.

Still my holding theory on dracthyr.

I don’t think nerubians or Niffen have anything to do with a fetish and it is in fact you people with gutter minds.

The fact they had to add a toy to remove the sniffing sound of the Niffen…

I think that says enough about it :weary:

I just wish they’d stop adding ‘brand new races’ in areas where there’s already cool races that could use some more fleshing out.

The ‘Brokers’ in SL were just Ethereals from Wish. Having Drogbar underground instead of the Mascot Attempt Of The Month would have been… if not perfect then at least better.

Don’t make it a fetish, just some people dislike the noise.
Same thing can be said for worgen sniffing and sabers yawning.

They were fortunately there too.

Same, most new races aren’t even needed since we usually already have races that fill that type of niches, for example, the Niffen were added in Zarelek Caverns, when Dark Trolls would’ve made more sense since they also live underground and could’ve worked as the mortal essence which were used to create Dracthyr, which would make their addition to the Caverns more logical!

But then again Dark Trolls could also easily replace the Harranir atm so, ehh

Except they’re supposedly nearly extinct.

Except they’re 100% evolved dark trolls.
