Yeah, like realistically both in-universe and without for the narrative the furthest the Amani’s reconquista could reach is some sort of symbolic reparation, and Blizzard’s fond of solving background conflicts that exist for texture
just don’t straighten out the right-and-wrong and the origins of that first spin of the cycle of hatred
To elaborate slightly on the Elf vs Amani situation: There is a very genuine argument that the Elves have now held the land for almost 1-2 thousand years longer than the Amani ever did. They came as refugees and through unfortunate circumstance that we still don’t really know, eventually they took the Amani Templeland and plopped Silvermoon on top of it - importantly we still know literally 0x details from either side regarding the how or why of this.
This doesn’t mean the Elves have some sort of nativistic right to the land however, it just means that they have as equal a claim as the Trolls who also originally conquered the land and settled upon it. It’s a very baby leftist mistake to make, imho, to look at the Trolls using elements of ethnic-minority religion and culture and reflect that 1:1 onto them being that ethnic minority, with all the IRL baggage that comes with. They cannot possibly reflect all the intricacy and politics of ethnic minority oppression and suppression - there are elements of that storytelling in the Troll narrative but they are not a stand-in.
Let’s consider that the high elves began as the bitter deposed ruling class of night elven society, who were grumpy that they were no longer free to sling around the destructive and demon-luring arcane and ravaged Ashenvale with a terrible magical storm as an act of protest. When the druids decided to grant them mercy by exiling them instead of killing them all, as was the law at the time, said highborne buggered off to build their own superior society, with blackjack and hookers and freedom to sling about as many spells as they wanted.
So, I’d view the early high elves less as refugees, more as a gaggle of Andrew Ryans looking to build their own Rapture.
romans and italians were two different tribes of people living on the italian landmass, among other tribes such as etruscans, rhaetians, veneti etc
the modern take on “Roman” is an oversimplified hodgepodge of all these ethnicities blended into an average Italian person where in reality they might just as likely trace their lineage to greek or even gallic roots
While they were two tribes, Roman conquest of Italians and many other peoples resulted in those peoples (especially starting from 3rd century) adopting Roman identity. At the end of the day, one´s ancestry doesn´t matter, what matters is the identity they took on as a society during their continued development.
There are Romans in Rome, there are Romans in modern Romania, there are Romans in Istanbul and there would have been Romans in Greece (which could have ended being called Romania too*) if they didn´t realize that returning to the name they used 2000 years ago was just absurdly convenient.
(*) Unfortunately it didn´t happen and we missed out on having two countries with the same name in Europe again. There could have been another chance with two Slovenias but some Czechs and Poles in Middle Ages messed things up when they started calling northern Slovenians “Slovaks” and it gave everyone a convenient out.
At least this one aspect of real life WoW got correctly: Sometimes peoples just end up with the same name even though they´re two separate things.
What makes it more absurd in WoW is that, as you say, in our world the name and ethnicity is spread out over a huge area and has several meanings and interpretations because of the generations and ages gone since it was relevant as a global power
In WoW, your literal neigbour could have been alive at that time but still refuses to clear it up.
I blame the younger races (a.k.a. American writers who don´t understand how languages interact and influence how we think, because they probably only speak one).
“Nuh-uh, you´re not Highborne, you´re high elf.”
QUEL´DOREI MEANS QUEL´DOREI!
Why were they? I admit I would have to read up on my early history of the US, but I seem to recall most settlers went there either for a better life or due to persecution in Europe ( when talking about the European settlers atleast).
Random drops or meticulous grind should not be the way to gain what should be around from the start, like racial mounts that don’t look like they belong to Minecraft. If every wolf, horse, nightsaber and such was upgraded to this graphics level, we’d be living in a far better world.
I mean I do agree with you, but Blizzard apparently thinks players are attached to their stupidly outdated and ugly looking racial mounts(except Tauren players, apparently).
On the otherside of the coin, those random drops from the darkshore (Nightsaber) mounts are around 75%* or whatever. And I think its fair for some rewards to take even the slightest hint of an “effort”.
(*) I made that number up to have it look more interesting
Eitherway personally I don’t see a problem with RNG, yea it can suck and I am still farming Invincible(its the closest thing that could pass for a Undeath Hippogryph), but thats how it is.
